Overview of the Signs of the Times
INTRODUCTION
32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its
twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is
near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it
is near, right at the door.34 Truly I tell you, this generation
will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass
away. (Mt. 24:32 - 35)
In Scripture, a generation ranges from 40 to 70 years.
The Lord’s anger burned against Israel and he made them wander
in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those
who had done evil in his sight was gone. (Num. 32:13)
Our days may come to seventy years or eighty, if our strength endures;
(Ps. 90:10)
1.THREE CATEGORIES OF SIGNS
11“There will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.”
(Lk. 21:11)
2. SIGN EVENTS AND TRENDS RELATED TO ISRAEL
A. Resettlement of Israel:
4After many days you will be called to arms. In future years you
will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were
gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had
long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations,
and now all of them live in safety. (Ezek. 38:8)
2 I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of
Jehoshaphat.
There I will put them on trialfor what they did to my inheritance,
my people Israel,
because they scattered my people among the nations and divided up
my land.
12 “Let the nations be roused; let them advance into the
Valley of Jehoshaphat,
for there I will sit to judge all the nations on every side. (Joel
3:2, 12)
3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered
against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the
nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves. (Zech.
12:3)
2 I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it;
the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped.
Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people
will not be taken from the city. (Zech. 14:2)
4 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to
all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until
the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. (Lk. 21:24)
8“In the latter years you [Antichrist] will come
into the land of those [Israel]…gathered from many
people [nations] on the mountains of Israel, which had long been
desolate.” (Ezek. 38:8)
6“In that day…Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in
her own place—Jerusalem.” (Zech. 12:6)
B. The rebuilt temple in Jerusalem.
15 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the
abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the
prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— (Mt.
24:15)
14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’
standing where it does not belong—let the reader understand—then
let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. (Mk. 13:14)
4 He (Antichrist) will oppose and will exalt himself over
everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he (Antichrist)
sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself
to be God. (2 Thes. 2:4)
1 I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, “Go
and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers.
2 But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has
been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for
42 months. (Rev. 11:1-2)
The Beast out of the Earth
11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two
horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercised all
the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth
and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had
been healed. 13 And it performed great signs, even causing fire
to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people.
14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf
of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It
ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded
by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast was given power
to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image
could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be
killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and
poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or
on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless
they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number
of its name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate
the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number
is 666. (Rev 13:11-18)
26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will
be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who
will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will
come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations
have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one
‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he
will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he
will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end
that is decreed is poured out on him.” (Dan. 9:26-27)
31 “His (Antichrist) armed forces will rise up to desecrate
the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they
(The Antichrist System) will set up the abomination that
causes desolation. (Dan. 11:31)
11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and
the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be
1,290 days. 12 Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the
end of the 1,335 days. (Dan. 12:11-12)
C. Salvation of Israel:
39“You shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed
is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’” (Mt.
23:39)
3. SIGN TRENDS RELATED TO THE NATIONS
A. Global government:
41 Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked
clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet
it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw
iron mixed with clay. 42 As the toes were partly iron and partly
clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle.
(Dan. 2:41-42)
7 “After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there
before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and
very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured
its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different
from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.
20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about
the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the
horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes
and a mouth that spoke boastfully.
24 The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom.
After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones;
he will subdue three kings. (Dan 7:7, 20, 24)
3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon
with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. (Rev.12:3)
1 The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming
out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns
on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. (Rev.
13:1)
3 Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness.
There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered
with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns.
7 Then the angel said to me: “Why are you astonished? I will
explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides,
which has the seven heads and ten horns.
12 “The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet
received a kingdom, but who for one hour will receive authority
as kings along with the beast. 13 They have one purpose and will
give their power and authority to the beast.
16 The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute.
They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her
flesh and burn her with fire. (Rev. 17:3, 7, 12-13, 16)
C. Knowledge and travel
4“Seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run
to and fro [unprecedented travel], and knowledge shall increase
[information age].” (Dan. 12:4)
D. Internet technology
16He causes all…to receive a mark on their right hand or
on their foreheads, 17and that no one may buy or sell except one
who has the mark or the name of the beast. (Rev. 13:16-17)
4. POSITIVE SIGN TRENDS
A. Gospel preached to all nations:
14“This gospel…will be preached…to all the nations
[ethnos] and then the end will come.” (Mt. 24:14)
B. Bridal identity:
17The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come!” (Rev.
22:17)
C. Outpouring of the Spirit:
17 “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my
Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your
young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit
in those days, and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth
below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before
the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
(Acts 2:17-21)
D. Global prayer and worship movement:
1Sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth…9Worship
the Lord…tremble before Him, all the earth…13For He
is coming to judge the earth. (Ps. 96:1-13)
1Sing to the Lord a new song…3All the ends of the earth have
seen the salvation of our God. 4Shout joyfully to the Lord, all
the earth; break forth in song…and sing praises. (Ps.
98:1-4)
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you
be secure. (Ps. 122:6)
20 It will be a sign and witness to the Lord Almighty in the land
of Egypt. (Africa) When they cry out to the Lord because
of their oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and
he will rescue them. 21 So the Lord will make himself known to the
Egyptians, (Africans) and in that day they will acknowledge the
Lord. They will worship with sacrifices and grain offerings; they
will make vows to the Lord and keep them.
22 The Lord will strike Egypt (Africa) with a plague; he
will strike them and heal them. They will turn to the Lord, and
he will respond to their pleas and heal them. (Isa. 19:20-22)
14 They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they
acclaim the Lord’s majesty.
15 Therefore in the east give glory to the Lord; exalt the name
of the Lord, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea.
16 From the ends of the earth we hear singing: “Glory to the
Righteous One.” (Isa. 24:14-16)
13 And in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing
in Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship
the Lord on the holy mountain in Jerusalem. (Isa. 27:13)
10 Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the ends of the
earth,
you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands,
and all who live in them.
11 Let the wilderness and its towns raise their voices; let the
settlements where Kedar lives rejoice.
Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them shout from the mountaintops.
12 Let them give glory to the Lord and proclaim his praise in the
islands.
13 The Lord will march out like a champion, like a warrior he will
stir up his zeal;
with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over
his enemies.
14 “For a long time I have kept silent, I have been quiet
and held myself back.
But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant.
15 I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their
vegetation;
I will turn rivers into islands and dry up the pools. (Isa.
42: 10 – 15)
11 Those the Lord has rescued will return.
They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their
heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will
flee away. (Isa. 51:11)
8 Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices; together they shout
for joy.
When the Lord returns to Zion, they will see it with their own eyes.
(Isa 52:8)
6 I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never
be silent day or night.
You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest,
7 and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her
the praise of the earth. (Isa. 62: 6-7)
1 Gather together, gather yourselves together, you shameful nation,
2 before the decree takes effect and that day passes like windblown
chaff,
before the Lord’s fierce anger comes upon you,
before the day of the Lord’s wrath comes upon you.
(Zeph. 2: 1-2)
10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants
of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look
on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as
one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one
grieves for a firstborn son. (Zech. 12:10)
13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My
house will be called a house of prayer,’ (Mt.
21:13a)
8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four
elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were
holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s
people. (Rev. 5:8)
3 Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the
altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all
God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne.
4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s
people, went up before God from the angel’s hand. (Rev.
8:3-4)
7“Shall God not avenge [bring justice to] His own
elect who cry out day and night to Him…? 8When the Son of
Man comes, will He really find faith [agreement] on the
earth?”
(Lk.18:7-8)
The International House of Prayer (IHOP):
8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered
with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never
stop saying:
“‘Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,’
who was, and is, and is to come.”
(Rev. 4:8)
2 And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters
and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that
of harpists playing their harps. (Rev.14:2)
6I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they shall never
hold their peace [be silent,] day or night. You who make
mention of the LORD, do not keep silent, 7and give Him no rest till
He…makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth [at Jesus’
return]. (Isa. 62:6-7)
5. THE GREAT END-TIME CONFLICT:
The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one
who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come;
and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.
(Rev. 22:17)
Satan will raise up a worship (and prayer) movement
It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf,
and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast…
(Rev. 13:12a)
8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all
whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life,
the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world. (Rev.
13:8)
All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship
me." (Matt. 4:8-9)
"…You shall… worship the gold image whoever does
not fall down and worship shall be cast into…fiery furnace."
(Dan. 3:1-6)
…men who understood the times and knew what Israel should
do.
(1 Chronicles 12:32)
5. NEGATIVE SPIRITUAL SIGNS/TRENDS IN THE CHURCH AND SOCIETY
A. Deception
4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5
For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’
and will deceive many. (Mt. 24: 4-5)
B. Apostasy
10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray
and hate each other, (Mt. 24:10)
C. Violence - Ethnic conflict
7 Nation will rise against nation… (Mt. 24:7a)
D. Kingdom against kingdom
7 and kingdom against kingdom…. (Mt. 24:7b)
E. Famines, Pestilence
7 There will be famines… (Mt. 24:7c)
F. Earthquakes
7 and earthquakes in various places. (Mt. 24:7d)
G. Hatred of believers
9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put
to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me (Mt.
24:9)
H. Relational breakdown in society
At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray
and hate each other (Mt. 24:10)
I.Lawlessness
12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will
grow cold, (Mt. 24:12)
J. Fearful sights
11 fearful events…. (Lk. 21:11b)
K. Disturbances in the sea
25 “On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity
at the roaring and tossing of the sea. (Lk. 21:25b)
L. Great signs in the sky
and great signs from heaven. (Lk. 21:11c)
A. DECEPTION BY FALSE CHRISTS/PROPHETS
4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5
For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’
and will deceive many.” (Mt. 24: 4-5)
B. APOSTASY
3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine,
but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears,
they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4and they will turn their
ears away from the truth…5But you be watchful in all things
(2 Tim. 4:3-5)
10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray
and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and
deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the
love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the
end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached
in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end
will come. (Mt. 24:10-13)
6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control
over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed
by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to
come to a knowledge of the truth. (2 Tim. 3:1-7)
2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way
of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit
you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging
over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping. (2
Pet. 2:1-3)
1Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart
from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of
demons. (1 Tim. 4:1)
3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will
not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is
revealed, the man doomed to destruction. (2 Thes. 2:3)
C. THE DAYS OF NOAH (VIOLENCE)
26“As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the
days of the Son of Man…28Likewise as it was also in the days
of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold.” (Lk.
17:26-28)
12God looked upon the earth…it was corrupt; for all flesh
had corrupted their way on the earth. 13God said to Noah, “The
end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with
violence.” (Gen. 6:12-13)
E. FAMINE, PESTILENCE
There will be famines… (Mt. 24: 7a)
F. EARTHQUAKE
And earthquakes in various places. (Mt. 24: 7b)
G. HATRED OF BELIEVERS:
9“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you,
and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.”
(Mt. 24:9)
Martyrdom:
33“They shall fall by sword…35Some of those of understanding
shall fall [martyrdom], to refine them, purify them, and make them
white, until the time of the end.” (Dan. 11:33-35)
H. BREAKDOWN OF THE FAMILY:
10“Then many will be offended, will betray one another, and
will hate one another.” (Mt. 24:10)
I. LAWLESSNESS WILL ABOUND
23 “In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become
completely wicked, a fierce-looking king, a master of intrigue,
will arise. (Dan. 8:23).
12“Because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will
grow cold.” (Mt. 24:12)
The chief sins embraced in that hour will be murder, sorcery, immorality,
and theft (Rev. 9:21)
Murder:
13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who
are they, and where did they come from?” 14 I answered, “Sir,
you know.” And he said, “These are they who have come
out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made
them white in the blood of the Lamb. (Rev. 7:13-14)
21 Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their
sexual immorality or their thefts. (Rev. 9:21)
7 It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people
and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe,
people, language and nation.
10 “If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they
will go.
If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword they will
be killed.”
This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of
God’s people. (Rev.13:7, 10)
6 for they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets,
and you have given them blood to drink as they deserve.”
(Rev. 16:6)
6 I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s
holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus. (Rev.
17:6a)
24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy
people,
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.” (Rev.
18:24)
21 As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people
and defeating them, (Dan. 7:21)
12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his
child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put
to death. 13 Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who
stands firm to the end will be saved. (Mk. 13:12-13)
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2
People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful,
proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal,
not lovers of the good, (2 Tim. 3:1-3)
Sorceries:
4 People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to
the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who
is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?”
8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all
whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life,
the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.
12 It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf,
and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast,
whose fatal wound had been healed. 13 And it performed great signs,
even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full
view of the people. 14 Because of the signs it was given power to
perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants
of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the
beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second
beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast,
so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship
the image to be killed. (Rev. 13:4, 8, 12-15)
11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever.
There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast
and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”
(Rev. 14:11)
Sexual Immorality
20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still
did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping
demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols
that cannot see or hear or walk. 21 Nor did they repent of their
murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts.
(Rev. 9:20-21)
2 With her the kings of the earth committed adultery, and the inhabitants
of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries.”
(Rev. 17:2)
D. Theft:
1. Slavery:
11“And the merchants of the earth will weep…for no
one buys their merchandise anymore: 12merchandise of gold…13cattle
and sheep…and bodies and souls of men.” (Rev.
18:11-13)
2. Human Trafficking:
3“They have…given a boy as payment for a harlot, and
sold a girl for wine.” (Joel 3:3)
J. FEARFUL SIGNS
11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in
various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
(Lk. 21:11)
K. DISTURBANCES IN THE SEA
“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth,
nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing
of the sea.” (Luke 21: 25)
L. SIGNS IN THE SKY
11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in
various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
(Luke 21:11)
20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before
the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. (Acts
2: 20)
THE MOVE TOWARD A ONE-WORLD RELIGION – HARLOT OF
BABYLON
3 Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness.
There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered
with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. 7 Then
the angel said to me: “Why are you astonished? I will explain
to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides, which
has the seven heads and ten horns. (Rev. 17:3, 7)
15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image
of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all
who refused to worship the image to be killed. (Rev. 13:4,
8, 15)
GOD’S PROMISE - GOD’S JUDGEMENT
"Thus says the Lord GOD: "When I have gathered the house
of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and am
hallowed in them in the sight of the Gentiles,
“then they will dwell in their own land which I gave to My
servant Jacob. And they will dwell safely there, build houses, and
plant vineyards;"
They (Israel) will dwell securely, when I execute judgments
on all those around them who despise them. Then they shall know
that I am the LORD their God.“ (Isaiah 28:25-26)
JUDGEMENT ON SOUTHERN JORDAN
Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “I will stretch
out my hand against Edom (Southern Jordan) and kill its men and
their animals.” (Ezekiel 25 : 13a)
JUDGEMENT ON NORTHERN JORDAN
“But the days are coming,” declares the LORD, "when
I will sound the battle cry against Rabbah of the Ammonites”
[Ammon, Northern Jordan]; (Jeremiah 49:2)
JUDGEMENT ON CENTRAL JORDAN
"Therefore, as I live," Says the LORD of hosts, the God
