Session#11: The Tribulation and Triumph of the Kingdom
Session 11The Tribulation and Triumph of the Kingdom (Dan.
12)
I. INTRODUCTION AND OUTLINE OF DANIEL 12
The victory of God’s people over the Antichrist
1“At that time Michael shall stand up,
The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people;
And there shall be a time of trouble,
Such as never was since there was a nation,
Even to that time.
And at that time your people shall be delivered,
Every one who is found written in the book.
2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake,
Some to everlasting life,
Some to shame and everlasting contempt.
3 Those who are wise shall shine
Like the brightness of the firmament,
And those who turn many to righteousness
Like the stars forever and ever. (Dan. 12:1-3)
Details about the Great Tribulation
4 “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book
until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge
shall increase.”
5 Then I, Daniel, looked; and there stood two others, one on this
riverbank and the other on that riverbank. 6 And one said to the
man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How
long shall the fulfillment of these wonders be?”
7 Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters
of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to
heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for
a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people
has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished.
8 Although I heard, I did not understand. Then I said, “My
lord, what shall be the end of these things?” 9 And he said,
“Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed up and sealed
till the time of the end. 10 Many shall be purified, made white,
and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked
shall understand, but the wise shall understand.
11 “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away,
and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one
thousand two hundred and ninety days. 12 Blessed is he who waits,
and comes to the one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days.
13 “But you, go your way till the end; for you shall rest,
and will arise to your inheritance at the end of the days.”
(Dan. 12:4-13)
Jesus warned the Church more about deception in the end
times than tribulation
4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no
one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I
am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.
11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.
24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great
signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. (Mt.
24:4-5, 11, 24)
5 And Jesus, answering them, began to say: “Take heed that
no one deceives you. 6 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I
am He,’ and will deceive many.
22 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs
and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. (Mk.
13:5-6, 22)
8 And He said: “Take heed that you not be deceived. For many
will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The
time has drawn near.’ Therefore do not go after them. (Lk.
21:8)
3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come
unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed,
the son of perdition,(Antichrist) (2 Thes. 2:3)
1Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart
from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of
demons, (1 Tim. 4:1)
13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving
and being deceived. (2 Tim. 3:13)
Jesus spoke of people being overcome with fear
25“And there will be…on the earth distress of nations,
with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26men’s hearts
failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which
are coming on the earth…27Then they will see the Son of Man
coming…with power. (Lk. 21:25-27)
II. THE CONTEXT: THE ANTICHRIST
36“The king shall…shall prosper till the wrath has
been accomplished…”45“He shall plant the tents
of his palace between the seas [Mediterranean Sea and Dead Sea]
and the glorious holy mountain [Jerusalem] yet, he
shall come to his end, and no one will help him.” (Dan.
11:36, 45)
The Antichrist shall come to an end:
8Then the lawless one [Antichrist] will be revealed, whom
the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with
the brightness of His coming. (2 Thes. 2:8)
III. THE VICTORY OF GOD’S PEOPLE OVER THE ANTICHRIST
(DAN. 12:1-2)
45“He [the Antichrist] shall plant the tents of
his palace…[near] the holy mountain [Jerusalem]
yet, he shall come to his end… 12:1“At that time Michael
shall stand up, the great prince who stands watch over the sons
of your people [Israel]; and there shall be a time of trouble
[the Great Tribulation], such as never was since there was a nation
even to that time. And at that time your people [Israel] shall
be delivered…2Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth
shall awake [resurrection], some to everlasting life, some
to shame and everlasting contempt.” (Dan. 11:45-12:2)
Great Tribulation: .
15“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’
spoken of by Daniel the prophet…21For then there will be great
tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world
until this time, no, nor ever shall be.” (Mt. 24:15-21)
The Abomination of Desolation:
As described by Daniel
13 Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said
to that certain one who was speaking, “How long will the vision
be, concerning the daily sacrifices and the transgression of desolation,
the giving of both the sanctuary and the host to be trampled underfoot?”
(Dan. 8:13)
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.” (Dan. 9:27)
31 And forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the
sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices,
and place there the abomination of desolation. (Dan. 11:31)
11 “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away,
and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one
thousand two hundred and ninety days. (Dan. 12:11)
As described by Paul
3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come
unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed,
the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all
that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God
in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. (2
Thes. 2:3-4)
As described by John
11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he
had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. 12 And he exercises
all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes
the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast,
whose deadly wound was healed. 13 He performs great signs, so that
he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight
of men. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those
signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling
those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was
wounded by the sword and lived. 15 He was granted power to give
breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should
both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the
beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich
and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand
or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except
one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of
his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number
of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.
(Rev. 13:11-18)
The Great Tribulation
14He said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the
great tribulation…”
(Rev. 7:14)
Michael shall stand up:
9 Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when
he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him
a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
(Jude 9)
12 Then he said to me, “Do not fear, Daniel, for from the
first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself
before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because
of your words. 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood
me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes,
came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings
of Persia. 14 Now I have come to make you understand what will happen
to your people in the latter days, for the vision refers to many
days yet to come.” (Dan. 10:12-14)
Michael and his angels will cast Satan and his demons out
of heaven
7And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with
the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8but they did
not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer.
9So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the
Devil and Satan…he was cast to the earth, and his angels were
cast out with him…12Woe to the inhabitants of the earth…
The devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows
that he has a short time.” (Rev. 12:7-12)
2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world,
according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who
now works in the sons of disobedience, (Eph. 2:2)
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities,
against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,
against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
(Eph. 6:12)
Your people shall be delivered:
13“One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds…
14To Him was given dominion…and a kingdom…27Thekingdom…shall
be given to…the saints of the Most High.” (Dan.
7:13-14, 27)
2I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; the
city shall be taken…and the women ravished. Half of the city
shall go into captivity, but the remnant of the people shall not
be cut off from the city. 3Then the LORD will go forth and fight
against those nations. (Zech. 14:2-3)
IV. THE RESURRECTION (DAN. 12:2)
2Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake [resurrection],
some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt.
3Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament,
and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever.”
(Dan. 12:2-3)
29 So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you,
there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father
or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s,
30 who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses
and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with
persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life. 31 But
many who are first will be last, and the last first.” (Mk.
10:29-30)
Shame:
9…punished with everlasting destruction from the presence
of the Lord… (2 Thes. 1:9)
28Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who
are in the graves will hear His voice29and come forth—those
who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have
done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. (Jn. 5:28-29)
Revelation 20 teaches two resurrections occurring at different
times.
4I saw thrones, and they [saints, Rev. 19:14] sat on them,
and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those
who had been beheaded…who had not worshiped the beast…and
they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5But the
rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were
finished. This is the first resurrection. (Rev. 20:4-5)
Timing of the last trumpet corresponds with the resurrection,
the rapture and rewards.
31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet,
and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from
one end of heaven to the other. (Mt. 24:31)
52…in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.
For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible,
and we shall be changed. (1 Cor. 15:52)
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout,
with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And
the dead in Christ will rise first. (1 Thes. 4:16)
7 but in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he
is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared
to His servants the prophets. (Rev. 10:7)
15The seventh angel sounded…loud voices in heaven, saying,
“The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our
Lord…”18Your wrath has come, and the time of the dead,
that they should be judged, and that You should reward Your servants…”
(Rev. 11:15-18)
16TheLord Himself will descend…with the trumpet of God. And
the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive…shall
be caught up [raptured]…to meet the Lord. (1
Thes. 4:16-17)
13 So it shall be in that day:
The great trumpet will be blown;
They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria,
And they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt,
And shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem. (Isa.
27:13)
14 Then the LORD will be seen over them,
And His arrow will go forth like lightning.
The Lord GOD will blow the trumpet,
And go with whirlwinds from the south. (Zech. 9:14)
3“Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the
firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars
forever.” (Dan. 12:2-3)
Jesus emphasized God’s promise
43“Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the
kingdom of their Father.” (Mt. 13:43)
41…for one star differs from another star in glory. 42So
also is the resurrection of the dead. (1 Cor. 15:41–42)
19Whoever…breaks one of the least of these commandments,
and teaches men so, shall be called least…but whoever does
and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom.
(Mt. 5:19)
