II. INTRODUCTION
Daniel 10 is the context for Daniel receiving his fourth
vision that is described in Daniel 11-
21 “He will be succeeded by a contemptible person who has
not been given the honor of royalty. He will invade the kingdom
when its people feel secure, and he will seize it through intrigue.
22 Then an overwhelming army will be swept away before him; both
it and a prince of the covenant will be destroyed. 23 After coming
to an agreement with him, he will act deceitfully, and with only
a few people he will rise to power. 24 When the richest provinces
feel secure, he will invade them and will achieve what neither his
fathers nor his forefathers did. He will distribute plunder, loot
and wealth among his followers. He will plot the overthrow of fortresses—but
only for a time.
25 “With a large army he will stir up his strength and courage
against the king of the South. The king of the South will wage war
with a large and very powerful army, but he will not be able to
stand because of the plots devised against him. 26 Those who eat
from the king’s provisions will try to destroy him; his army
will be swept away, and many will fall in battle. 27 The two kings,
with their hearts bent on evil, will sit at the same table and lie
to each other, but to no avail, because an end will still come at
the appointed time. 28 The king of the North will return to his
own country with great wealth, but his heart will be set against
the holy covenant. He will take action against it and then return
to his own country.
29 “At the appointed time he will invade the South again,
but this time the outcome will be different from what it was before.
30 Ships of the western coastlands will oppose him, and he will
lose heart. Then he will turn back and vent his fury against the
holy covenant. He will return and show favor to those who forsake
the holy covenant.
31 “His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple
fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set
up the abomination that causes desolation. 32 With flattery he will
corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who
know their God will firmly resist him.
33 “Those who are wise will instruct many, though for a time
they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered.
34 When they fall, they will receive a little help, and many who
are not sincere will join them. 35 Some of the wise will stumble,
so that they may be refined, purified and made spotless until the
time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.
The King Who Exalts Himself
36 “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify
himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the
God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed,
for what has been determined must take place. 37 He will show no
regard for the gods of his ancestors or for the one desired by women,
nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all.
38 Instead of them, he will honor a god of fortresses; a god unknown
to his ancestors he will honor with gold and silver, with precious
stones and costly gifts. 39 He will attack the mightiest fortresses
with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who
acknowledge him. He will make them rulers over many people and will
distribute the land at a price.
40 “At the time of the end the king of the South will engage
him in battle, and the king of the North will storm out against
him with chariots and cavalry and a great fleet of ships. He will
invade many countries and sweep through them like a flood. 41 He
will also invade the Beautiful Land. Many countries will fall, but
Edom, Moab and the leaders of Ammon will be delivered from his hand.
42 He will extend his power over many countries; Egypt will not
escape. 43 He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver
and all the riches of Egypt, with the Libyans and Cushites in submission.
44 But reports from the east and the north will alarm him, and he
will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many. 45
He will pitch his royal tents between the seas at the beautiful
holy mountain. Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help
him.
1 “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your
people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has
not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that
time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the
book—will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust
of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame
and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise will shine like the
brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness,
like the stars for ever and ever. (Dan. 11:21-12:3)
12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities,
against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,
against spiritual hosts…in the heavenly places. (Eph.
6:12)
1The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, like rivers
of water; He turns it wherever He wishes. (Pr. 21:1)
Paul said to pray for those in authority because it will affect
our lifestyle, families & economy.
1I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions,
and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who
are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life…
(1 Tim. 2:1-2)
III. CONTEXT OF THE FOURTH VISION (DAN. 10:1-3)
1In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia [536 BC] a message was
revealed to Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar. The message
was true, but the appointed time was long; and he understood the
message, and had understanding of the vision. (Dan. 10:1)
Darius the Mede
1 And in the first year of Darius the Mede, I took my stand to
support and protect him.
(Dan. 11:1)
Son of Ahasuerus
In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes (a Mede by descent),
who was made ruler over the Babylonian kingdom— (Dan.
9:1)
Daniel was mourning for Israel because of what was happening with
the remnant
2In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. 3I ate
no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I
anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled. (Dan.
10:2-3)
IV. WHAT IS A DANIEL FAST?
In Daniel 10:3 we learn that Daniel ate no meat or tasty foods
and drank no wine.
3I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth…[for]
three whole weeks… (Dan. 10:3)
In Daniel 1:12 we see that he ate vegetables and drank
water.
12…ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water
to drink. (Dan. 1:12)
V. THE MIGHTY ANGEL AND ITS IMPACT ON DANIEL (DAN. 10:4-6)
Daniel saw a high-ranking mighty angel
4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing
on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, 5 I looked up and there
before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from
Uphaz around his waist. 6 His body was like topaz, his face like
lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like
the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a
multitude. (Dan. 10:4-6)
John saw a mighty angel like this one
1I saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed
with a cloud. And a rainbow was on his head, his face was like the
sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. (Rev. 10:1)
Linen is worn by some angels
3 Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub,
where it had been, to the threshold of the temple. And He called
to the man clothed with linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn
at his side; (Ezek. 9:3)
5 I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, a certain man clothed
in linen, whose waist was girded with gold of Uphaz! (Dan.
10:5)
6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters
of the river, “How long shall the fulfillment of these wonders
be?”
7 Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters
of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to
heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for
a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people
has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished.
(Dan. 12:6-7)
6 And out of the [e]temple came the seven angels having the seven
plagues, clothed in pure bright linen, and having their chests girded
with golden bands. (Rev. 15:6)
Priests
5 “They shall take the gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread,
and the fine linen, (Ex. 28:5)
18 But Samuel ministered before the LORD, even as a child, wearing
a linen ephod. (1 Sam. 2:18)
18 And the king said to Doeg, “You turn and kill the priests!”
So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck the priests, and killed on
that day eighty-five men who wore a linen ephod. (1 Sam.
22:18)
The saints
8 And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean
and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.
(Rev. 19:8)
Daniel was deeply impacted by this angel
7And I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, for the men who were with
me did not see the vision; but a great terror fell upon them, so
that they fled to hide themselves. 8Therefore I was left alone when
I saw this great vision, and no strength remained in me; for my
vigor was turned to frailty in me, and I retained no strength. 9Yet
I heard the sound of his words; and while I heard the sound of his
words I was in a deep sleep on my face, with my face to the ground.
(Dan. 10:7-9)
The vision of Daniel 11-12
8 Therefore I was left alone when I saw this great vision, and
no strength remained in me; for my [d]vigor was turned to frailty
in me, and I retained no strength. (Dan. 10:8)
15When he had spoken such words to me, I turned my face toward
the ground and became speechless…16I opened my mouth and spoke,
saying to him who stood before me, “My lord, because of the
vision my sorrows have overwhelmed me, and I have retained no strength.
(Dan. 10:15-16)
VI. THE ANGEL’S CONFLICT RELATED TO DANIEL’S
PRAYER (DAN. 10:10-14)
11And he [angel] said to me, “O Daniel, man greatly
beloved, understand the words that I speak to you…12for from
the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble
yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come
because of your words. 13But the prince [demonic principality]
of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold,
Michael, one of the chief princes [archangel], came to
help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia.
(Dan. 10:11-13)
Set your heart to understand: The angel gave Daniel understanding
12 Then he said to me, “Do not fear, Daniel, for from the
first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself
before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because
of your words.
14 Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to
your people in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days
yet to come.” (Dan. 10:12, 14)
Greatly beloved: The Lord revealed His love to Daniel in
a fresh and deep way
11 And he said to me, “O Daniel, man greatly beloved, understand
the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for I have now
been sent to you.” While he was speaking this word to me,
I stood trembling.
19 And he said, “O man greatly beloved, fear not! Peace be
to you; be strong, yes, be strong!”
So when he spoke to me I was strengthened, and said, “Let
my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.” (Dan.
10:11, 19)
Jesus spoke of the Father loving all who obey Him.
21“He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who
loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I
will love him and manifest Myself to him.” (Jn. 14:21)
Withstood me:
13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one
days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help
me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia.
20 Then he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? And
now I must return to fight with the prince of Persia; and when I
have gone forth, indeed the prince of Greece will come. 21 But I
will tell you what is noted in the Scripture of Truth. (No one
upholds me against these, except Michael your prince.) (Dan.
10:13, 20-21)
Archangels:
“At that time Michael shall stand up,
The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people;
And there shall be a time of trouble,
Such as never was since there was a nation,
Even to that time.
And at that time your people shall be delivered,
Every one who is found written in the book. (Dan. 12:1)
(Jude 9)
In the end times Michael will again stand up to help Israel
1“At that time [the end times] Michael shall stand
up, the great prince [archangel] who stands watch over
the sons of your people [Israel]; and there shall be a
time of trouble [Great Tribulation], such as never was
since there was a nation, even to that time. And at that time your
people [Israel] shall be delivered…” (Dan. 12:1)
8 Although I heard, I did not understand. Then I said, “My
lord, what shall be the end of these things?”
9 And he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed
up and sealed till the time of the end. 10 Many shall be purified,
made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none
of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand.
(Rev. 12:7-9)
The mighty angel’s continued conflict
20Then he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? And
now I must return to fight with the prince of Persia; and when I
have gone forth, indeed the prince of Greece will come. 21But I
will tell you what is noted in the Scripture of Truth. No one upholds
me against these, except Michael your prince.” 11:1“Also
in the first year of Darius the Mede [538 BC, two years earlier],
I, even I, stood up to confirm and strengthen him [Michael].”
(Dan. 10:20-11:1)
The restoration of Jerusalem and temple came in God’s
timing.
The story of this restoration is found in three passages
in Ezra, Haggai and Zech.
Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the descendants
of the captivity were building the temple of the LORD God of Israel,
2 they came to Zerubbabel and the heads of the fathers’ houses,
and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we seek your
God as you do; and we have sacrificed to Him since the days of Esarhaddon
king of Assyria, who brought us here.” 3 But Zerubbabel and
Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the fathers’ houses of
Israel said to them, “You may do nothing with us to build
a house for our God; but we alone will build to the LORD God of
Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”
4 Then the people of the land tried to discourage the people of
Judah. They troubled them in building, 5 and hired counselors against
them to frustrate their purpose all the days of Cyrus king of Persia,
even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
24 Thus the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem ceased,
and it was discontinued until the second year of the reign of Darius
king of Persia. (Ezra 4:1-5; 24)
Then the prophet Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophets,
prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name
of the God of Israel, who was over them. 2 So Zerubbabel the son
of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak rose up and began to
build the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and the prophets of
God were with them, helping them. (Ezra 5:1-2)
In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first
day of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet
to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua
the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying, 2 “Thus speaks
the LORD of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time
has not come, the time that the LORD’s house should be built.”
’ ”
3 Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying,
4 “Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled
houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?” 5 Now therefore,
thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways!
6 “You have sown much, and bring in little;
You eat, but do not have enough;
You drink, but you are not filled with drink;
You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm;
And he who earns wages,
Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”
7 Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways! 8 Go up
to the mountains and bring wood and build the [b]temple, that I
may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the LORD.
9 “You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and
when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says the LORD
of hosts. “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every
one of you runs to his own house. 10 Therefore the heavens above
you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit. 11 For
I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain
and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth,
on men and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”
(Hag. 1:1-11)
In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the
LORD came to Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the
prophet, saying, 2 “The LORD has been very angry with your
fathers. 3 Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts:
“Return to Me,” says the LORD of hosts, “and I
will return to you,” says the LORD of hosts. 4 “Do not
be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets preached, saying,
‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Turn now from your evil
ways and your evil deeds.” ’ But they did not hear nor
heed Me,” says the LORD.
5 “Your fathers, where are they?
And the prophets, do they live forever?
6 Yet surely My words and My statutes,
Which I commanded My servants the prophets,
Did they not overtake your fathers?
“So they returned and said:
‘Just as the LORD of hosts determined to do to us,
According to our ways and according to our deeds,
So He has dealt with us.’ ” ’ ” (Zech.
1:1-6)
Gabriel prophesied that the blessing of the restoration
of Jerusalem would occur in the context of trouble and difficulty.
25…to restore and build Jerusalem…the street [open
square] shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome
times. (Dan. 9:25)
The demonic principality of Persia/Iran who resisted this
angel is still very powerful today.
3“I am against you, O Gog [Antichrist]… 4I
will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out,
with all your army…5“Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya are
with them [Antichrist’s army], all of them with shield
and helmet; 6Gomer [Turkey] and all its troops; the house
of Togarmah [eastern Turkey] from the far north and all
its troops…” (Ezek. 38:3-6)
Michael will again stand up to fight for Israel and will
cast Satan down
7And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with
the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought…9The great
dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan…he
was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. (Rev.12:7-9)
VII. THE LIFE OF DANIEL: THE POWER OF A LIFE DEDICATED
TO GOD
The effectiveness of his life was undergirded by a lifetime
of prayer
10Daniel…knelt down on his knees three times that day, and
prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early
days. (Dan. 6:10)
Setting his heart to walk in wholeheartedness
8But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself
with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine
which he drank… (Dan. 1:8)
Gain understanding
12“Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set
your heart to understand and to humble yourself before your God,
your words were heard…” (Dan. 10:12)
13“When a land sins against Me by persistent unfaithfulness,
I will stretch out My hand against it; I will cut off its supply
of bread, send famine on it…14Even if these three men, Noah,
Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver only themselves”…
19“If I send a pestilence into that land and pour out My fury
on it…20even though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it…they
would deliver only themselves by their righteousness.” (Ezek.
14:13-20)
The forerunner spirit:
One emphasis in all four visions was for Daniel to understand
God’s end-time plan.
16 I came near to one of those who stood by, and asked him the
truth of all this. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation
of these things: (Dan. 7:16)
15 Then it happened, when I, Daniel, had seen the vision and was
seeking the meaning, that suddenly there stood before me one having
the appearance of a man. 16 And I heard a man’s voice between
the banks of the Ulai, who called, and said, “Gabriel, make
this man understand the vision.” 17 So he came near where
I stood, and when he came I was afraid and fell on my face; but
he said to me, “Understand, son of man, that the vision refers
to the time of the end.”
18 Now, as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep with
my face to the ground; but he touched me, and stood me upright.
19 And he said, “Look, I am making known to you what shall
happen in the latter time of the indignation; for at the appointed
time the end shall be. (Dan. 8:15-19)
2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books
the number of the years specified by the word of the LORD through
Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in
the desolations of Jerusalem.
3 Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer
and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. (Dan.
9:2-3)
22“O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand.”
(Dan. 9:22)
In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a message was revealed
to Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar. The message was true,
but the appointed time was long; and he understood the message,
and had understanding of the vision. (Dan. 10:1)
12“…you [Daniel] set your heart to understand…14Now
I [an angel] have come to make you understand what will
happen to your people in the latter days…” (Dan.
10:12-14)
. 33 And those of the people who understand shall instruct many;
yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity
and plundering. 34 Now when they fall, they shall be aided with
a little help; but many shall join with them by intrigue. 35 And
some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify
them, and make them white, until the time of the end; because it
is still for the appointed time. (Dan. 11:33- 35)
4 “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book
until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge
shall increase.”
9 And he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed
up and sealed till the time of the end. 10 Many shall be purified,
made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none
of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand.
(Dan. 12:4, 9-10)
