Session #11 - The Fall of Babylon - Bible Verse Hand Book
Session 11 The Fall of Babylon (Rev. 17-18)
I. JOHN’S PROPHECY ABOUT THE FALL OF BABYLON (REV.
17-18)
C. The seventh bowl will involve the most severe earthquake
in history, followed by 100-pound hailstones that will destroy many
cites of the earth
17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out
of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It
is done!” 18 Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings,
peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it
has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous
was the quake. 19 The great city split into three parts, and the
cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered Babylon the Great
and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath.
20 Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.
21 From the sky huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds,
fell on people. And they cursed God on account of the plague of
hail, because the plague was so terrible. (Rev. 16:17-21)
The Antichrist’s worshipers will not repent, but
will stubbornly blaspheme God
9 They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name
of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to
repent and glorify him. (Rev. 16:9, 11, 21)
18...there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake
as had not occurred since men were on the earth…19And great
Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine
of the fierceness of His wrath…21And great hail from heaven
fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent [100
pounds]. Men blasphemed God… (Rev. 16:18-21)
D. 8I will give You [Jesus] the nations
for Your inheritance…9You shall break them with a rod of iron;
You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel. (Ps.
2:8-9)
E. 6 I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood
of God’s holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony
to Jesus. When I saw her, I was greatly astonished. (Rev.
17:6)
II. THE END-TIME FALLING AWAY FROM THE FAITH
A. 3Let no one deceive you by any means; for that
Day [Jesus’ second coming] will not come unless the
falling away comes first, and the man of sin [Antichrist] is revealed…9The
coming of the lawless one [Antichrist] is according to
the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,
10and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because
they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
(2 Thes. 2:3, 9-10)
B There will be an end-time falling away
9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put
to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10
At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray
and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and
deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the
love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the
end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached
in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end
will come. (Mt. 24:9-13)
3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will
not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is
revealed, the man doomed to destruction. (2 Thes. 2:3)
1Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart
from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of
demons, 2speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience
seared with a hot iron, 3forbidding to marry… (1 Tim.
4:1-3)
1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful,
proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal,
not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of
pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness
but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control
over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed
by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to
come to a knowledge of the truth. (2 Tim. 3:1-7)
3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound
doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around
them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want
to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn
aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure
hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties
of your ministry. (2 Tim. 4:3-5)
1But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there
will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive
heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing
swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved
conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their
greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their
condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction
has not been sleeping. (2 Pet. 2:1-3)
III. TWO STAGES IN SATAN’S END-TIME PLAN
A. There are two stages in Satan’s end-time plan
to be worshipped by all nations.
They worshiped the Dragon [Satan]…
8All who dwell on the earth will worship him [Antichrist],
whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb
slain from the foundation of the world. (Rev. 13:8)
B. People will break away from their religious
heritage by renouncing their former beliefs.
14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
(2 Cor. 11:14)
C. The voluntary harlot Babylon religion will be replaced
by a mandatory Antichrist religion.
First, people voluntarily join the harlot Babylon one-world
religion of tolerance (Rev. 17)
Second, they will be forced to be Satan worshippers in
the Antichrist religion
4 People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to
the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who
is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?”
15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image
of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all
who refused to worship the image to be killed. (Rev. 13:4,
15)
D. The fall of Babylon has two stages.
The first phase of the fall of Babylon
16 The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute.
They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her
flesh and burn her with fire. (Rev. 17:16)
The second phase of her fall will be at the end of the
Great Tribulation.
8 Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning
and famine.
She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges
her. (Rev. 18:8)
IV. THE GREAT HARLOT: HER SEDUCTIONS AND PERSECUTIONS (REV.
17:1-6)
A. 1Come, I will show you the judgment of the
great harlot who sits on many waters, 2with whom the kings of the
earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were
made drunk with the wine of her fornication…3I saw a woman
sitting on a scarlet Beast [Antichrist]…4The woman was arrayed
in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold…having in her
hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her
fornication. 5On her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON
THE GREAT, the mother of Harlots and of the abominations of the
earth. 6I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints…
15He said, “The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits,
are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues.” (Rev.
17:1-6, 15)
B. Sits on many waters: The harlot will sit on many nations
1One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said
to me, “Come, I will show you the punishment of the great
prostitute, who sits by many waters.
15 Then the angel said to me, “The waters you saw, where
the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.
(Rev. 17:1, 15)
C. The kings:
2…with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication,
and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of
her fornication… (Rev. 17:2)
E. Sitting on the Beast:
3I saw a woman sitting on a Beast [Antichrist] which was full of
names of blasphemy…7I will tell you the mystery of the woman
and of the Beast that carries her… (Rev. 17:3, 7)
F. Arrayed in purple:
4The woman was arrayed in purple [royalty] and scarlet, and adorned
with gold…having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations
and the filthiness of her fornication. (Rev. 17:4)
H. A golden cup:
3…when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden
destruction comes upon them… (1 Thes. 5:3)
J. The harlot will deceive the nations by sorcery
23For by your [Babylon’s] sorcery all the nations
were deceived. (Rev. 18:23)
23In the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors have
reached their fullness, a king [Antichrist] shall arise…who
understands sinister schemes. (Dan. 8:23)
L. 9They will deliver you up to tribulation and
kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s
sake. 10Then many will be offended, will betray one another, and
will hate one another.11Then many false prophets will rise up and
deceive many. (Mt. 24:9-11)
M. 7 “After that, in my vision at night
I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast—terrifying
and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed
and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left.
It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.
20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about
the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the
horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes
and a mouth that spoke boastfully.
24 The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom.
After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones;
he will subdue three kings. (Dan. 7:7, 20, 24)
12The ten horns which you saw are ten kings…16The ten horns…on
the Beast [Antichrist] will hate the harlot, make her desolate…and
burn her with fire. (Rev. 17:12, 16)
N. 4 People worshiped the dragon because he had
given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast
and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against
it?”
5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies
and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened
its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling
place and those who live in heaven. 7 It was given power to wage
war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it
was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.
8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all
whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life,
the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.
9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.
10 “If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they
will go.
If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword they will
be killed.”
This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of
God’s people.
11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two
horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercised all
the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth
and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had
been healed. 13 And it performed great signs, even causing fire
to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people.
14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf
of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It
ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded
by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast was given power
to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image
could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be
killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and
poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or
on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless
they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number
of its name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate
the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number
is 666. (Rev. 13:4-18)
V. THE HARLOT’S ORIGIN: THE TOWER OF BABEL
A. 5And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY,
BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS
OF THE EARTH 6I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints
and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. (Rev. 17:5-6)
VI. THE TOWER OF BABEL
A. 4They said, “Come, let us build ourselves
a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name
for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the
whole earth.” (Gen. 11:4)
B. 6The LORD said, “Indeed the people are
one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin
to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from
them.” (Gen. 11:6)
C. 9Therefore its name is called Babel, because
there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from
there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
(Gen. 11:9)
D. 12He [Jacob] dreamed, and behold, a ladder
was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there
the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. (Gen.
28:12)
51And He [Jesus] said to him, “Most assuredly, I
say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels
of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
(Jn. 1:51)
F. 7And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his
angels fought with the dragon…8but they did not prevail, nor
was a place found for them in heaven any longer. 9So the great dragon
[Satan] was cast out…he was cast to the earth, and his angels
[demons] were cast out with him. (Rev 12:7-9)
G. The time before Jesus’ second coming
is compared to the days of Noah in Genesis 6.
37But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son
of Man be. (Mt. 24:37)
H.5The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was
great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his
heart was only evil continually… 11The earth was filled with
violence. 12So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt;
for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13God said to
Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth
is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy
them with the earth.” (Gen. 6:5-13)
4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them
to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;
(2 Pet. 2:4)
6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority
but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness,
bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. (Jude
6)
1 The LORD then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your
whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.
2 Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male
and its mate, and one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male
and its mate, 3 and also seven pairs of every kind of bird, male
and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth.
4 Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days
and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every
living creature I have made.”
5 And Noah did all that the LORD commanded him.
6 Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came on the
earth. 7 And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’
wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood. 8 Pairs
of clean and unclean animals, of birds and of all creatures that
move along the ground, 9 male and female, came to Noah and entered
the ark, as God had commanded Noah. 10 And after the seven days
the floodwaters came on the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth
day of the second month—on that day all the springs of the
great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.
12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.
13 On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together
with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark.
14 They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all
livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along
the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its
kind, everything with wings. 15 Pairs of all creatures that have
the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark. 16
The animals going in were male and female of every living thing,
as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD shut him in.
17 For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the
waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. 18 The
waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated
on the surface of the water. 19 They rose greatly on the earth,
and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered.
20 The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more
than fifteen cubits. 21 Every living thing that moved on land perished—birds,
livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth,
and all mankind. 22 Everything on dry land that had the breath of
life in its nostrils died.
23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; people
and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the
birds were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with
him in the ark.
24 The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days. (Gen.
7:1-24)
