Session 9 Israel: Delivered, Blessed, and Regathered (Zech. 9-10)
I. INTRODUCTION
A. 1 “Comfort, yes, comfort My people!”
Says your God.
2 “Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her,
That her warfare is ended,
That her iniquity is pardoned;
For she has received from the Lord 's hand
Double for all her sins.” (Isa. 40:1-2)
B. Both prophecies begin with burden, which is translated as oracle, or a heavy burden
1The burden [oracle] of the word of the LORD against the land of Hadrach. (Zech. 9:1)
12 The burden of the word of the Lord against Israel. Thus says the Lord , who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him: (Zech. 12:1)
E. In the second oracle the phrase “in that day” occurs many times, and indicates the end of the age
3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.
4 In that day,” says the Lord , “I will strike every horse with confusion, and its rider with madness; I will open My eyes on the house of Judah, and will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.
6 In that day I will make the governors of Judah like a firepan in the woodpile, and like a fiery torch in the sheaves; they shall devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left, but Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place—Jerusalem.
8 In that day the Lord will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them in that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the Angel of the Lord before them. 9 It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
11 In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. (Zech. 12:3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11)
1 “ In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.
2 “It shall be in that day,” says the Lord of hosts, “ that I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered. I will also cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land.
4 “And it shall be in that day that every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; they will not wear a robe of coarse hair to deceive. (Zech. 13:1, 2, 4)
1 Behold, the day of the Lord is coming,
And your spoil will be divided in your midst.
4 And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Which faces Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,
From east to west,
Making a very large valley;
Half of the mountain shall move toward the north
And half of it toward the south.
6 It shall come to pass in that day
That there will be no light;
The lights will diminish.
8 And in that day it shall be
That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem,
Half of them toward the eastern sea
And half of them toward the western sea;
In both summer and winter it shall occur.
9 And the Lord shall be King over all the earth.
In that day it shall be—
“The Lord is one,”
And His name one.
13 It shall come to pass in that day
That a great panic from the Lord will be among them.
Everyone will seize the hand of his neighbor,
And raise his hand against his neighbor's hand;
20 In that day “HOLINESS TO THE LORD” shall be engraved on the bells of the horses. The pots in the Lord 's house shall be like the bowls before the altar. 21 Yes, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holiness to the Lord of hosts. Everyone who sacrifices shall come and take them and cook in them. In that day there shall no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the Lord of hosts. (Zech. 14:1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 13, 20, 21)
II. ISRAEL WILL BE DELIVERED FROM THE NATIONS SURROUNDING HER (9:1-8)
A Judgment and salvation will come to the nations surrounding Israel
Zechariah specifies three cities in Syria (Hadrach, Damascus, and Hamath.)
The burden of the word of the Lord
Against the land of Hadrach,
And Damascus its resting place
(For the eyes of men
And all the tribes of Israel
Are on the Lord );
2 Also against Hamath, which borders on it. (Zech. 9:1-2a)
Two in Phoenicia (Tyre and Sidon.)
And against Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise.
3 For Tyre built herself a tower,
Heaped up silver like the dust,
And gold like the mire of the streets.
4 Behold, the Lord will cast her out;
He will destroy her power in the sea,
And she will be devoured by fire. (Zech. 9:2b-4)
Four cities in Philistia (Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and Ashdod.)
5 Ashkelon shall see it and fear;
Gaza also shall be very sorrowful;
And Ekron, for He dried up her expectation.
The king shall perish from Gaza,
And Ashkelon shall not be inhabited.
6 “A mixed race shall settle in Ashdod,
And I will cut off the pride of the Philistines.
7 I will take away the blood from his mouth,
And the abominations from between his teeth.
But he who remains, even he shall be for our God,
And shall be like a leader in Judah,
And Ekron like a Jebusite.
8 I will camp around My house
Because of the army,
Because of him who passes by and him who returns.
No more shall an oppressor pass through them,
For now I have seen with My eyes. (Zech. 9:5-8)
1 Zechariah 9:1-8 is a prototype of what the Lord will do to ungodly nations that oppress others. What He does reveals His nature.
He humbles their pride
(Zech. 9:6a See above )
Cleanses their sin
(Zech. 9:7a See above )
Offers them His salvation
(Zech. 9:7b See above )
Participation in His kingdom
(Zech. 9:7c See above
B Judgment came to Syria and Phoenicia
1The burden of the word of the LORD against the land of Hadrach, and Damascus its resting place (for the eyes of men and all the tribes of Israel are on the LORD); 2also against Hamath, which borders on it, and against Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise. 3For Tyre built herself a tower, heaped up silver like the dust, and gold like the mire of the streets. 4Behold, the LORD will cast her out; He will destroy her power in the sea. (Zech. 9:1-4)
Before the eyes of men and God
(Zech. 9:8 See above
C Judgment and salvation will come to Philistia
5Ashkelon shall see it and fear; Gaza also shall be very sorrowful; and Ekron…6A mixed race shall settle in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines. 7I will take away the blood from his mouth, and the abominations…But he who remains, even he shall be for our God, and shall be like a leader in Judah, and Ekron like a Jebusite . (Zech. 9:5-7)
2 Shall be for our God: Some of Israel's fiercest enemies joined them in worshiping the God of Israel. Some became like the devout Jebusites in David's day
18 Therefore, the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to David that David should go and erect an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. (1 Chr. 21:18)
D The Lord will camp around Israel with angels, especially in the end-time conflicts.
8I will camp around My house because of the army, because of him who passes by…No more shall an oppressor pass through them, for now I have seen with My eyes. (Zech. 9:8)
III. THE COMING OF ZION'S KING
A The Israelites in Zechariah's day were to rejoice because their King was surely coming
9“Rejoice greatly…O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey…10I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem; the battle bow shall be cut off. He shall speak peace to the nations; His dominion shall be…from the River to the ends of the earth. (Zech. 9:9-10)
B Daniel spoke of the Messiah as the Son of Man coming with the clouds to rule all nations.
13One like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven…14to Him was given dominion … (Dan. 7:13-14)
1 Verse 9 was fulfilled at Jesus' first coming by Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday
5 But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. (Mt. 25:5)
15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming,
Sitting on a donkey's colt.” (Jn 12:15)
Verse 10 will be fulfilled at Jesus' second coming
3 He is lowly:
29Learn from Me for I am gentle and lowly in heart [humble]. (Mt. 11:29)
Jesus showed us who He is in His core identity when He took a towel to wash dirty feet.
3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. (Jn. 13:3-5)
Only the meek will inherit the eternal leadership of the earth
5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. (Mt. 5:5)
6 Jesus will take over the nations only on the basis of humility
4In your majesty ride forth victoriously in behalf of truth, humility and righteousness. (Ps. 45:4)
C I will cut off the chariot: Jesus will cause all war to cease when He returns
4 He shall judge between the nations,
And rebuke many people;
They shall beat their swords into plowshares,
And their spears into pruning hooks;
Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
Neither shall they learn war anymore. (Isa. 2:4)
5 For every warrior's sandal from the noisy battle,
And garments rolled in blood,
Will be used for burning and fuel of fire.
6 For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. (Isa. 9:5-7)
D His dominion: All the kings of the earth will worship and obey Him in the Millennium
11 Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him; all nations shall serve Him. (Ps. 72:11)
15 So the nations shall fear the name of the Lord , and all the kings of the earth Your glory. (Ps. 102:15)
4 All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O Lord , when they hear the words of Your mouth. (Ps. 138:4)
11 Kings of the earth and all peoples; Princes and all judges of the earth; (Ps. 148:11)
11 For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down,
My name shall be great among the Gentiles;
In every place incense shall be offered to My name,
And a pure offering;
For My name shall be great among the nations,”
Says the Lord of hosts. (Mal. 1:11)
4 Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name?
For You alone are holy.
For all nations shall come and worship before You,
For Your judgments have been manifested.” (Rev. 15:4)
IV. THE KING COMES TO JERUSALEM: JESUS' GLORIOUS RETURN (9:11-17)
A When Jesus returns He will liberate, empower, defend, and save Israel
11“As for you also, because of the blood of your covenant, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12Return to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope…I will restore double to you. 13I have bent Judah, My bow, fitted the bow with Ephraim, and raised up your sons, O Zion, against your sons, O Greece, and made you like the sword of a mighty man.” (Zech. 9:11-13)
14 Then the Lord will be seen over them,
And His arrow will go forth like lightning.
The Lord God will blow the trumpet,
And go with whirlwinds from the south.
15 The Lord of hosts will defend them;
They shall devour and subdue with slingstones.
They shall drink and roar as if with wine;
They shall be filled with blood like basins,
Like the corners of the altar.
16 The Lord their God will save them in that day,
As the flock of His people.
For they shall be like the jewels of a crown,
Lifted like a banner over His land—
17 For how great is its goodness
And how great its beauty!
Grain shall make the young men thrive,
And new wine the young women. (Zech. 9:14-17)
He will destroy the Antichrist armies surrounding Jerusalem and liberate Jewish prisoners
2 “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem. 3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it. (Zech. 12:2-3)
2 For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (Zech. 14:2)
2 I will also gather all nations,
And bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
And I will enter into judgment with them there
On account of My people, My heritage Israel,
Whom they have scattered among the nations;
They have also divided up My land.
12 “Let the nations be wakened, and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
For there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. (Joel 3:2, 12)
He will empower the Israeli army as His agents for this before He returns
3 “My anger is kindled against the shepherds,
And I will punish the goat herds.
For the Lord of hosts will visit His flock,
The house of Judah,
And will make them as His royal horse in the battle.
4 From him comes the cornerstone,
From him the tent peg,
From him the battle bow,
From him every ruler together.
5 They shall be like mighty men,
Who tread down their enemies
In the mire of the streets in the battle.
They shall fight because the Lord is with them,
And the riders on horses shall be put to shame.
6 “I will strengthen the house of Judah,
And I will save the house of Joseph.
I will bring them back,
Because I have mercy on them.
They shall be as though I had not cast them aside;
For I am the Lord their God,
And I will hear them.
7 Those of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man,
And their heart shall rejoice as if with wine.
Yes, their children shall see it and be glad;
Their heart shall rejoice in the Lord . (Zech. 10:3-7)
5 And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my strength in the Lord of hosts, their God.' 6 In that day I will make the governors of Judah like a firepan in the woodpile, and like a fiery torch in the sheaves; they shall devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left, but Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place—Jerusalem.
7 “The Lord will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall not become greater than that of Judah. 8 In that day the Lord will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them in that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the Angel of the Lord before them. (Zech. 12:5-8)
1 I will set your prisoners free: The Lord will set prisoners free from the waterless pit, which is a dry well, like Joseph and Jeremiah were thrown into
24 Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it. (Gen. 37:24)
6 So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the king's son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire.
7 Now Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon. When the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin, 8 Ebed-Melech went out of the king's house and spoke to the king, saying: 9 “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon, and he is likely to die from hunger in the place where he is. For there is no more bread in the city.” (Jer. 38:6-9)
2 Prisoners of hope: “The hope” of Israel, to which Paul refers
6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers. (Acts 26:6)
20 For this reason therefore I have called for you, to see you and speak with you, because for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.” (Acts 28:20)
3 Blood of your covenant:
8 And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words.” (Exodus 24:8)
Jesus uses this phrase when speaking of His death
24“This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.”
(Mk. 14:24)
4 Restore double:
2 “Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her,
That her warfare is ended,
That her iniquity is pardoned;
For she has received from the Lord 's hand
Double for all her sins.” (Isa. 40:2)
19 These two things have come to you;
Who will be sorry for you?—
Desolation and destruction, famine and sword—
By whom will I comfort you? (Isa. 51:19)
7 Instead of your shame you shall have double honor,
And instead of confusion they shall rejoice in their portion.
Therefore in their land they shall possess double;
Everlasting joy shall be theirs. (Isa. 61:7)
5 Return to the stronghold:
9 The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. (Ps. 9:9)
2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (Ps. 18:2)
3 For You are my rock and my fortress;
Therefore, for Your name's sake,
Lead me and guide me. (Ps. 31:3)
3 Be my strong refuge,
To which I may resort continually;
You have given the commandment to save me,
For You are my rock and my fortress. (Ps. 71:3)
2 I will say of the Lord , “ He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.” (Ps. 91:2)
22 But the Lord has been my defense,
And my God the rock of my refuge. (Ps. 94:22)
2 My lovingkindness and my fortress,
My high tower and my deliverer,
My shield and the One in whom I take refuge,
Who subdues my people under me. (Ps. 144:2)
19 O Lord , my strength and my fortress,
My refuge in the day of affliction,
The Gentiles shall come to You
From the ends of the earth and say,
“Surely our fathers have inherited lies,
Worthlessness and unprofitable things. ” (Jer. 16:19)
16 The Lord also will roar from Zion,
And utter His voice from Jerusalem;
The heavens and earth will shake;
But the Lord will be a shelter for His people,
And the strength of the children of Israel. (Joel 3:16)
7 O Greece:
5 They shall be like mighty men,
Who tread down their enemies
In the mire of the streets in the battle.
They shall fight because the Lord is with them,
And the riders on horses shall be put to shame.
6 “I will strengthen the house of Judah,
And I will save the house of Joseph.
I will bring them back,
Because I have mercy on them.
They shall be as though I had not cast them aside;
For I am the Lord their God,
And I will hear them.
7 Those of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man,
And their heart shall rejoice as if with wine.
Yes, their children shall see it and be glad;
Their heart shall rejoice in the Lord . (Zech. 10:5-7)
9 It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. (Zech. 12:3-9)
V. JESUS WILL PERSONALLY INTERVENE IN THE BATTLE (9:14-17)
A The Lord will be “seen” over His people
14 Then the Lord will be seen over them,
And His arrow will go forth like lightning.
The Lord God will blow the trumpet,
And go with whirlwinds from the south. (Zech. 9:14)
And will defend Israel
15 The Lord of hosts will defend them;
They shall devour and subdue with slingstones.
They shall drink and roar as if with wine;
They shall be filled with blood like basins,
Like the corners of the altar. (Zech. 9:15)
Israel's sons are raised up as mighty men to resist a military attack from the sons of Greece
13 For I have bent Judah, My bow,
Fitted the bow with Ephraim,
And raised up your sons, O Zion,
Against your sons, O Greece,
And made you like the sword of a mighty man.” (Zech. 9:13)
This seems to be the same situation as Zechariah 12
3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it. 4 In that day,” says the Lord , “I will strike every horse with confusion, and its rider with madness; I will open My eyes on the house of Judah, and will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.
9 It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. (Zech. 12:3-9)
Israeli soldiers are anointed, like David, to resist the Antichrist's armies, and then “see” the One whom they pierced.
10 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.
(Zech. 12:10)
B Jesus will be seen: When Jesus returns, every eye will see Him
30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (Mt. 24:30)
64 Jesus said to him, “ It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.” (Mt. 26:64)
7He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him…all the tribes of the earth will mourn. (Rev. 1:7)
30All the tribes of the earth…will see the Son of Man coming…with power and great glory. (Mt. 24:30)
C The Lord will blow the trumpet:
31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. (Mt. 24:31)
16The Lord Himself will descend…with the trumpet of God. The dead in Christ will rise first. (1 Thes. 4:16)
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. (1 Cor. 15:52)
7 but in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets. (Rev. 10:7)
15 Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” (Rev. 11:15)
13In that day the great trumpet will be blown; they will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria, and they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem. (Isa. 27:13)
14 Then the Lord will be seen over them,
And His arrow will go forth like lightning.
The Lord God will blow the trumpet, (Zech. 9:14)
D Whirlwinds from the south:
1 Who is this who comes from Edom,
With dyed garments from Bozrah,
This One who is glorious in His apparel,
Traveling in the greatness of His strength?—
“I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”
2 Why is Your apparel red,
And Your garments like one who treads in the winepress?
3 “I have trodden the winepress alone,
And from the peoples no one was with Me.
For I have trodden them in My anger,
And trampled them in My fury;
Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments,
And I have stained all My robes.
4 For the day of vengeance is in My heart,
And the year of My redeemed has come.
5 I looked, but there was no one to help,
And I wondered
That there was no one to uphold;
Therefore My own arm brought salvation for Me;
And My own fury, it sustained Me.
6 I have trodden down the peoples in My anger,
Made them drunk in My fury,
And brought down their strength to the earth.” (Isa. 63:1-6)
6 The sword of the Lord is filled with blood,
It is made overflowing with fatness,
With the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 The wild oxen shall come down with them,
And the young bulls with the mighty bulls;
Their land shall be soaked with blood,
And their dust saturated with fatness.”
8 For it is the day of the Lord 's vengeance,
The year of recompense for the cause of Zion. (Isa. 34:6-8)
20 And it will be for a sign and for a witness to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to the Lord because of the oppressors, and He will send them a Savior and a Mighty One, and He will deliver them. (Isa. 19:20)
12 “I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob,
I will surely gather the remnant of Israel;
I will put them together like sheep of the fold,
Like a flock in the midst of their pasture;
They shall make a loud noise because of so many people.
13 The one who breaks open will come up before them;
They will break out,
Pass through the gate,
And go out by it;
Their king will pass before them,
With the Lord at their head.” (Mic. 2:12-13)
3 God came from Teman,
The Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah
His glory covered the heavens,
And the earth was full of His praise.
4 His brightness was like the light;
He had rays flashing from His hand,
And there His power was hidden.
5 Before Him went pestilence,
And fever followed at His feet.
12 You marched through the land in indignation;
You trampled the nations in anger.
13 You went forth for the salvation of Your people,
For salvation with Your Anointed.
You struck the head from the house of the wicked,
By laying bare from foundation to neck. Selah (Hab. 3:3-5, 12-13)
11 He shall pass through the sea with affliction,
And strike the waves of the sea:
All the depths of the River shall dry up.
Then the pride of Assyria shall be brought down,
And the scepter of Egypt shall depart. (Zech. 10:11)
3 Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O Mighty One,
With Your glory and Your majesty.
4 And in Your majesty ride prosperously because of truth, humility, and righteousness;
And Your right hand shall teach You awesome things.
5 Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the King's enemies;
The peoples fall under You. (Ps. 45:3-5)
24 They have seen Your procession, O God,
The procession of my God, my King, into the sanctuary.
29 Because of Your temple at Jerusalem,
Kings will bring presents to You.
30 Rebuke the beasts of the reeds,
The herd of bulls with the calves of the peoples,
Till everyone submits himself with pieces of silver.
Scatter the peoples who delight in war.
31 Envoys will come out of Egypt;
Ethiopia will quickly stretch out her hands to God.
32 Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth;
Oh, sing praises to the Lord, Selah
33 To Him who rides on the heaven of heavens, which were of old!
Indeed, He sends out His voice, a mighty voice. (Ps. 68:24, 29-33)
5 The Lord is at Your right hand;
He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath.
6 He shall judge among the nations,
He shall fill the places with dead bodies,
He shall execute the heads of many countries. (Ps. 110:5-6)
The Lord is pictured as “marching” through the wilderness to lead the people to the land of Israel in the days of Moses
2 And he said:
“The Lord came from Sinai,
And dawned on them from Seir;
He shone forth from Mount Paran,
And He came with ten thousands of saints;
From His right hand
Came a fiery law for them.
3 Yes, He loves the people;
All His saints are in Your hand;
They sit down at Your feet;
Everyone receives Your words.
4 Moses commanded a law for us,
A heritage of the congregation of Jacob.
5 And He was King in Jeshurun,
When the leaders of the people were gathered,
All the tribes of Israel together. (Deut. 33:2-5)
4 “ Lord , when You went out from Seir,
When You marched from the field of Edom,
The earth trembled and the heavens poured,
The clouds also poured water;
5 The mountains gushed before the Lord ,
This Sinai, before the Lord God of Israel. (Judg. 5:4-5)
7 O God, when You went out before Your people,
When You marched through the wilderness, Selah
8 The earth shook;
The heavens also dropped rain at the presence of God;
Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
9 You, O God, sent a plentiful rain,
Whereby You confirmed Your inheritance,
When it was weary. (Ps. 68:7-9)
F.The overthrow of the Gentile powers is followed by the exaltation of God's people
16The LORD their God will save them in that day…They shall be like the jewels of a crown, lifted like a banner over His land—17For how great is its goodness and how great its beauty! (Zech. 9:16-17)
3You shall also be a crown of glory…and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. (Isa. 62:3)
VI. ISRAEL IS TO BE BLESSED AND REGATHERED (10:1-12)
A The second part of this oracle is about Israel being blessed
Israel will be blessed agriculturally
1Ask the LORD for rain in the time of the latter rain. The LORD will make flashing clouds; He will give them showers of rain, grass in the field for everyone. (Zech. 10:1)
Spiritually
2The idols speak delusion; the diviners envision lies, and tell false dreams; they comfort in vain. Therefore the people wend their way like sheep; they are in trouble because there is no shepherd. (Zech. 10:2)
Governmentally
3 “My anger is kindled against the shepherds,
And I will punish the goatherds.
For the Lord of hosts will visit His flock,
The house of Judah,
And will make them as His royal horse in the battle.
4 From him comes the cornerstone,
From him the tent peg,
From him the battle bow,
From him every ruler together. (Zech. 10:3-4)
Militarily
5 They shall be like mighty men,
Who tread down their enemies
In the mire of the streets in the battle.
They shall fight because the Lord is with them,
And the riders on horses shall be put to shame.
6 “I will strengthen the house of Judah,
And I will save the house of Joseph.
I will bring them back,
Because I have mercy on them.
They shall be as though I had not cast them aside;
For I am the Lord their God,
And I will hear them.
7 Those of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man,
And their heart shall rejoice as if with wine.
Yes, their children shall see it and be glad;
Their heart shall rejoice in the Lord . (Zech. 10:5-7)
Gathered
8“I will whistle for them and gather them, for I will redeem them; and they shall increase as they once increased. 9I will sow them among the peoples, and they shall remember Me in far countries; they shall live, together with their children, and they shall return.” (Zech. 10:8-9)
B Israel will be blessed agriculturally.
1Ask the LORD for rain in the time of the latter rain. The LORD will make flashing clouds; He will give them showers of rain, grass in the field for everyone. (Zech. 10:1)
This speaks of literal rain. The rain comes in response to obedience and prayer.
12 The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. (Deut. 28:12)
He promised to send rain to bless the crops.
13 ‘And it shall be that if you earnestly obey My commandments which I command you today, to love the Lord your God and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14 then I will give you the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, your new wine, and your oil. (Deut. 11:13-14)
Many of God's promises are not guarantees, but invitations to partner with Him
36He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. (Mt. 9:36)
D. His anger with false shepherds (civil and political leaders, priests, etc.) is an expression of His zeal
14 So the angel who spoke with me said to me, “Proclaim, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts:
“I am zealous for Jerusalem
And for Zion with great zeal. (Zech. 1:14)
2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts:
‘I am zealous for Zion with great zeal;
With great fervor I am zealous for her.' (Zech. 8:2)
1. I will punish the goat herds:
3“My anger is kindled against the shepherds, and I will punish the goatherds. The Lord of hosts will visit His flock…and will make them as His royal horse in the battle.” (Zech. 10:3)
35From the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
(Mt. 23:20-35)
2. His royal horse in battle:
3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it. 4 In that day,” says the Lord , “I will strike every horse with confusion, and its rider with madness; I will open My eyes on the house of Judah, and will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.
9 It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. (Zech.12:3-9)
E Israel will be blessed governmentally, with leadership in society
4From him comes the cornerstone, from him the tent peg, from him the battle bow, from him every ruler together. (Zech. 10:4)
22 The key of the house of David
I will lay on his shoulder;
So he shall open, and no one shall shut;
And he shall shut, and no one shall open.
23 I will fasten him as a peg in a secure place,
And he will become a glorious throne to his father's house.
24 ‘They will hang on him all the glory of his father's house, the offspring and the posterity, all vessels of small quantity, from the cups to all the pitchers. 25 In that day,' says the Lord of hosts, ‘the peg that is fastened in the secure place will be removed and be cut down and fall, and the burden that was on it will be cut off; for the Lord has spoken.' ” (Isa. 22:22-24)
16 Therefore thus says the Lord God :
“Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation,
A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
Whoever believes will not act hastily. (Isa. 28:16)
2. The “cornerstone” unites two walls at the corner—such a leader brings unity to society.
The “tent peg” holds the tent in place, even in the pressures of a storm.
The “battle bow” speaks of military leadership in the end times
13 For I have bent Judah, My bow,
Fitted the bow with Ephraim,
And raised up your sons, O Zion,
Against your sons, O Greece,
And made you like the sword of a mighty man.” (Zech.9:13)
5“They shall be like mighty men, who tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle. They shall fight because the LORD is with them…6I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph…7Those of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man…their children shall see it and be glad; their heart shall rejoice in the LORD.” (Zech. 10:5-7)
(Zech. 12:5-8)
2 Their children: The children will also have a dynamic relationship with Jesus
7 Those of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man,
And their heart shall rejoice as if with wine.
Yes, their children shall see it and be glad;
Their heart shall rejoice in the Lord .
9 “I will sow them among the peoples,
And they shall remember Me in far countries;
They shall live, together with their children,
And they shall return. (Zech. 10:7, 9)
They will personally see the Lord as their joy and source of security and strength, instead of only relying on what their parents say and experience in the Lord.
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet
Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord .
6 And he will turn
The hearts of the fathers to the children,
And the hearts of the children to their fathers,
Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.” (Mal. 4:5-6)
G 1. I will whistle:
26He will lift up a banner to the nations from afar, and will whistle to them from the end of the earth; surely they shall come with speed, swiftly. (Isa. 5:26)
2.I will sow:
27 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord , that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast. (Jer. 31:27)
23 “How can you say, ‘I am not polluted,
I have not gone after the Baals'?
See your way in the valley;
Know what you have done:
You are a swift dromedary breaking loose in her ways, (Jer. 2:23)
23Then I will sow her for Myself in the earth, and I will have mercy on her . (Hos. 2:23)
H Zechariah gives details about the end-time regathering of the Jewish people
10“I will also bring them back from the land of Egypt, and gather them from Assyria. I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon…11He shall pass through the sea with affliction, and strike the waves of the sea: all the depths of the River shall dry up. Then the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the scepter of Egypt shall depart. 12I will strengthen them in the LORD, and they shall walk up and down in His name.” (Zech. 10:10-12)
1 From Egypt and Assyria
11 It shall come to pass in that day
That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time
To recover the remnant of His people who are left,
From Assyria and Egypt,
From Pathros and Cush,
From Elam and Shinar,
From Hamath and the islands of the sea.
16 There will be a highway for the remnant of His people
Who will be left from Assyria,
As it was for Israel
In the day that he came up from the land of Egypt. (Isa. 11:11, 16)
13 So it shall be in that day:
The great trumpet will be blown;
They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria,
And they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt,
And shall worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem. (Isa. 27:13)
10 “They shall walk after the Lord .
He will roar like a lion.
When He roars,
Then His sons shall come trembling from the west;
11 They shall come trembling like a bird from Egypt,
Like a dove from the land of Assyria.
And I will let them dwell in their houses,”
Says the Lord . (Hos. 11:10-11)
6 They shall waste with the sword the land of Assyria,
And the land of Nimrod at its entrances;
Thus He shall deliver us from the Assyrian,
When he comes into our land
And when he treads within our borders. (Mic. 5:6)
In that day they shall come to you
From Assyria and the fortified cities,
From the fortress to the River,
From sea to sea,
And mountain to mountain.
13 Yet the land shall be desolate
Because of those who dwell in it,
And for the fruit of their deeds.
God Will Forgive Israel
14 Shepherd Your people with Your staff,
The flock of Your heritage,
Who dwell solitarily in a woodland,
In the midst of Carmel;
Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead,
As in days of old.
15 “As in the days when you came out of the land of Egypt,
I will show them wonders.” (Mic. 7:12-15)
10 I will also bring them back from the land of Egypt,
And gather them from Assyria.
I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon,
Until no more room is found for them.
11 He shall pass through the sea with affliction,
And strike the waves of the sea:
All the depths of the River shall dry up.
Then the pride of Assyria shall be brought down,
And the scepter of Egypt shall depart. (Zech. 10:10-11)
16There will be a highway for the remnant of His people who will be left from Assyria, as it was for Israel in the day that he came up from the land of Egypt. (Isa. 11:16)
13In that day the great trumpet will be blown; they will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria, and they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem. (Isa. 27:13)
2 Captives: Zechariah promised that the Lord would liberate Jewish captives
11 “As for you also,
Because of the blood of your covenant,
I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. (Zech. 9:11)
2 For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (Zech. 14:2)
4.Great miracles:
15“As in the days when you came out of the land of Egypt, I will show them wonders. 16The nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might; they shall put their hand over their mouth…17They shall be afraid of the LORD our God.” (Mic. 7:15-17)
5 He will do this again when He dries up the Euphrates River
12…poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up. (Rev. 16:12)
