Session#12: Details About the Tribulation
Session 12 Details About the Tribulation (Dan. 12:4-13)
I. REVIEW OF DANIEL 12:1-3
11:45He [the Antichrist] shall plant the tents of his
palace…[near] the holy mountain [Jerusalem]
yet, he shall come to his end… 12:1At that time Michael shall
stand up…and there shall be a time of trouble [Great Tribulation],
such as never was…And at that time your people [Israel]
shall be delivered…2Many of those who sleep in the dust of
the earth shall awake [resurrection], some to everlasting
life, some to shame and everlasting contempt.”3Those who are
wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those
who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever. (Dan.
11:45-12:3)
Great Tribulation:
15Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’
spoken of by Daniel the prophet…
21Then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since
the beginning of the world…22And unless those days were shortened,
no flesh would be saved… (Mt. 24:15, 21-22)
The Abomination of Desolation:
As described by Daniel
13 Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said
to that certain one who was speaking, “How long will the vision
be, concerning the daily sacrifices and the transgression of desolation,
the giving of both the sanctuary and the host to be trampled underfoot?”
(Dan. 8:13)
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.” (Dan. 9:27)
31 And forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the
sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices,
and place there the abomination of desolation. (Dan. 11:31)
11 “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away,
and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one
thousand two hundred and ninety days. (Dan. 12:11)
As described by Paul
3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come
unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed,
the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all
that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God
in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. (2
Thes. 2:3-4)
As described by John
11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he
had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. 12 And he exercises
all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes
the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast,
whose deadly wound was healed. 13 He performs great signs, so that
he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight
of men. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those
signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling
those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was
wounded by the sword and lived. 15 He was granted power to give
breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should
both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the
beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich
and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand
or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except
one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of
his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number
of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.
(Rev. 13:11-18)
4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no
one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I
am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.
11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.
24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great
signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. (Mt.
24:4-5, 11, 24)
5 And Jesus, answering them, began to say: “Take heed that
no one deceives you. 6 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I
am He,’ and will deceive many.
22 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs
and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. (Mk.
13:5-6, 22)
8 And He said: “Take heed that you not be deceived. For many
will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The
time has drawn near.’ Therefore do not go after them. (Lk.
21:8)
3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come
unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed,
the son of perdition,(Antichrist) (2 Thes. 2:3)
1Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart
from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of
demons, (1 Tim. 4:1)
13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving
and being deceived. (2 Tim. 3:13)
II. TWO IMPORTANT SIGNS (12:4)
4“But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until
the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall
increase.” (Dan. 12:4)
Seal the book:
23In the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors have
reached their fullness, a king [Antichrist] shall arise…who
understands sinister schemes. (Dan. 8:23)
26 “And the vision of the evenings and mornings
Which was told is true;
Therefore seal up the vision,
For it refers to many days in the future.” (Dan. 8:26)
24 “Seventy weeks are determined
For your people and for your holy city,
To finish the transgression,
To make an end of sins,
To make reconciliation for iniquity,
To bring in everlasting righteousness,
To seal up vision and prophecy,
And to anoint the Most Holy. (Dan. 9:24)
4 “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book
until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge
shall increase.” (Dan. 12:4)
9 And he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed
up and sealed till the time of the end (Dan. 12:9)
10Many shall be purified…and refined, but the wicked shall
do wickedly… (Dan. 12:10)
4”Come, let us build…a tower whose top is in the heavens…”6The
LORD said, “Indeed the people are one…now nothing that
they propose to do will be withheld from them…
(Gen. 11:4-6)
III. THE BREVITY OF THE GREAT TRIBULATION (12:5-7)
26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:
“The Deliverer will come out of Zion,
And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; (Rom. 11:26)
5Then I, Daniel, looked and there stood two others, one on this
riverbank and the other on that riverbank. 6And one said to the
man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How
long shall the fulfillment of these wonders be?”7Then I heard
the man…who was above the waters of the river, when he held
up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him
who lives forever, that it shall be for a time, times, and half
a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely
shattered, all these things shall be finished. (Dan. 12:5-7)
25…[the Antichrist] shall persecute the saints of
the Most High…the saints shall be given into his hand for
a time and times and half a time. (Dan. 7:25)
15 “One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any
iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three
witnesses the matter shall be established. (Deut. 19:15)
28 Gather to me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers,
that I may speak these words in their hearing and call heaven and
earth to witness against them. (Deut. 31:28)
1This will be the third time I am coming to you. “By the
mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.”
(2 Cor. 13:1)
Completely shattering:
10 Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked
shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but
the wise shall understand. (Dan. 12:10)
27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not
having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be
holy and without blemish. (Eph. 5:27)
7 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage
of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.”
(Rev. 19:7)
“A time, times, and half a time” is defined
by John as 42 months, and 1260 days
2 But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not
measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will
tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months. (Rev.
11:2)
6 Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place
prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two
hundred and sixty days.
14 But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she
might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished
for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent.
(Rev. 12:6, 14)
5 And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies,
and he was given authority to [c]continue for forty-two months.
(Rev. 13:5)
Final 3½ years, or the second half of the 70th week
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.” (Dan. 9.27)
IV. DANIEL’S QUESTION (12:8-10)
8Although I heard, I did not understand. Then I said, “My
lord, what shall be the end [purpose] of these things?” 9And
he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed up
and sealed till the time of the end. 10Many shall be purified, made
white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of
the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand. (Dan.
12:8-10)
Sealed up:
26 “And the vision of the evenings and mornings
Which was told is true;
Therefore seal up the vision,
For it refers to many days in the future.” (Dan. 8:26)
V. MANY PURIFIED (12:10)
10Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked
shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but
the wise shall understand. (Dan. 12:10)
Many:
7 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage
of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.”
(Rev. 19:7)
The faith of God’s people will be tested as they
take a stand in the face of evil and martyrdom.
33And those of the people who understand shall instruct many; yet
for many days they shall fall by sword and flame…35And some
of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify them,
and make them white, until the time of the end; because it is still
for the appointed time. (Dan. 11:33-35)
VI. THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION WILL CONTINUE FOR 1,290
DAYS (12:11)
11From the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the
abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand
two hundred and ninety days [1,290 days]. 12Blessed is
he who waits, and comes to the one thousand three hundred and thirty-five
days. [1,335 days]. (Dan 12:11-12)
Jesus prophesied that the Great Tribulation will begin
with the abomination of desolation
25 He shall speak pompous words against the Most High,
Shall persecute the saints of the Most High,
And shall intend to change times and law.
Then the saints shall be given into his hand
For a time and times and half a time. (Dan. 7:25)
7 Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters
of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to
heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for
a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people
has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished.
(Dan. 12:7)
(Rev. 12:6, 14)
5 And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies,
and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. (Rev.
13:5)
15”Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’
spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place”…21For
then there will be great tribulation… (Mt 24:15-21)
3½ years: 42 months
2 But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not
measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will
tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months. (Rev.
11:2)
5 And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies,
and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. (Rev.
13:5)
1260 days
3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy
one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”
(Rev. 11:3)
6 Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place
prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two
hundred and sixty days. (Rev. 12:6)
Time, times, and half a time
14 But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she
might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished
for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent.
(Rev. 12:14)
(Dan. 12:7)
Middle of the week
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.” (Dan. 9:27)
Provision:
6The woman [Israel] fled into the wilderness, where she
has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one
thousand two hundred and sixty days [1,260 days]…where
she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the
presence of the serpent. (Rev. 12:6; 14)
Prophecy: The two witnesses will prophesy for
exactly 1,260 days
3I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy
one thousand two hundred and sixty days [1,260 days], clothed
in sackcloth.” (Rev 11:3)
Persecution: The Antichrist will war against the saints
25The saints shall be given into his hand for a time and times
and half a time. (Dan. 7:25)
5And he was given a mouth speaking…blasphemies, and he was
given authority to continue for forty-two months…7It was granted
to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority
was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation. (Rev.
13:5-7)
Dominate Jerusalem for exactly 1,260 days.
2And they will tread the holy city [Jerusalem] underfoot for forty-two
months. (Rev. 11:2)
7it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power
of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things
shall be finished. (Dan. 12:7)
The Church is raptured at the seventh trumpet
15 Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in
heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the
kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever
and ever!” (Rev. 11:15)
1Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels,
“Go and pour out the bowls of the wrath of God on the earth.”
First Bowl: Loathsome Sores
2 So the first went and poured out his bowl upon the earth, and
a foul and loathsome sore came upon the men who had the mark of
the beast and those who worshiped his image.
Second Bowl: The Sea Turns to Blood
3 Then the second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it
became blood as of a dead man; and every living creature in the
sea died.
Third Bowl: The Waters Turn to Blood
4 Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs
of water, and they became blood. 5 And I heard the angel of the
waters saying:
“You are righteous, O Lord,
The One who is and who was and who is to be,
Because You have judged these things.
6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets,
And You have given them blood to drink.
For it is their just due.”
7 And I heard another from the altar saying, “Even so, Lord
God Almighty, true and righteous are Your judgments.”
Fourth Bowl: Men Are Scorched
8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power
was given to him to scorch men with fire. 9 And men were scorched
with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power
over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.
Fifth Bowl: Darkness and Pain
10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the
beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed
their tongues because of the pain. 11 They blasphemed the God of
heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent
of their deeds.
Sixth Bowl: Euphrates Dried Up
12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river
Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings
from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits
like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth
of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out
to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them
to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
15 “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches,
and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”
16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew,
Armageddon.
Seventh Bowl: The Earth Utterly Shaken
17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and
a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne,
saying, “It is done!” 18 And there were noises and thunderings
and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty
and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth.
19 Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities
of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God,
to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath.
20 Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about
the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague
of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great. (Rev.
16:1-21)
The Beast and His Armies Defeated
17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a
loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven,
“Come and gather together for the supper of the great God,
18 that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the
flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on
them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and
great.”
19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies,
gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and
against His army. 20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the
false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived
those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped
his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning
with brimstone. 21 And the rest were killed with the sword which
proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the
birds were filled with their flesh. ( Rev. 19:17-21)
VII. THE BLESSING ON THOSE WHO COME TO THE 1,335 DAYS (12:12)
12Blessed is he who waits, and comes to the one thousand three
hundred and thirty-five days. (Dan. 12:12)
Jesus will remove evil leaders and replace them with the
saints who reign with Him
27 Then the kingdom and dominion,
And the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven,
Shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High.
His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
And all dominions shall serve and obey Him.’ (Dan.
7:27)
Waiting: Ezekiel prophesied of the purging of all rebels
out of Israel at the beginning of the Millennium
God Will Restore Israel
33 “As I live,” says the Lord GOD, “surely with
a mighty hand, with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out,
I will rule over you. 34 I will bring you out from the peoples and
gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a
mighty hand, with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out.
35 And I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and
there I will plead My case with you face to face. 36 Just as I pleaded
My case with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt,
so I will plead My case with you,” says the Lord GOD.
37 “I will make you pass under the rod, and I will bring
you into the bond of the covenant; 38 I will purge the rebels from
among you, and those who transgress against Me; I will bring them
out of the country where they dwell, but they shall not enter the
land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD. (Ezek.
20:33-38)
3 And it shall come to pass that he who is left in Zion and remains
in Jerusalem will be called holy—everyone who is recorded
among the living in Jerusalem. 4 When the Lord has washed away the
filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged the blood of Jerusalem
from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning,
(Isa. 4:3-4)
1“Behold, I send My messenger,
And he will prepare the way before Me.
And the Lord, whom you seek,
Will suddenly come to His temple,
Even the Messenger of the covenant,
In whom you delight.
Behold, He is coming,”
Says the LORD of hosts.
2 “But who can endure the day of His coming?
And who can stand when He appears?
For He is like a refiner’s fire
And like launderers’ soap.
3 He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver;
He will purify the sons of Levi,
And [a]purge them as gold and silver,
That they may offer to the LORD
An offering in righteousness.
4 “Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem
Will be pleasant to the LORD,
As in the days of old,
As in former years.
5 And I will come near you for judgment;
I will be a swift witness
Against sorcerers,
Against adulterers,
Against perjurers,
Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans,
And against those who turn away an alien—
Because they do not fear Me,”
Says the LORD of hosts.
6 “For I am the LORD, I do not change;
Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob. (Mal. 3:1-6)
The Gentiles will be judged according to their treatment
of the Jewish people.
40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly,
I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these
My brethren, you did it to Me.’ (Mt. 25:40)
These new Gentile believers will be told:
"Come, you who are blessed of my Father and inherit the kingdom”
(Mt. 25:34).
VIII. PERSONAL ENCOURAGEMENT TO DANIEL (12:13)
13But you, go your way till the end; for you shall rest, and will
arise to your inheritance at the end of the days. (Dan.
12:13)
2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake,
Some to everlasting life,
Some to shame and everlasting contempt. (Dan. 12:2)
