Session #6 - Abomination of Desolation - Bible Verse Hand Book
Abomination of Desolation: Primary Sign of the Tribulation
I. WHAT IS THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION?
15 When you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel
the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads,
let him understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee
to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down
to take anything out of his house. 18 Let him who is in the field
not go back…21 For there will be great tribulation, such as
has not been since the beginning of the world until this time…
(Mt. 24:15-21)
C. Paul described the abomination of desolation
3 For that Day (Rapture) will not come unless…the
man of sin (Antichrist) is revealed…4 who opposes
and exalts himself above all that is called (associated with)
God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the Temple of
God, showing himself that he is God. (2 Thes. 2:3-4)
II. THE COMING ABOMINATION: FOUR MAIN EVIL ACTIVITIES
A. The abomination begins when the Antichrist sits in the
Temple claiming to be God
7 He said: “Son of man, this is the place of my throne and
the place for the soles of my feet. This is where I will live among
the Israelites forever. The people of Israel will never again defile
my holy name—neither they nor their kings—by their prostitution
and the funeral offerings for their kings at their death. (Ezek.
43:7)
12 Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Here is
the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his
place and build the temple of the LORD. 13 It is he who will build
the temple of the LORD, and he will be clothed with majesty and
will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his
throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’ (Zech.
6:12-13)
B. Second, the False Prophet will tell people to make an
image
15 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the
abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the
prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— (Mt.
24:15)
14 And he (False Prophet) deceives those who dwell on the earth
by those signs…telling those who dwell on the earth to make
an image to the Beast (Antichrist). (Rev. 13:14)
C. Third, the False Prophet will tell the leaders in the
nations to make an image
20 The rest of mankind…did not repent of the works of their
hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver,
brass, stone, and wood… (Rev. 9:20)
D. Fourth, the False Prophet will cause all the nations
to worship the Antichrist as God
12 And he (False Prophet) exercises all the authority
of the first Beast (Antichrist)…and causes the earth
and those who dwell in it to worship the first Beast…15 He
was granted power to…cause as many as would not worship the
image of the Beast to be killed. (Rev. 13:12, 15)
8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him (Antichrist),
whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb
slain from the foundation of the world. (Rev. 13:8)
E. People will worship the Antichrist’s image itself.
9 If anyone worships the Beast (Antichrist) and his image…10
shall be tormented...
(Rev. 14:9)
III. THE DESOLATION OF THE NATIONS: 2 SOURCES OF DESTRUCTION
A. The consequences of the coming abominations will result
in great desolation
22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved
(physically saved from death) but for the elect's sake
those days will be shortened. (Mt. 24:22)
1The LORD makes the earth empty (of people)…3. The
land shall be entirely emptied…6. The inhabitants of the earth
are burned, and few men are left. (Isa. 24:1-6)
9 The day of the LORD comes…to lay the land desolate; He
will destroy its sinners from it...11 I will punish the world…12
I will make a mortal more rare than gold... (Isa. 13:9-12)
B. First, Jesus will destroy the people and places who
worship the Antichrist
8 Power was given to them over a fourth of the earth….
(Rev. 6:8)
15 The four angels…were released to kill a third of mankind.
(Rev. 9:15)
16 The LORD will judge all flesh; and the slain of the LORD shall
be many. (Isa 66:16)
33 The slain of the LORD shall be from one end of the earth even
to the other... (Jer 25:33)
C. Second, the Antichrist will use his unprecedented political,
military and economic power to seek to destroy those refuse to worship
him.
15 To cause as many as would not worship…the Beast to be
killed. (Rev. 13:12, 15)
3 The man of sin (Antichrist) is revealed, the son of
perdition (destruction) (2 Thes. 2:3)
27 On the wing of abominations shall be one (Antichrist) who
makes desolate…
(Dan. 9:27)
IV. ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION: THE IMAGE AND THE MARK OF
THE BEAST
A. The image of the Beast a prophetic signs in the End-Times.
14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf
of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It
ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded
by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast was given power
to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image
could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be
killed. (Rev. 13:14 – 15)
9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If
anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on
their forehead or on their hand,
11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever.
There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast
and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”
(Rev. 14:9, 11)
2 And I saw what looked like a sea of glass glowing with fire and,
standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the
beast and its image and over the number of its name. (Rev.
15:2a)
2 The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land, and
ugly, festering sores broke out on the people who had the mark of
the beast and worshiped its image. (Rev. 16:2)
20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who
had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had deluded
those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.
The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning
sulfur. (Rev. 19:20)
4 I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority
to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because
of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They[a]
had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its
mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned
with Christ a thousand years. (Rev.20:4)
B. The Abomination of Desolation will be convincing
9 The coming of the lawless one (Antichrist) is according
to the working of Satan, with all
power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception...
(2 Thes. 2:9-10)
24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great
signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
(Mt. 24:24)
C. The image of the Beast that breathes and talks and the
mark of the Beast
13 He (False Prophet) performs great signs, so that he
even makes fire come down from heaven…14 And he deceives those
who dwell on the earth by those signs…15 He was granted power
to give breath to the image of the Beast, that the image of the
Beast should speak… 16 He causes all…to receive a mark
on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may
buy or sell except one who has the mark… 18 His number is
666. (Rev.13:13-18)
D. The mark of the Beast
16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free
and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,
17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark,
which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. (Rev.
13:16-17).
G. A counterfeit to the End-Time worship and prophetic
movement.
17 It shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will
pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters
shall prophesy… (Acts 2:17)
V. THE END-TIME SATANIC COUNTERFEIT WORSHIP MOVEMENT
A. The Holy Spirit is raising up a End-Time prophetic worship
movement
8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four
elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were
holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s
people. (Rev. 5:8)
4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s
people, went up before God from the angel’s hand. (Rev.
8:4)
7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who
cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I
tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However,
when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
(Lk. 18:7-8)
6 I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem;
they will never be silent day or night.
You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest,
7 and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem
and makes her the praise of the earth. (Isa. 62:6-7)
10 Sing to the LORD a new song,
his praise from the ends of the earth,
you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it,
you islands, and all who live in them.
11 Let the wilderness and its towns raise their voices;
let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice.
Let the people of Sela sing for joy;
let them shout from the mountaintops.
12 Let them give glory to the LORD
and proclaim his praise in the islands.
13 The LORD will march out like a champion,
like a warrior he will stir up his zeal;
with a shout he will raise the battle cry
and will triumph over his enemies. (Isa. 42:10-13)
8 Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices;
together they shout for joy.
When the LORD returns to Zion,
they will see it with their own eyes. (Isa. 52:8)
12 “Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to
me with all your heart,
with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
13 Rend your heart and not your garments.
Return to the LORD your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in love,
and he relents from sending calamity.
14 Who knows? He may turn and relent
and leave behind a blessing— grain offerings and drink offerings
for the LORD your God.
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast,
call a sacred assembly.
16 Gather the people, consecrate the assembly;
bring together the elders, gather the children,
those nursing at the breast.
Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber.
17 Let the priests, who minister before the LORD,
weep between the portico and the altar.
Let them say, “Spare your people, LORD.
Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, a byword among
the nations.
Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”
32 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance,
as the LORD has said, even among the survivors
whom the LORD calls. (Joel 2:12-17, 32)
17 He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; he will not
despise their plea.
18 Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not
yet created may praise the LORD:
19 “The LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high, from
heaven he viewed the earth,
20 to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned
to death.” (Ps. 102:17-20)
10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants
of Jerusalem a spirit[a] of grace and supplication. They will look
on[b] me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him
as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as
one grieves for a firstborn son. (Zech. 12:10)
B. Hundreds of millions will accept the Antichrist’s
claims participating in Satan worship.
4 They worshiped the dragon (Satan) who gave authority
to the Beast (Antichrist); and they worshiped the Beast
saying, "Who is like the Beast?...” (Rev. 13:4)
8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him (Antichrist),
whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb
slain from the foundation of the world. (Rev. 13:8)
C. The very thing that Satan wanted from Jesus is what
he demands from the whole earth.
8 The devil…showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and
their glory. And he said to Him, "All these things I will give
You if You will fall down and worship me." (Matt. 4:8-9)
D.The Antichrist will demand to be worshipped
1 Nebuchadnezzar…made an image of gold, whose height was
sixty cubits (90 feet) and its width six cubits (9
feet)…4 Then a herald cried aloud, "…You shall…
worship the gold image…6 whoever does not fall down and worship
shall be cast into…fiery furnace”. (Dan. 3:1-6)
VI. UNDERSTANDING MORE ABOUT THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION
A. Scripture exhorts us to understand the vision
23 Therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision…
(Dan. 9:23)
25 Know therefore and understand… (Dan. 9:25)
B. We are exhorted “read and understand”
15 The abomination of desolation…whoever reads, let him understand…
(Mt. 24:15)
C. The Abomination of Desolation is directly referred to
by name
By Daniel
13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said
to him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled—the
vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes
desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot
of the LORD’s people?” (Dan. 8:13)
27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’
In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice
and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that
causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on
him (Dan. 9:27)
31 “His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple
fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set
up the abomination that causes desolation. 32 With flattery he will
corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who
know their God will firmly resist him. (Dan. 11:31-32)
11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and
the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be
1,290 days. 12 Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the
end of the 1,335 days. (Dan. 12:11-12)
By Jesus
15 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the
abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the
prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— (Matt.
24:15)
14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’
standing where it does not belong—let the reader understand—then
let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. (Mk. 13:14)
The Abomination of Desolation is described without using
the name
11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two
horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercised all
the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth
and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had
been healed. 13 And it performed great signs, even causing fire
to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people.
14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf
of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It
ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded
by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast was given power
to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image
could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be
killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and
poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or
on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless
they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number
of its name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate
the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[e] That
number is 666. (Rev. 13:11-18)
9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If
anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on
their forehead or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine
of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the
cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in
the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke
of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest
day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for
anyone who receives the mark of its name.” 12 This calls for
patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his
commands and remain faithful to Jesus. (Rev. 14:9-12)
3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will
not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness[a]
is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and
will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped,
so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself
to be God. (2 Thes. 2:3-4)
