Session 6 The Seals of Judgment and God’s Protection
(Rev 6 -7)
I. INTRODUCTION TO THE SEVEN SEALS (REV. 5)
A. Jesus took the scroll sealed with seven seals from the
hand of the Father
7 He [Jesus] came and took the scroll out of the right hand of
Him [Father]…9
and they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take
the scroll, and to open its seals…” (Rev. 5:7,
9)
B. 8 When He [Jesus] had taken the scroll…the
twenty-four elders fell down…each having a harp, and golden
bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. (Rev.
5:8)
D. 19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the
earth and their armies gathered together to wage war against the
rider on the horse and his army. (Rev. 19:19)
6 ”…I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry
land; 7 and I will shake all nations, and they [unbelievers]
shall come to the Desire of All Nations [Jesus]…”
says the LORD.
(Hag 2:6–7)
F. The seven seals are released
5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the
Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He
is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” (Rev.
5:5)
1 I saw when the Lamb [Jesus] opened one of the seals;
and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice
like thunder, “Come and see.” (Rev. 6:1)
3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living
creature say, “Come!”
5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living
creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me
was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his
hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living
creatures, saying, “Two pounds of wheat for a day’s
wages, and six pounds of barley for a day’s wages, and do
not damage the oil and the wine!”
7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the
fourth living creature say, “Come!”
9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls
of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony
they had maintained.
12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake.
The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole
moon turned blood red. (Rev. 6:3, 5, 7, 9, 12)
When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for
about half an hour. (Rev. 8:1)
G. Come and see:
17Your eyes will see the King in His beauty…18Your heart
will meditate on terror: “Where is the scribe? Where is he
who weighs? Where is he who counts the towers?” (Isa.
33:17-18)
H. Principle of judgment:
16 The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute.
They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her
flesh and burn her with fire. (Rev. 17:16)
II. FIRST SEAL: ANTICHRIST’S POLITICAL AGGRESSION
A. The opening of the first seal speaks of the Antichrist’s
political aggression
1 I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one
of the four living creatures saying…, “Come and see.”
2 I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow;
and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to
conquer. (Rev. 6:1–2)
B. White:
11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse,
whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges
and wages war. (Rev. 19:11)
C. Crown:
The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming
out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns
on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. 2 The beast I
saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a
mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and
his throne and great authority.
7 It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people
and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe,
people, language and nation. (Rev. 13:1-2, 7)
1. The Antichrist will receive authority, or permission,
to act from God.
7 And authority was given him [Antichrist] over every…nation.
(Rev. 13:7)
Jesus possesses all authority
18All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (Mt.
28:18)
1 There is no authority except from God…the authorities that
exist are appointed by
God…4 He is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath
on him who practices evil.
(Rom. 13:1, 4)
2. Satan and sinful leaders will also give their authority
to the Antichrist .
2…The dragon [Satan] gave him his power, his throne,
and great authority. (Rev 13:2)
E. Through the Antichrist, God will judge the harlot Babylon
for murdering the saints
6 I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s
holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus.
16 The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute.
They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her
flesh and burn her with fire. (Rev. 17:6, 16)
III. SECOND SEAL: WORLD WAR (6:3-4)
A. The opening of the second seal
3 When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature
saying, “Come and see.” 4 Another horse, fiery red,
went out. It was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace
from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there
was given to him a great sword. (Rev. 6:3–4)
B. Great sword:
2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held
a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror
bent on conquest. (Rev. 6:2)
C. Take peace from the earth:
3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden
destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman.
And they shall not escape. (1 Thes. 5:3)
God will take peace from the nations made drunk by the
great Harlot
6 I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s
holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus.
16 The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute.
They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her
flesh and burn her with fire. (Rev. 17:6, 16)
D. The Antichrist will make a peace treaty
27He [Antichrist] shall confirm a covenant [peace treaty] with
many for one week [seven years]; But in the middle of the
week [seven years] He shall bring an end to sacrifice and
offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes
desolate…” (Dan. 9:27)
IV. THIRD SEAL: FAMINE AND ECONOMIC CRISIS (6:5-6)
A. The opening of the third seal speaks of releasing famine
and economic crisis
5 When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature
say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black
horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. 6
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying,
“A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley
for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.” (Rev.
6:5-6)
Famine and economic collapse will follow the world war
seen in the second seal
4 Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given
power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each
other. To him was given a large sword. (Rev. 6:4)
V. FOURTH SEAL: DEATH TO ONE-FOURTH OF THE EARTH’S
PEOPLE (6:7-8)
A. The opening of the fourth seal
7 When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth
living creature saying, “Come and see.” 8 So I looked,
and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was
Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them
over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with
death, and by the beasts of the earth. (Rev. 6:7-8)
D. A fourth:
17 I will send famine and wild beasts against you, and they will
leave you childless. Plague and bloodshed will sweep through you,
and I will bring the sword against you. I the LORD have spoken.”
(Ezek. 5:17)
21”How much more it shall be when I send My four severe judgments
on Jerusalem—the sword and famine and wild beasts and pestilence—to
cut off man and beast from it? (Ezek. 14:21)
VI. FIFTH SEAL: PRAYER RELEASING JUDGMENT
A. The opening of the fifth seal
9 When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar [altar
of incense in heaven] the souls of those who had been slain
for the word of God…10And they cried with a loud voice, saying,
“How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge
our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11Then a white
robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them that they
should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their
fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed [martyred]
as they were, was completed. (Rev. 6:9–11)
B. The fifth, sixth and seventh seals
2 Righteous are His judgments…He avenged on her the blood
of His servants… (Rev. 19:2)
D. How long?:
12 Then the angel of the LORD said, “LORD Almighty, how long
will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and from the towns of Judah,
which you have been angry with these seventy years?” (Zech.
1:12)
3 My soul is in deep anguish.
How long, LORD, how long? (Ps. 6:3)
2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me? (Ps. 13:2)
10 How long will the enemy mock you, God?
Will the foe revile your name forever? (Ps. 74:10)
5 How long, LORD? Will you be angry forever?
How long will your jealousy burn like fire? (Ps. 79:5)
4 How long, LORD God Almighty, will your anger smolder against
the prayers of your people? (Ps. 80:4)
46 How long, LORD? Will you hide yourself forever?
How long will your wrath burn like fire? (Ps. 89:46)
13 Relent, LORD! How long will it be?
Have compassion on your servants. (Ps. 90:13)
3 How long, LORD, will the wicked,
how long will the wicked be jubilant? (Ps. 94:3)
13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said
to him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled—the
vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes
desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot
of the LORD’s people?” (Dan. 8:13)
6 One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the
waters of the river, “How long will it be before these astonishing
things are fulfilled?”
7 The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river,
lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard
him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “It will be for
a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people
has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.”
8 I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord,
what will the outcome of all this be?”
9 He replied, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are
rolled up and sealed until the time of the end. 10 Many will be
purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue
to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who
are wise will understand.
11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and
the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be
1,290 days. 12 Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the
end of the 1,335 days.
13 “As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest,
and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted
inheritance.” (Dan. 12:6-13)
7 ”…will not God bring about justice for His elect
who cry to Him day and night…8 He will bring about justice
for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find
faith on the earth?” (Lk. 18:7-8)
VII. THE SIXTH SEAL: COSMIC DISTURBANCES (6:12-17)
A. The opening of the sixth seal
12He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake;
and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became
like blood.
13And the stars of heaven fell to the earth…14Then the sky
receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and
island was moved out of its place. 15And the kings of the earth,
the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every
slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the
rocks of the mountains, 16and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall
on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and
from the wrath of the Lamb! 17For the great day of His wrath has
come, and who is able to stand?” (Rev. 6:12–17)
B. Great earthquake:
6 “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘In a little
while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea
and the dry land. (Hag. 2:6)
26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised,
“Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”
27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what
can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot
be shaken may remain.
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken,
let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence
and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.” (Heb.
12:26-28)
Mountains continue to exist in the seventh bowl
20 Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.
(Rev.16:20)
VIII. FIRST ANGELIC EXPLANATION: WHO CAN STAND? (7:1-17)
B. Angelic explanation #1: Who can stand?
1After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the
earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind
from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree. 2 Then I
saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal of the
living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who
had been given power to harm the land and the sea: 3 “Do not
harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the
foreheads of the servants of our God.” 4 Then I heard the
number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of
Israel. (Rev. 7:1-4)
Gentile martyrs shall stand strong without wavering in
persecution.
9 After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude
that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language,
standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing
white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And
they cried out in a loud voice:
“Salvation belongs to our God,
who sits on the throne,
and to the Lamb.”
11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the
elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces
before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying:
“Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!”
13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who
are they, and where did they come from?”
14 I answered, “Sir, you know.”
And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great
tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in
the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore,
“they are before the throne of God
and serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne
will shelter them with his presence.
16 ‘Never again will they hunger;
never again will they thirst.
The sun will not beat down on them,’
nor any scorching heat.
17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne
will be their shepherd;
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’
‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. (Rev.
7:9-17)
C. John sees a divine sealing on His people that gives
them physical and spiritual protection.
1 I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth,
holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow
on the earth…2 I saw another angel ascending from the east,
having the seal of the living God. And he cried with a loud voice
to the four angels… 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth,
the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God
on their foreheads.” 4 And I heard the number of those who
were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes
of the children of Israel were sealed… (Rev. 7:1-4)
D.Israel received a protective mark on their doors that
saved their firstborn.
4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant
or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God
on their foreheads (Rev. 9:4)
The Goshen principle speaks of God protecting His people
from judgment the Psalm 91 principle.
22 “‘But on that day I will deal differently with the
land of Goshen, where my people live; no swarms of flies will be
there, so that you will know that I, the LORD, am in this land.
23 I will make a distinction between my people and your people.
This sign will occur tomorrow.’” (Ex. 8:22-23)
4 But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of
Israel and that of Egypt, so that no animal belonging to the Israelites
will die.’”
5 The LORD set a time and said, “Tomorrow the LORD will do
this in the land.” 6 And the next day the LORD did it: All
the livestock of the Egyptians died, but not one animal belonging
to the Israelites died.
26 The only place it did not hail was the land of Goshen, where
the Israelites were.
(Ex. 9:4-6, 26)
6 Slaughter the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and
children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my
sanctuary.” (Ezek. 9:6)
3 Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land,
you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness, seek humility;
perhaps you will be sheltered
on the day of the LORD’s anger. (Zeph. 2:3)
E. Gentile believers
9 Behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations,
tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne…10saying,
“Salvation belongs to our God…” 13Then one of
the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed
in white robes, and where did they come from?” 14…he
said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great
tribulation, and washed their robes…in the blood of the Lamb.”
(Rev. 7:9-14)
