Session 8 The 70-Weeks Prophecy: An Overview (Dan. 9:24-27)
I. REVIEW OF DANIEL 9:24
Gabriel revealed that 70 weeks (490 years) were determined
by God to prepare Israel to receive her national salvation and to
walk in her worldwide leadership role in the Millennium
2 In the last days
the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established
as the highest of the mountains;
it will be exalted above the hills,
and all nations will stream to it.
3 Many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
4 He will judge between the nations
and will settle disputes for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation,
nor will they train for war anymore. (Isa. 2:2-4)
24“Seventy weeks [490 years] are determined for your people
and for your holy city [Jerusalem], to finish the transgression,
to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to
bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy,
and to anoint the Most Holy.” (Dan. 9:24)
To make an end of sins:
21 Then all your people will be righteous
and they will possess the land forever.
They are the shoot I have planted,
the work of my hands,
for the display of my splendor. (Isa. 60:21)
To make reconciliation includes healing and cleansing the
land
14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves
and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then
I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal
their land. (2 Chr. 7:14)
2 “On that day, I will banish the names of the idols from
the land, and they will be remembered no more,” declares the
LORD Almighty. “I will remove both the prophets and the spirit
of impurity from the land. (Zech. 13:2)
Jeremiah’s prophecy: Israel would suffer under the
Gentiles for 70 years
12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will
listen to you. (Jer. 29:12)
II. OVERVIEW OF DANIEL 9:25-27
25“…from the going forth of the command [458 BC]
to restore…Jerusalem until Messiah…there shall be seven
weeks [49 years; 409 BC] and sixty-two weeks [434 years; AD
27]…26After the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut
off [killed; AD 30]…and the people of the prince
who is to come [Antichrist] shall destroy the city [Jerusalem;
AD 70]…27Then he [the Antichrist] shall confirm a covenant
with many for one week [7 years]; but in the middle of
the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering [break
the covenant]. And on the wing of abominations shall be one
[the Antichrist] who makes desolate, even until the consummation
[judgment], which is determined, is poured out on the desolate
[the Antichrist].” (Dan. 9:25-27)
III. MESSIAH WAS TO COME AFTER JERUSALEM WAS RESTORED (DAN.
9:25)
25“Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth
of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the
Prince [Jesus], there shall be seven weeks [49 years; 409 BC]
and sixty-two weeks [434 years; AD 27]; the street
[open square] shall be built again, and the wall [409 BC],
even in troublesome times. (Dan. 9:25)
Know and understand:
16 I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning
of all this.
“So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things:
19 “Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast,
which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with
its iron teeth and bronze claws—the beast that crushed and
devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. (Dan.
7:16, 19)
15 While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand
it, there before me stood one who looked like a man. 16 And I heard
a man’s voice from the Ulai calling, “Gabriel, tell
this man the meaning of the vision.”
17 As he came near the place where I was standing, I was terrified
and fell prostrate. “Son of man,” he said to me, “understand
that the vision concerns the time of the end.” (Dan.
8:15-17)
3 So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and
petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.
22 He instructed me and said to me, “Daniel, I have now come
to give you insight and understanding. 23 As soon as you began to
pray, a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are
highly esteemed. Therefore, consider the word and understand the
vision:
25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes
out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the
ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two
‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench,
but in times of trouble. (Dan. 9:3, 22-23, 25)
3 I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I
used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.
10 A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees.
11 He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider
carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for
I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me,
I stood up trembling.
12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the
first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble
yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come
in response to them. 13 But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted
me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came
to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.
14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people
in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.”
(Dan. 10:3, 10-14)
33 “Those who are wise will instruct many, though for a time
they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered.
35 Some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined,
purified and made spotless until the time of the end, for it will
still come at the appointed time. (Dan. 11:33, 35)
4 But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until
the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.”
8 I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord,
what will the outcome of all this be?”
9 He replied, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are
rolled up and sealed until the time of the end. 10 Many will be
purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue
to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who
are wise will understand. (Dan. 12:4, 8-10)
Troublesome times:
1 When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became
angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, 2 and in
the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said,
“What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their
wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can
they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned
as they are?”
3 Tobiah the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, “What they
are building—even a fox climbing up on it would break down
their wall of stones!”
4 Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back
on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity.
5 Do not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight,
for they have thrown insults in the face of the builders. (Neh.
4:l-4)
36 “But see, we are slaves today, slaves in the land you
gave our ancestors so they could eat its fruit and the other good
things it produces. 37 Because of our sins, its abundant harvest
goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies
and our cattle as they please. We are in great distress. (Neh.
9:36-37)
The command: Gabriel made it clear that a Gentile king
would give a decree to rebuild Jerusalem.
44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within
your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you
did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
(Lk. 19:44)
Four Persian commands:
14The Jews…built…according to the command of Cyrus,
Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia. (Ezra 6:14)
King Artaxerxes’ decree to Ezra in 458 BC
12 The king should know that the people who came up to us from
you have gone to Jerusalem and are rebuilding that rebellious and
wicked city. They are restoring the walls and repairing the foundations.
13 Furthermore, the king should know that if this city is built
and its walls are restored, no more taxes, tribute or duty will
be paid, and eventually the royal revenues will suffer. 14 Now since
we are under obligation to the palace and it is not proper for us
to see the king dishonored, we are sending this message to inform
the king, 15 so that a search may be made in the archives of your
predecessors. In these records you will find that this city is a
rebellious city, troublesome to kings and provinces, a place with
a long history of sedition. That is why this city was destroyed.
16 We inform the king that if this city is built and its walls are
restored, you will be left with nothing in Trans-Euphrates.
17 The king sent this reply:
To Rehum the commanding officer, Shimshai the secretary and the
rest of their associates living in Samaria and elsewhere in Trans-Euphrates:
Greetings.
18 The letter you sent us has been read and translated in my presence.
19 I issued an order and a search was made, and it was found that
this city has a long history of revolt against kings and has been
a place of rebellion and sedition. 20 Jerusalem has had powerful
kings ruling over the whole of Trans-Euphrates, and taxes, tribute
and duty were paid to them. 21 Now issue an order to these men to
stop work, so that this city will not be rebuilt until I so order.
(Ezra 4:12-21)
11 This is a copy of the letter King Artaxerxes had given to Ezra
the priest, a teacher of the Law, a man learned in matters concerning
the commands and decrees of the LORD for Israel:
12 Artaxerxes, king of kings, To Ezra the priest, teacher of the
Law of the God of heaven: Greetings.
13 Now I decree that any of the Israelites in my kingdom, including
priests and Levites, who volunteer to go to Jerusalem with you,
may go. 14 You are sent by the king and his seven advisers to inquire
about Judah and Jerusalem with regard to the Law of your God, which
is in your hand. 15 Moreover, you are to take with you the silver
and gold that the king and his advisers have freely given to the
God of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, 16 together with
all the silver and gold you may obtain from the province of Babylon,
as well as the freewill offerings of the people and priests for
the temple of their God in Jerusalem.
17 With this money be sure to buy bulls, rams and male lambs, together
with their grain offerings and drink offerings, and sacrifice them
on the altar of the temple of your God in Jerusalem.
18 You and your fellow Israelites may then do whatever seems best
with the rest of the silver and gold, in accordance with the will
of your God. 19 Deliver to the God of Jerusalem all the articles
entrusted to you for worship in the temple of your God. 20 And anything
else needed for the temple of your God that you are responsible
to supply, you may provide from the royal treasury.
21 Now I, King Artaxerxes, decree that all the treasurers of Trans-Euphrates
are to provide with diligence whatever Ezra the priest, the teacher
of the Law of the God of heaven, may ask of you— 22 up to
a hundred talents of silver, a hundred cors of wheat, a hundred
baths[c] of wine, a hundred baths[d] of olive oil, and salt without
limit. 23 Whatever the God of heaven has prescribed, let it be done
with diligence for the temple of the God of heaven. Why should his
wrath fall on the realm of the king and of his sons? 24 You are
also to know that you have no authority to impose taxes, tribute
or duty on any of the priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers,
temple servants or other workers at this house of God.
25 And you, Ezra, in accordance with the wisdom of your God, which
you possess, appoint magistrates and judges to administer justice
to all the people of Trans-Euphrates—all who know the laws
of your God. And you are to teach any who do not know them. 26 Whoever
does not obey the law of your God and the law of the king must surely
be punished by death, banishment, confiscation of property, or imprisonment.
(Ezra 7:11-26)
9 Though we are slaves, our God has not forsaken us in our bondage.
He has shown us kindness in the sight of the kings of Persia: He
has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair
its ruins, and he has given us a wall of protection in Judah and
Jerusalem. (Ezra 9:9)
IV. MESSIAH WAS KILLED AND JERUSALEM DESTROYED (DAN. 9:26)
26“After the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off [killed],
but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come
[Antichrist] shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war
[AD 70] desolations are determined.” (Dan.
9:26)
Being cut off is an idiom for being killed—cut off
in death.
11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life
be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be
a flood to destroy the earth.” (Gen. 9:11)
14 “‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you.
Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any
work on that day must be cut off from their people. (Ex.
31:14)
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his
generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression
of my people he was punished. (Isa. 53:8)
19 I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did not
realize that they had plotted against me, saying, “Let us
destroy the tree and its fruit; let us cut him off from the land
of the living, that his name be remembered no more.” (Jer.
11:19)
V. THE ANTICHRIST WILL CAUSE DESOLATION (DAN. 9:27)
27“Then he [Antichrist] shall confirm a covenant
with many [nations] for one week [7 years]; but
in the middle of the week [3½ years] he shall bring
an end to sacrifice and offering [in the temple]. And on the wing
of abominations shall be one [Antichrist] who makes desolate, even
until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the
desolate [Antichrist].” (Dan. 9:27)
The Antichrist being thrown in the lake of fire
20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who
had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had deluded
those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.
The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning
sulfur. (Rev. 19:20)
Satan cast into prison
2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil,
or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. (Rev. 20:2)
VI. THE FINAL 7 YEARS
Many messianic prophecies have a gap of 2,000+ years between
Jesus’ first and second comings
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this. (Isa. 9:6-7)
2 He will not shout or cry out,
or raise his voice in the streets.
3 A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.
In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;
4 he will not falter or be discouraged
till he establishes justice on earth.
In his teaching the islands will put their hope.”
(Isa. 42:2-4)
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn, (Isa. 61:1-2)
9Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth. (Zech. 9:9-10)
1“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before
me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple;
the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,”
says the LORD Almighty. 2 But who can endure the day of his coming?
Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s
fire or a launderer’s soap.
(Mal. 3:1-2)
16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But
one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals
I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit
and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing
floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up
the chaff with unquenchable fire.” (Lk. 3:16-17)
Confirm a covenant with many: This covenant will be a political
alliance that brings peace and safety
3For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden
destruction [Great Tribulation] comes upon them, as labor
pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. (1
Thes. 5:3)
Middle of the week:
The middle of the week speaks of the 3½-year mark,
when the Antichrist shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering
in the Jerusalem temple, the Great Tribulation will begin
21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning
of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.
(Mt. 24:21)
14 I answered, “Sir, you know.” And he said, “These
are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed
their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
15 Therefore, “they are before the throne of God
and serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne
will shelter them with his presence. (Rev. 7:14)
This is the same 3½-year period referred to in Daniel.
25 He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people
and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will
be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.
(Dan.7:25)
One who makes desolate:
1“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your
people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has
not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that
time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the
book—will be delivered.
7 The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river,
lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard
him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “It will be for
a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people
has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.”
(Dan. 12:1, 7)
27 He shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and
for half of the week he shall make sacrifice and offering cease;
and in their place shall be an abomination that desolates, until
the decreed end is poured out upon the desolator.” (Dan.
9:27)
Determined:
23 The Lord, the LORD Almighty, will carry out
the destruction decreed upon the whole land. (Isa. 10:23)
17 And the land of Judah will bring terror to the Egyptians; everyone
to whom Judah is mentioned will be terrified, because of what the
LORD Almighty is planning against them. (Isa. 19:17)
22 Now stop your mocking,
or your chains will become heavier;
the Lord, the LORD Almighty, has told me
of the destruction decreed against the whole land. (Isa.
28:22)
24 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people
and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin,
to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness,
to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.
26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will
be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who
will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will
come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations
have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one
‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he
will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he
will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end
that is decreed is poured out on him. (Dan. 9:24, 26-27)
36 “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify
himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the
God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed,
for what has been determined must take place. (Dan. 11:36)
6 But did not my words and my decrees, which I commanded my servants
the prophets, overtake your ancestors? “Then they repented
and said, ‘The LORD Almighty has done to us what our ways
and practices deserve, just as he determined to do.’”
(Zech. 1:6)
14 This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Just as I had determined
to bring disaster on you and showed no pity when your ancestors
angered me,” says the LORD Almighty, 15 “so now I have
determined to do good again to Jerusalem and Judah. Do not be afraid.
(Zech. 8:14-15)
20 The anger of the LORD will not turn back
until he fully accomplishes
the purposes of his heart.
In days to come
you will understand it clearly. (Jer. 23:20)
24 The fierce anger of the LORD will not turn back
until he fully accomplishes
the purposes of his heart.
In days to come
you will understand this. (Jer. 30:24)
Daniel described the Antichrist’s judgment four times:
11 “Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words
the horn was speaking. I kept looking until the beast was slain
and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire. (Dan.
7:11)
26 “‘But the court will sit, and his power will be taken
away and completely destroyed forever. (Dan. 7:26)
25 He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself
superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his
stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be destroyed, but
not by human power. (Dan. 8:25)
45 He will pitch his royal tents between the seas at the beautiful
holy mountain. Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help
him. (Dan. 11:45)
8And then the lawless one [Antichrist] will be revealed,
whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy
with the brightness of His coming. (2 Thes. 2:8)
