Session #10 - Seven Bowls of Wrath - Bible Verse Hand Book
Session 10 Seven Bowls of Wrath (Rev. 15-16)
I. INTRODUCTION TO THE SEVEN BOWLS OF WRATH (REV. 15:1-16:21)
A. 15The seventh angel sounded: And there were
loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world
have become the kingdoms of our Lord…and He shall reign forever
and ever!” (Rev. 11:15)
B. Paul prophesied that the rapture would occur at the
last trumpet
51Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we
shall all be changed—52in a moment, in the twinkling of an
eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead
will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed [the rapture].
(1 Cor. 15:51-52)
Paul’s “last trumpet” is the seventh
trumpet mentioned in Revelation
7 But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his
trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced
to his servants the prophets.” (Rev.10:7)
15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices
in heaven, which said:
“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,
and he will reign for ever and ever.” (Rev.11:15)
C. Jesus called His people “to see” the abomination
of desolation and then pointed to the prophesies of Daniel to understand
it
15“When you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’
spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place”
(whoever reads, let him understand), 16“then let
those who are in Judea flee to the mountains…21then there
will be great tribulation, such as has not been.” (Mt. 24:15-21)
4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is
called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s
temple, proclaiming himself to be God. (2 Thes. 2:4)
14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf
of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It
ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded
by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast was given power
to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image
could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be
killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and
poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or
on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless
they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number
of its name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate
the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number
is 666. (Rev. 13:14-18)
1. Daniel prophesied that the abomination of desolation
would last for 1,290 days (43 months).
11From the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the
abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand
two hundred and ninety days [1,290 days]. (Dan.
12:11)
D. Notice that John’s 1,260 days (42 months)
are 30 days short of Daniel’s time period.
John highlighted three activities that would continue for
exactly 1,260 days (42 months).
1. Provision:
6 The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her
by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.
(Rev. 12:6, 14)
2. Prophecy:
3 And I will appoint my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for
1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.” (Rev. 11:3)
3. Persecution:
25 He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people
and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will
be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time. (Dan.
7:25)
5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies
and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened
its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling
place and those who live in heaven. 7 It was given power to wage
war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it
was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.
8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all
whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life,
the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world (Rev.
13:5-8)
Oppress Jerusalem
2 But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has
been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for
42 months. (Rev. 11:2)
7 The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river,
lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard
him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “It will be for
a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people
has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.”
(Dan. 12:7)
F. After the 1,260 days (42 months, or 3½ years)
of the abomination of desolation, the seventh trumpet will
sound, the Church will be raptured.
15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices
in heaven, which said:
“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,
and he will reign for ever and ever.” (Rev. 11:15)
The Antichrist’s unchallenged domination of Jerusalem
will come to an end.
14 They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph
over them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings—and
with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.”
(Rev. 17:14)
11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse,
whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges
and wages war.
19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies
gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and
his army. (Rev. 19:11, 19)
G. Jesus will pour out the bowls of wrath on the Antichrist
in the 43rd month
(Rev. 16)
H. The resisters are the unsaved survivors of the Great
Tribulation
3 Those who are left in Zion, who remain in Jerusalem, will be
called holy, all who are recorded among the living in Jerusalem.
(Isa. 4:3)
20 In that day the remnant of Israel,
the survivors of Jacob,
will no longer rely on him
who struck them down
but will truly rely on the LORD,
the Holy One of Israel. (Isa. 10:20)
11 In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to
reclaim the surviving remnant of his people from Assyria, from Lower
Egypt, from Upper Egypt, from Cush, from Elam, from Babylonia, from
Hamath and from the islands of the Mediterranean. (Isa.
11:11)
6 He says:
“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant
to restore the tribes of Jacob
and bring back those of Israel I have kept.
I will also make you a light for the Gentiles,
that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” (Isa.
49:6)
19 “I will set a sign among them, and I will send some of
those who survive to the nations—to Tarshish, to the Libyans[b]
and Lydians (famous as archers), to Tubal and Greece, and to the
distant islands that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory.
They will proclaim my glory among the nations. (Isa. 66:19)
2 This is what the LORD says:
“The people who survive the sword
will find favor in the wilderness;
I will come to give rest to Israel.” (Jer. 31:2)
38 I will purge you of those who revolt and rebel against me. Although
I will bring them out of the land where they are living, yet they
will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am
the LORD.
39 “‘As for you, people of Israel, this is what the
Sovereign LORD says: Go and serve your idols, every one of you!
But afterward you will surely listen to me and no longer profane
my holy name with your gifts and idols. 40 For on my holy mountain,
the high mountain of Israel, declares the Sovereign LORD, there
in the land all the people of Israel will serve me, and there I
will accept them. There I will require your offerings and your choice
gifts, along with all your holy sacrifices. 41 I will accept you
as fragrant incense when I bring you out from the nations and gather
you from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will
be proved holy through you in the sight of the nations. 42 Then
you will know that I am the LORD, when I bring you into the land
of Israel, the land I had sworn with uplifted hand to give to your
ancestors (Ezek. 20:38-42)
36 Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the
LORD have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was
desolate. I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it.’ (Ezek.
36:36)
“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your
people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has
not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that
time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the
book—will be delivered. (Dan. 12:1)
32 And everyone who calls
on the name of the LORD will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
there will be deliverance,
as the LORD has said,
even among the survivors
whom the LORD calls. (Joel 2:32)
8 In the whole land,” declares the LORD,
“two-thirds will be struck down and perish;
yet one-third will be left in it. (Zech. 13:8)
16 Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem
will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD Almighty,
and to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. (Zech. 14:16)
II. JESUS’ ROYAL PROCESSION: THREE STAGES
A. Stage 1: Jesus’ procession across the sky
to rapture the Church
31And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet,
and they will gather [rapture] together His elect [saints]
from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
(Mt. 24:30-31)
7 Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him,
even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will
mourn because of Him. (Rev. 1:7)
Stage 2: Jesus’ procession on the land, marching
through Edom (Jordan) to Israel
1 Who is this who comes from Edom [modern Jordan], with
dyed garments from Bozrah [ancient capital of Edom], this One [Jesus]
who is glorious in His apparel, traveling in the greatness of His
strength?—“I [Jesus] who speak in righteousness,
mighty to save.” 2 Why is Your apparel red, and Your garments
like one who treads in the winepress? 3 “I have trodden the
winepress… and trampled them in My fury; their blood is sprinkled
upon My garments, and I have stained all My robes. 4 For the day
of vengeance is in My heart, and the year of My redeemed has come.”
(Isa. 63:1-4)
3 Gird your sword on your side, you mighty one;
clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.
4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously
in the cause of truth, humility and justice;
let your right hand achieve awesome deeds.
5 Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s enemies;
let the nations fall beneath your feet. (Ps. 45:3-5)
5 The Lord is at your right hand;
he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead
and crushing the rulers of the whole earth. (Ps. 110:5-6)
Stage 3: Jesus’ procession into Jerusalem followed
by His coronation
4 On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east
of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from
east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain
moving north and half moving south. (Zech. 14:4)
7 Lift up your heads, you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
The LORD strong and mighty,
the LORD mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, you gates;
lift them up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
The LORD Almighty—
he is the King of glory. (Ps. 24:7-10)
39“You shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed
is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’” (Mt.
23:39)
The sign: Jesus will come with all the angels and saints
from heaven
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels
with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. (Mt. 25:31)
13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless
and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus
comes with all his holy ones. (1 Thes. 3:13)
27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory
with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to
what they have done. (Mt. 16:27)
26 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in
clouds with great power and glory. (Mk. 13:26)
6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you
7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This
will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing
fire with his powerful angels. 8 He will punish those who do not
know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will
be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence
of the Lord and from the glory of his might 10 on the day he comes
to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all
those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed
our testimony to you.
(2 Thes. 1:6-10)
14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe
that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are
still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly
not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself
will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice
of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead
in Christ will rise first. (1 Thes. 4:14-16)
E. Jesus will show Himself as the “greater Moses”
16 There will be a highway for the remnant of his people
that is left from Assyria,
as there was for Israel
when they came up from Egypt. (Isa. 11:16)
13 And in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing
in Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship
the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem. (Isa. 27:13)
11 They will come from Egypt,
trembling like sparrows,
from Assyria, fluttering like doves.
I will settle them in their homes,”
declares the LORD. (Hos. 11:11)
10 I will bring them back from Egypt
and gather them from Assyria.
I will bring them to Gilead and Lebanon,
and there will not be room enough for them.
11 They will pass through the sea of trouble;
the surging sea will be subdued
and all the depths of the Nile will dry up.
Assyria’s pride will be brought down
and Egypt’s scepter will pass away. (Zech. 10:10-11)
III. THE HEAVENLY CONTEXT OF THE RELEASE OF THE BOWLS OF
WRATH (REV. 15)
A. John saw end-time believers, victorious over the Antichrist.
1 I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous: angels having
the seven last plagues, for in them the wrath of God is complete.
2 I saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire, and those
who have the victory over the Beast [Antichrist]…standing
on the sea of glass…
3 They sing the song of Moses…and the song of the Lamb,
saying: “Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty!
Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints…4 For all
nations shall… worship before You, for Your judgments have
been manifested.”
(Rev. 15:1-4)
7 But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his
trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced
to his servants the prophets.” (Rev. 10:7)
15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices
in heaven, which said:
“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,
and he will reign for ever and ever.” (Rev.11:15)
B. The temple opened in heaven, and seven angels received seven
bowls of wrath
5 After these things…the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony
in heaven was opened. 6 And out of the temple came the seven angels
having the seven plagues, clothed in pure bright linen, and having
their chests girded with golden bands. 7 Then one of the four living
creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the
wrath of God who lives forever and ever. 8 The temple was filled
with smoke from the glory of God and from His power, and no one
was able to enter the temple till the seven plagues of the seven
angels were completed. (Rev. 15:5-8)
IV. THE SEVEN BOWLS OF GOD’S WRATH (REV. 16): THE
FIRST FIVE BOWLS
A. The seven angels will be commissioned in the heavenly
temple to pour out the bowls of wrath.
1 I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels,
“Go and pour out the bowls of the wrath of God on the earth.”
(Rev. 16:1)
B. First bowl (sores):
2 The first went and poured out his bowl…and a foul and loathsome
sore came upon the men who had the mark of the beast [Antichrist].
(Rev. 16:2)
C. Second bowl (food supply):
Then the second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it became
blood as of a dead man; and every living creature in the sea died.
(Rev. 16:3)
D. Third bowl (water supply):
4 Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs
of water, and they became blood. 5 I heard the angel of the waters
saying: “You are righteous, O Lord…because You have
judged these things. 6 For they have shed the blood of saints and
prophets, and You have given them blood to drink. For it is their
just due.” 7 I heard another from the altar [heavenly
intercession] saying, “Even so, Lord God Almighty, true
and righteous are Your judgments.” (Rev. 16:4-7)
The third trumpet is similar to the third bowl in that
it defiles the drinking water.
10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing
like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on
the springs of water— (Rev. 8:10)
The first plague on Egypt struck the Nile with a similar
impact to this
19 The LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your
staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt—over
the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs—and
they will turn to blood.’ Blood will be everywhere in Egypt,
even in vessels[a] of wood and stone.”
20 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded. He raised
his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck
the water of the Nile, and all the water was changed into blood.
21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that
the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in
Egypt. (Ex. 7:19-21)
E. Fourth bowl (torment):
8 The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was
given to him to scorch men with fire. 9 And men were scorched with
great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over
these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.
(Rev. 16:8-9)
F. Fifth bowl (darkness):
10The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast,
and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues
because of the pain. 11They blasphemed God…because of their
pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.
(Rev. 16:10-11)
The ninth plague of Egypt caused darkness for three days
21 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward
the sky so that darkness spreads over Egypt—darkness that
can be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward the
sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. 23 No
one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all
the Israelites had light in the places where they lived. (Ex.
10:21-23)
G. The Antichrist’s worshipers will not repent, but
will blaspheme God
9 They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name
of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to
repent and glorify him.
11 and cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and their
sores, but they refused to repent of what they had done.
21 From the sky huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred
pounds,[a] fell on people. And they cursed God on account of the
plague of hail, because the plague was so terrible. (Rev.
16:9, 11, 21)
V. SIXTH BOWL: DEMONS LURE THE NATIONS TO ARMAGEDDON
A. Sixth bowl (global guilt):
12The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the river Euphrates, and
its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east
might be prepared. 13I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming
out of the mouth of the dragon [Satan], out of the mouth of the
beast [Antichrist], and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14They
are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings
of the earth…to gather them to the Battle of that great day
of God Almighty… 16They gathered them together to…Armageddon. (Rev. 16:12-16)
B. 14These [the 10 kings] will make war with the Lamb...for
He is…King of kings (Rev. 17:14)
19I saw the beast [Antichrist], the kings of the earth,
and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him
[Jesus]…and against His army. (Rev. 19:19)
B. The kings of the nations will see the sign of the Son
of Man in the sky
30The sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven…all the
tribes of the earth will mourn… they will see the Son of Man
coming on the clouds...with power and great glory. (Mt.
24:30)
E. The Pharisees accused Jesus of doing miracles by Satan’s
power
24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only
by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out
demons.” (Mt. 12:24)
32“Whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be
forgiven him.” (Mt. 12:32)
F. I see the sixth bowl as global blasphemy against the Spirit
as the nations receive “the lie”
9 The coming of the lawless one [Antichrist]…with
all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10and with all unrighteous
deception…because they did not receive the love of the truth…11For
this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should
believe the lie. (2 Thes. 2:9-11)
VI. SEVENTH BOWL: EARTHQUAKES AND HAILSTONES
A. Seventh bowl (annihilation):
17…poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice...
from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18...there was
a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not
occurred since men were on the earth. 19Now the great city [Jerusalem]
was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell.
And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup
of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20Then every island
fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21And great hail from
heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent
[100 pounds]. Men blasphemed God… (Rev. 16:17-21)
C. This last earthquake will cause islands to flee (sink
in the ocean) and the mountains to fall
20 Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.
(Rev. 16:20)
D. A 100-pound hailstone hits the ground with the equivalent
force of two tons.
Hail was released in the first trumpet
7 The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and
fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third
of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up,
and all the green grass was burned up. (Rev. 8:7)
The seventh plague on Egypt with Moses
23 When Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, the LORD
sent thunder and hail, and lightning flashed down to the ground.
So the LORD rained hail on the land of Egypt; 24 hail fell and lightning
flashed back and forth. It was the worst storm in all the land of
Egypt since it had become a nation. (Ex. 9:23-24)
22I will bring him [Antichrist] to judgment…I will
rain down on…his troops, and on the many peoples who are with
him, flooding rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. (Ezek.
38:22)
D. The next event after the seven bowls is Jesus’
triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
11Behold, a white horse. He [Jesus] who sat on him…judges
and makes war…13He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood…19I
saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered
together to make war against Him…20Then the beast was captured,
and…cast alive into the lake of fire…21The rest were
killed with the sword…
(Rev. 19:11-21)
