a. Weekly Bible Verse Readings Review:

During the last week, while at home, you will have read the Bible verses and written down what you learnt about God. Lets discuss your answers

We did not ask you to draw a picture of God but we wanted you to paint a word-picture of what you think God is like. We asked you to make it personal and intimate, you do not have to share this in class unless you are led to do so. Does anyone want to do that

(Give time for discussion)

Attributes of God

GOD IS LOVE:

Love is an attribute of God, but not a definition of God. God defines love. Love does not define God. It expresses the way God is, just as His other qualities do.

DOWNLOAD Visual Aid colouring Poster

Faithfulness, goodness, mercy, justice, and holiness all express the essence of God. He is always all of these different qualities at the same time. God’s love is always holy. It is always good, faithful, merciful, and just.

We do not know how to define love, but we know how love is revealed. Love desires the good of all and never wants harm or evil to come to anyone. Love gives all things freely and sacrificially to the one who is loved. God loves each of us as individuals.

This giving, self-sacrificing, unchangeable love, which God has for those who worship Him, is not found in any religion of the world. Love is what makes Christianity different, because God’s love desires our good. God, whose very essence is love, is among His people, loving them, enjoying them, and lavishing them with blessings.

Read 1 John 4:7-16. . . . .

7  Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8  Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9  This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10  This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11  Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12  No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

13  This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14  And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15  If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16  And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

There is much more to learn about God’s love. It is so vast and immeasurable that we will never completely understand it.

Read Ephesians 2:4-5. . .

4  But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5  made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved.

GOD IS FAITHFUL:

We can depend upon God because He is faithful. He keeps His promises. We can live with hope for the future because God’s faithfulness never fails.

To find out what the Old Testament says about the faithfulness of God

Read Deuteronomy 7:9

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.

GOD IS UNCHANGING

God does not change.
“I the LORD do not change.”

Malachi 3: 6a

GOD IS GOOD

Divine goodness is different than human goodness because God is perfectly good in every area at all times

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; His love endures forever.” Psalm 107: 1

GOD IS JUST

When God acts justly, He is not doing it to conform to what man has set as a just action. He is simply acting like Himself. God is always, only, fully God and can never do anything other than He is. He is just.

“He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just.
A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.” Deuteronomy 32: 4

GOD IS MERCIFUL

Mercy is an attribute of God. He is full of compassion and always merciful as well as just. Even in executing justice, He is merciful. He is always dealing with humankind with infinite and inexhaustible mercy. Divine mercy is not a temporary mood with God, but an attribute of God’s eternal being. God was merciful before time began and His mercy will extend through all eternity.

Oh, give thanks to the Lord , for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.

GOD IS HOLY

Divine holiness stands apart. It is unique, beyond our understanding. God is pure, with absolute moral perfection.

1. a. What does God expect of Christians?

Read 1 Peter 1: 13 – 16

13  Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14  As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15  But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16  for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."
__________________________________________________________
b. How can we become holy?
1 Corinthians 1: 30

It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God-that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
__________________________________________________________

This is what the Lord says:
“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom
Or the strong boast of their strength
Or the rich boast of their riches,
But let the one who boasts boast about this:
That they have the understanding to know me,
That I am the Lord, who exercises kindness,
Justice and righteousness on earth,
For in these I delight,”

Declares the Lord.”

Jeremiah 9:23-24

6. APPLICATION/ENCOUNTERING GOD:
