c. Teach the lesson

Again, why do we need a Savior? . . . . . (because we have sinned against God)

We have disobeyed God. We have opposed Him and been indifferent to Him. Those things are sin. That is why we need a Savior—to save us from the penalty of sin.

Jesus Is Our Substitute

Throughout the Old Testament, God was revealing that an innocent,
sinless substitute could die for the sin of another.

But we have just read Romans 3:23, which says:

'All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God'

DOWNLOAD Bible Verse Visual Aid

DOWNLOAD Jumble Verse Visual Aid

So there never has been a sinless person, except Jesus Christ.That is the reason He came to earth.

He came to be our innocent Substitute. There was no other way we could be forgiven!

Jesus had to be virgin-born, so that He did not have Adam’s sinful nature—which all other human beings have inherited.

He lived a sinless life as a baby, a child, a teenager, and an adult.

We can learn what the Bible says about Christ’s sinless nature as we read 2 Corinthians 5:21

“Christ was without sin. . . .

When Jesus was 30 years old, He began His earthly ministry. At that time, He was baptized and God spoke from heaven saying He approved of Jesus’ life and everything that He had done.

Read about this event in Matthew 3:17. . . . .

This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

(Matthew 3: 17)

1. Jesus clearly foretold that He would be put to death and rise to life. Whom did He tell, and what did He tell them in the following references?

a. Luke 18:31-33 . . . . .

31  Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished. 32  For He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. 33  They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again."

(Jesus told His disciples that He would be turned over to the Gentiles. He gave them details about how He would be treated before they killed Him.)

b. Matthew 12:38-40 . . . . .

38  Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from You."

39  But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40  For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

(He told His enemies, the teachers of the law and the Pharisees, that He would be buried three days and three nights.)

c. Mark 8:31-32a . . . . .

31  And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32  He spoke this word openly.

(He told the disciples He would be put to death and three days later He would rise to life.)

Did you notice that verse 32 said Jesus made this very clear to them? However, the more the people followed Jesus, the more the religious teachers of the law and Pharisees rejected and abused Him. Finally, the time came when God had planned that Jesus should be betrayed and He was arrested. But let’s read if His enemies could condemn Jesus.

2. Could the enemies of Jesus find Him guilty of sin?

Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. (Print Jesus taken to High Priest visual aid ).

Read Luke 23:4 . . . .

4  So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no fault in this Man."

(no)

3. Since Jesus had not sinned or broken any law, why was He condemned to die?

Read Mark 14:60-64 . . . . .

60  And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, "Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?" 61  But He kept silent and answered nothing.

Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"

62  Jesus said, "I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven."

63  Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "What further need do we have of witnesses? 64  You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?" And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.

(He was condemned to death because He said He was the Messiah, the Son of God.)

Of course, that was the truth. Jesus is the Messiah. He is the Son of God. The rulers said the truth was a lie and they condemned the One who was their Creator.

Jesus did not defend Himself. He had come to earth to die for the sins of others.

Pilate sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.  (Print Herod visual aid ) When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.

His betrayal, the illegal trials, scourging, and actual crucifixion were no surprise to Him. All these things had been prophesied many years earlier.

Jesus knew all this would happen. Before the creation of the world, He had planned to come to earth to die as man’s Substitute. This was the only way for men to be saved from the consequences of sin. Jesus knew the extreme suffering He would have to endure

4. The account of the arrest, death, and burial of Jesus, is reported in all four of the Gospels. Each writer emphasized different things from a different perspective. In the other accounts, we learn that there were several trials because they had difficulty accusing Jesus of wrongdoing. We also learn some of the things Jesus said from the cross.

It was a heavy hard journey He took for us. (Print Jesus falls with cross visual aid ). And He needed help to carry it.

Jesus took our sin on Himself. In fact, He took the punishment for all the sin of all people of all time.

Read 2 Corinthians 5:21 . . . . .

21  For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Satan, the devil, is a defeated foe because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Read what is revealed in 1 John 3:8-10 . . . . .

8  He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9  Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.

10  In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.

You may ask, “If Satan is defeated, how does he have so much success today?” He succeeds for three reasons:

1) People choose to obey Satan rather than obey God.

2) Christians do not realize Satan is a defeated foe. God has given them power to live victoriously.

We read this in Ephesians 1:19-22 . . . . .

19 What is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20  which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21  far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.

22  And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church,

3) The devil’s defeat was revealed when Christ rose from the grave. However, Satan is free to work until Jesus returns again. The devil will receive his punishment later.

Jesus came the first time to provide our salvation. He is coming the next time to execute judgment.

5. The Bible plainly teaches that Jesus came to earth to die in your place for your sins. Since Jesus died for you, what will your response to Him be? . . . . .

(You may have each person give an answer to this question.

6. Memorize Acts 4:12

"Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

The Bible verses below speak of the "suffering servant," who suffers because of the sins of others. Write in your own words how He suffered for you.

1. Psalm 22 : 1;7-8

1 My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Why are You so far from helping Me,
And from the words of My groaning?

7 All those who see Me ridicule Me;
They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 "He trusted in the  Lord , let Him rescue Him;
Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!"

...........................

2. Psalm 22 : 13-15

13 They gape at Me with their mouths,
Like a raging and roaring lion.

14 I am poured out like water,
And all My bones are out of joint;
My heart is like wax;
It has melted within Me.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And My tongue clings to My jaws;
You have brought Me to the dust of death.

.........................

3. Psalm 22 : 16-17

16 For dogs have surrounded Me;
The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me.
They pierced My hands and My feet;
17 I can count all My bones.
They look and stare at Me.

..........................

4. Psalm 22 : 18-19

18 They divide My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.

19 But You, O  Lord , do not be far from Me;
O My Strength, hasten to help Me!

...........................

5. Isaiah 53 :3- 5

3 He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.4 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.

..........................

6. Isaiah 53 :6-7
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the  Lord  has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.

........................

7. Isaiah 53 :9-10a
9 And they made His grave with the wicked-
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the  Lord  to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
