Session 7 The Four Chariots and Our Messiah (Zech. 6:1-15)
I. INTRODUCTION
A Zechariah was commissioned to proclaim the message of God's zeal for Jerusalem.
14“Proclaim…‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “I am zealous for Jerusalem…with great zeal.” (Zech. 1:14)
The sure destruction of her enemies
15 I am exceedingly angry with the nations at ease;
For I was a little angry,
And they helped— but with evil intent. ”
21 And I said, “What are these coming to do?”
So he said, “These are the horns that scattered Judah, so that no one could lift up his head; but the craftsmen are coming to terrify them, to cast out the horns of the nations that lifted up their horn against the land of Judah to scatter it.” (Zech. 1:15, 21)
D. In the eighth vision, Zechariah saw the Lord remove all His enemies worldwide
Then I turned and raised my eyes and looked, and behold, four chariots were coming from between two mountains, and the mountains were mountains of bronze. 2 With the first chariot were red horses, with the second chariot black horses, 3 with the third chariot white horses, and with the fourth chariot dappled horses—strong steeds. 4 Then I answered and said to the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”
5 And the angel answered and said to me, “These are four spirits of heaven, who go out from their station before the Lord of all the earth. 6 The one with the black horses is going to the north country, the white are going after them, and the dappled are going toward the south country.” 7 Then the strong steeds went out, eager to go, that they might walk to and fro throughout the earth. And He said, “Go, walk to and fro throughout the earth.” So they walked to and fro throughout the earth. 8 And He called to me, and spoke to me, saying, “See, those who go toward the north country have given rest to My Spirit in the north country.” (Zech. 6:1-8)
He sees the final breakthrough of the kingdom at the end of the age
3 “My anger is kindled against the shepherds,
And I will punish the goatherds.
For the Lord of hosts will visit His flock,
The house of Judah,
And will make them as His royal horse in the battle.
4 From him comes the cornerstone,
From him the tent peg,
From him the battle bow,
From him every ruler together.
5 They shall be like mighty men,
Who tread down their enemies
In the mire of the streets in the battle.
They shall fight because the Lord is with them,
And the riders on horses shall be put to shame.
6 “I will strengthen the house of Judah,
And I will save the house of Joseph.
I will bring them back,
Because I have mercy on them.
They shall be as though I had not cast them aside;
For I am the Lord their God,
And I will hear them.
7 Those of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man,
And their heart shall rejoice as if with wine.
Yes, their children shall see it and be glad;
Their heart shall rejoice in the Lord .
8 I will whistle for them and gather them,
For I will redeem them;
And they shall increase as they once increased.
9 “I will sow them among the peoples,
And they shall remember Me in far countries;
They shall live, together with their children,
And they shall return. (Zech. 10:3-9)
3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it. 4 In that day,” says the Lord , “I will strike every horse with confusion, and its rider with madness; I will open My eyes on the house of Judah, and will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. 5 And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my strength in the Lord of hosts, their God.' 6 In that day I will make the governors of Judah like a firepan in the woodpile, and like a fiery torch in the sheaves; they shall devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left, but Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place—Jerusalem.
7 “The Lord will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall not become greater than that of Judah. 8 In that day the Lord will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them in that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the Angel of the Lord before them. 9 It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. (Zech. 12:3-9)
2 For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
3 Then the Lord will go forth
And fight against those nations,
As He fights in the day of battle.
4 And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Which faces Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,
From east to west,
Making a very large valley;
Half of the mountain shall move toward the north
And half of it toward the south.
5 Then you shall flee through My mountain valley,
For the mountain valley shall reach to Azal.
Yes, you shall flee
As you fled from the earthquake
In the days of Uzziah king of Judah.
Thus the Lord my God will come,
And all the saints with You.
12 And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem:
Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet,
Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets,
And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths.
13 It shall come to pass in that day
That a great panic from the Lord will be among them.
Everyone will seize the hand of his neighbor,
And raise his hand against his neighbor's hand;
14 Judah also will fight at Jerusalem.
And the wealth of all the surrounding nations
Shall be gathered together:
Gold, silver, and apparel in great abundance.
15 Such also shall be the plague
On the horse and the mule,
On the camel and the donkey,
And on all the cattle that will be in those camps.
So shall this plague be.
The Nations Worship the King
16 And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. (Zech. 14:2-5, 12-16)
This vision gives us insight into the activity occurring in the angelic realm when war breaks out on the earth
13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia.
20 Then he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? And now I must return to fight with the prince of Persia; and when I have gone forth, indeed the prince of Greece will come. 21 But I will tell you what is noted in the Scripture of Truth. (No one upholds me against these, except Michael your prince. (Dan. 10:13, 20-21)
Satan Thrown Out of Heaven
7 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8 but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. 9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. (Rev. 12:7-9)
E. The eighth vision develops the Lord's promise in the second vision
18 Then I raised my eyes and looked, and there were four horns. 19 And I said to the angel who talked with me, “What are these?”
So he answered me, “These are the horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”
20 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen.
Israel is indestructible because of God's covenant with her. He has promised to make a full end of all nations where He scattered Israel, but He will not make a full end of Israel
11“Though I make a full end of all nations where I have scattered you, yet I will not make a complete end of you. But I will correct you in justice…” (Jer. 30:11)
F. The first and last visions are like bookends of the eight-vision revelation received in one night. Important parts of the eighth vision link to the first vision
Vision of the Horses
7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet: 8 I saw by night, and behold, a man riding on a red horse, and it stood among the myrtle trees in the hollow; and behind him were horses: red, sorrel, and white. 9 Then I said, “My lord, what are these?” So the angel who talked with me said to me, “I will show you what they are. ”
10 And the man who stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, “These are the ones whom the Lord has sent to walk to and fro throughout the earth.”
11 So they answered the Angel of the Lord , who stood among the myrtle trees, and said, “We have walked to and fro throughout the earth, and behold, all the earth is resting quietly.”
The Lord Will Comfort Zion
12 Then the Angel of the Lord answered and said, “O Lord of hosts, how long will You not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which You were angry these seventy years?”
13 And the Lord answered the angel who talked to me, with good and comforting words. 14 So the angel who spoke with me said to me, “Proclaim, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts:
“I am zealous for Jerusalem
And for Zion with great zeal.
15 I am exceedingly angry with the nations at ease;
For I was a little angry,
And they helped— but with evil intent. ”
16 ‘Therefore thus says the Lord :
“I am returning to Jerusalem with mercy;
My house shall be built in it,” says the Lord of hosts,
“And a surveyor's line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem.”
17 “Again proclaim, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts:
“My cities shall again spread out through prosperity;
The Lord will again comfort Zion,
And will again choose Jerusalem.” (Zech. 1:7-17)
Both visions describe different colored horses going through the earth. There are four horses in the first vision and four chariots pulled by horses in the eighth vision. The theme of rest is in both visions
8 And He called to me, and spoke to me, saying, “See, those who go toward the north country have given rest to My Spirit in the north country.” (Zech. 6:8)
II. EIGHTH VISION: THE FOUR CHARIOTS (6:1-8)
A. Summary:
9 And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be—“The LORD is one.” (Zech. 14:9)
10He shall speak peace to the nations; His dominion shall be…to the ends of the earth . (Zech. 9:10)
11Many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and they shall become My people. (Zech. 2:11)
B The vision has three parts: the symbolism related to the four war chariots
1 Then I turned and raised my eyes and looked, and behold, four chariots were coming from between two mountains, and the mountains were mountains of bronze. 2 With the first chariot were red horses, with the second chariot black horses, 3 with the third chariot white horses, and with the fourth chariot dappled horses—strong steeds. (Zech. 6:1-3)
The explanation of the symbolism of the chariots
4 Then I answered and said to the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”
5 And the angel answered and said to me, “These are four spirits of heaven, who go out from their station before the Lord of all the earth. (Zech. 6:4-5)
The mission of the chariots
6 The one with the black horses is going to the north country, the white are going after them, and the dappled are going toward the south country.” 7 Then the strong steeds went out, eager to go, that they might walk to and fro throughout the earth. And He said, “Go, walk to and fro throughout the earth.” So they walked to and fro throughout the earth. 8 And He called to me, and spoke to me, saying, “See, those who go toward the north country have given rest to My Spirit in the north country.” (Zech. 6:6-8)
D. This vision shows just one aspect of Jesus' heavenly arsenal when He goes to war against wicked nations in the end times
Christ on a White Horse
11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:
KING OF KINGS AND
LORD OF LORDS.
The Beast and His Armies Defeated
17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, “Come and gather together for the supper of the great God, 18 that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great.”
19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21 And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh. (Rev. 19:11-21)
E. Zechariah saw four mighty war chariots coming out from between two bronze mountains.
(Zech. 6:1 See above )
With the third chariot white horses, and with the fourth chariot dappled horses—strong steeds.
(Zech. 6:1-3 See above )
1. Four: The number four is the number of the earth, or that which is worldwide. It speaks of the four corners of the earth being affected by these judgments
(Zech. 6:5 See above )
3. Mountains of bronze: These symbolize God's judgment against sin
15 His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; (Rev. 1:15)
18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write,
‘These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass: (Rev. 2:18)
4. Four strong horses: Each chariot is drawn by a team of strong horses.
3 with the third chariot white horses, and with the fourth chariot dappled horses—strong steeds.
7 Then the strong steeds went out, eager to go, that they might walk to and fro throughout the earth. And He said, “Go, walk to and fro throughout the earth.” So they walked to and fro throughout the earth. (Zech. 6:3, 7)
Elijah and Elisha saw horses with heavenly chariots.
11 Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. (2 Kgs. 2:11)
17 And Elisha prayed, and said, “ Lord , I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. (2 Kgs. 6:17)
5. Four colors: The four sets of horses in Zechariah
8 I saw by night, and behold, a man riding on a red horse, and it stood among the myrtle trees in the hollow; and behind him were horses: red, sorrel, and white. 9 Then I said, “My lord, what are these?” So the angel who talked with me said to me, “I will show you what they are. ”
10 And the man who stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, “These are the ones whom the Lord has sent to walk to and fro throughout the earth.”
11 So they answered the Angel of the Lord , who stood among the myrtle trees, and said, “We have walked to and fro throughout the earth, and behold, all the earth is resting quietly.” (Zech. 1:8-11)
(Zech 6:1-8 See above )
Four horses with similar colors in Revelation.
First Seal: The Conqueror
1 Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come and see.” 2 And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.
Second Seal: Conflict on Earth
3 When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come and see.” 4 Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.
Third Seal: Scarcity on Earth
5 When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.”
Fourth Seal: Widespread Death on Earth
7 When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” 8 So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth. (Rev. 6:1-8)
2 With the first chariot were red horses, with the second chariot black horses, 3 with the third chariot white horses, and with the fourth chariot dappled horses—strong steeds. (Zech. 6:2-3)
6. Red horses: The red horse speaks of bloodshed in war. John saw the rider on a red horse being given a sword to strike the earth with war
(Rev. 6:4 See above )
Zechariah saw a Man riding a red horse to judge the nations that oppressed Israel
Isaiah described the Messiah coming to Israel in red garments because it was the day of vengeance
Who is this who comes from Edom, w ith dyed garments from Bozrah,
This One who is glorious in His apparel, t raveling in the greatness of His strength?—
“I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”
2 Why is Your apparel red, a nd Your garments like one who treads in the winepress?
3 “I have trodden the winepress alone, a nd from the peoples no one was with Me.
For I have trodden them in My anger, a nd trampled them in My fury;
Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, a nd I have stained all My robes.
4 For the day of vengeance is in My heart, a nd the year of My redeemed has come.
5 I looked, but there was no one to help, a nd I wondered
That there was no one to uphold;
Therefore My own arm brought salvation for Me; a nd My own fury, it sustained Me.
6 I have trodden down the peoples in My anger,
Made them drunk in My fury, a nd brought down their strength to the earth.” (Isa. 63:1-6)
7. Black horses: The black horse speaks of mourning caused by famine in Revelation.
5 When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. (Rev. 6:5)
8. White horses: The white horse speaks of the victory of conquest in Revelation.
2 And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer. (Rev. 6:2)
9. Dappled horses:
8 I saw by night, and behold, a man riding on a red horse, and it stood among the myrtle trees in the hollow; and behind him were horses: red, sorrel, and white. (Zech. 1:8)
F. The interpretation of the four chariots as four angels
4 Then I answered and said to the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?” 5 And the angel answered and said to me, “These are four spirits of heaven, who go out from their station before the Lord of all the earth.” (Zech. 6:4-5)
1 What are these: Zechariah asked for understanding of the four chariots
Then I turned and raised my eyes and looked, and behold, four chariots were coming from between two mountains, and the mountains were mountains of bronze. 2 With the first chariot were red horses, with the second chariot black horses, 3 with the third chariot white horses, and with the fourth chariot dappled horses—strong steeds. (Zech. 6:1-3)
2 Four spirits: Here, the four winds of heaven are sent forth to destroy the same four Gentile empires (Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome) that scattered Israel, as seen in Zechariah's second vision
2 Daniel spoke, saying, “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the Great Sea. 3 And four great beasts came up from the sea, each different from the other. (Dan. 7:2-3)
19 And I said to the angel who talked with me, “What are these?”
So he answered me, “These are the horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.” (Zech. 1:19)
G. The divine assignments given to each team of horses and their chariots.
6 “The one [chariot] with the black horses is going to the north country, the white are going after them, and the dappled are going toward the south country.” 7 Then the strong steeds went out, eager to go, that they might walk to and fro throughout the earth. And He said, “Go, walk to and fro throughout the earth.” So they walked to and fro throughout the earth. 8 And He called to me, and spoke to me, saying, “See, those who go toward the north country have given rest to My Spirit in the north country.” (Zech. 6:6-8)
1 Strong steeds: Each team of horses is strong and mighty for battle
7 Then the strong steeds went out, eager to go, that they might walk to and fro throughout the earth. And He said, “Go, walk to and fro throughout the earth.” So they walked to and fro throughout the earth. (Zech. 6: 7)
4 He said “Go”: The Lord of all the earth
5 And the angel answered and said to me, “These are four spirits of heaven, who go out from their station before the Lord of all the earth. (Zech. 6:5)
11 Then I answered and said to him, “What are these two olive trees—at the right of the lampstand and at its left?” (Zech. 4:11)
Jesus, as captain of the armies of heaven
13 Joshua…said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?” 14He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” (Josh. 5:13-14)
6 White horses go after them:
11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.
14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. (Rev. 19:11, 14)
8. Red horses:
8 I saw by night, and behold, a man riding on a red horse, and it stood among the myrtle trees in the hollow; and behind him were horses: red, sorrel, and white. (Zech. 1:8)
9. Rest to My Spirit: Throughout history, the Spirit is pictured as continually striving with the nations
3 And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” (Gen. 6:3)
10. The Spirit will rest when His judgments on the north are completed.
8 And He called to me, and spoke to me, saying, “See, those who go toward the north country have given rest to My Spirit in the north country.” (Zech. 6:8)
It is from the north that the Antichrist's empire will rise up to attack Israel.
15 “You will come from your place out of the far north…a great company and a mighty army. 16You will come up against My people Israel…in the latter days…” (Ezek. 38:15-16)
2 “I will…bringing you up from the far north, and bring you against the mountains of Israel…4 You shall fall upon the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops…” (Ezek. 39:2-4)
11. Israel's northern enemy: Israel will be delivered from a northern enemy in the end times
15 but, ‘The Lord lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north and from all the lands where He had driven them.' For I will bring them back into their land which I gave to their fathers. (Jer. 16:15)
8 but, ‘As the Lord lives who brought up and led the descendants of the house of Israel from the north country and from all the countries where I had driven them.' And they shall dwell in their own land.” (Jer. 23:8)
8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country,
And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among them the blind and the lame,
The woman with child
And the one who labors with child, together;
A great throng shall return there. (Jer. 31:8)
6 Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its troops—many people are with you.
15 Then you will come from your place out of the far north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great company and a mighty army. (Ezek. 38:6, 15)
2 and I will turn you around and lead you on, bringing you up from the far north, and bring you against the mountains of Israel. (Ezek. 39:2)
20 “But I will remove far from you the northern army,
And will drive him away into a barren and desolate land,
With his face toward the eastern sea
And his back toward the western sea;
His stench will come up,
And his foul odor will rise,
Because he has done monstrous things.” (Joel 2:20)
Jeremiah prophesied of a mighty Babylonian army coming from the north to judge Israel
13 And the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?”
And I said, “I see a boiling pot, and it is facing away from the north.”
14 Then the Lord said to me:
“Out of the north calamity shall break forth
On all the inhabitants of the land.
15 For behold, I am calling
All the families of the kingdoms of the north,” says the Lord ;
“They shall come and each one set his throne
At the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem,
Against all its walls all around,
And against all the cities of Judah. (Jer. 1:13-15)
12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say:
‘Return, backsliding Israel,' says the Lord ;
‘I will not cause My anger to fall on you.
For I am merciful,' says the Lord ;
‘I will not remain angry forever.
18 “In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given as an inheritance to your fathers. (Jer. 3:12, 18)
6 Set up the standard toward Zion.
Take refuge! Do not delay!
For I will bring disaster from the north,
And great destruction.” (Jer. 4:6)
1 “O you children of Benjamin,
Gather yourselves to flee from the midst of Jerusalem!
Blow the trumpet in Tekoa,
And set up a signal-fire in Beth Haccerem;
For disaster appears out of the north,
And great destruction.
22 Thus says the Lord :
“Behold, a people comes from the north country,
And a great nation will be raised from the farthest parts of the earth. (Jer. 6:1, 22)
22 Behold, the noise of the report has come,
And a great commotion out of the north country,
To make the cities of Judah desolate, a den of jackals. (Jer. 10:22)
20 Lift up your eyes and see
Those who come from the north.
Where is the flock that was given to you,
Your beautiful sheep? (Jer. 13:20)
12 Can anyone break iron,
The northern iron and the bronze? (Jer. 15:12)
8 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Because you have not heard My words, 9 behold, I will send and take all the families of the north,' says the Lord , ‘and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and will bring them against this land, against its inhabitants, and against these nations all around, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, a hissing, and perpetual desolations. (Jer. 25:8-9)
Jeremiah warned the Egyptians that they would be attacked from the north
6 “Do not let the swift flee away,
Nor the mighty man escape;
They will stumble and fall
Toward the north, by the River Euphrates.
10 For this is the day of the Lord God of hosts,
A day of vengeance,
That He may avenge Himself on His adversaries.
The sword shall devour;
It shall be satiated and made drunk with their blood;
For the Lord God of hosts has a sacrifice
In the north country by the River Euphrates.
20 “Egypt is a very pretty heifer,
But destruction comes, it comes from the north.
24 The daughter of Egypt shall be ashamed;
She shall be delivered into the hand
Of the people of the north.” (Jer. 46:6,10, 20, 24)
Babylon would be destroyed from the north by the Medo-Persian army
3 For out of the north a nation comes up against her,
Which shall make her land desolate,
And no one shall dwell therein.
They shall move, they shall depart,
Both man and beast.
9 For behold, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon
An assembly of great nations from the north country,
And they shall array themselves against her;
From there she shall be captured.
Their arrows shall be like those of an expert warrior;
None shall return in vain.
41 “Behold, a people shall come from the north,
And a great nation and many kings
Shall be raised up from the ends of the earth. (Jer. 50:3, 9, 41)
For more on the northern army see the following verses
31 Wail, O gate! Cry, O city!
All you of Philistia are dissolved;
For smoke will come from the north,
And no one will be alone in his appointed times.” (Isa. 14:31)
25 “I have raised up one from the north,
And he shall come;
From the rising of the sun he shall call on My name;
And he shall come against princes as though mortar,
As the potter treads clay. (Isa. 41:25)
2 Thus says the Lord :
“Behold, waters rise out of the north,
And shall be an overflowing flood;
They shall overflow the land and all that is in it,
The city and those who dwell within;
Then the men shall cry,
And all the inhabitants of the land shall wail. (Jer. 47:2)
3 For out of the north a nation comes up against her,
Which shall make her land desolate,
And no one shall dwell therein.
They shall move, they shall depart,
Both man and beast.
9 For behold, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon
An assembly of great nations from the north country,
And they shall array themselves against her;
From there she shall be captured.
Their arrows shall be like those of an expert warrior;
None shall return in vain.
26 Come against her from the farthest border;
Open her storehouses;
Cast her up as heaps of ruins,
And destroy her utterly;
Let nothing of her be left.
41 “Behold, a people shall come from the north,
And a great nation and many kings
Shall be raised up from the ends of the earth.
46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon
The earth trembles,
And the cry is heard among the nations. (Jer. 50:3, 9, 26, 41, 46)
27 Set up a banner in the land,
Blow the trumpet among the nations!
Prepare the nations against her,
Call the kingdoms together against her:
Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz.
Appoint a general against her;
Cause the horses to come up like the bristling locusts.
48 Then the heavens and the earth and all that is in them
Shall sing joyously over Babylon;
For the plunderers shall come to her from the north,” says the Lord . (Jer. 51:27; 48)
20 “But I will remove far from you the northern army,
And will drive him away into a barren and desolate land,
With his face toward the eastern sea
And his back toward the western sea;
His stench will come up,
And his foul odor will rise,
Because he has done monstrous things.” (Joel 2:20)
13 And He will stretch out His hand against the north,
Destroy Assyria,
And make Nineveh a desolation,
As dry as the wilderness. (Zeph. 2:13)
I. The four chariots completed their task of going throughout the earth to prepare it for God's dominion through the Messiah, called the Branch
12 Then speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, saying:
“Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH!
From His place He shall branch out,
And He shall build the temple of the Lord ;
13 Yes, He shall build the temple of the Lord .
He shall bear the glory,
And shall sit and rule on His throne;
So He shall be a priest on His throne,
And the counsel of peace shall be between them both.” (Zech. 6:12-13)
J. The crowning of Joshua is symbolic of the crowning of Jesus as the King of kings and the Great High Priest, when Jews and Gentiles will dwell together under His glorious leadership
15 Even those from afar shall come and build the temple of the Lord . Then you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you. And this shall come to pass if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God.” (Zech. 6:15)
III. CROWNING OF JOSHUA: THE COMING MESSIAH (6:9-15)
A After the eight night visions, the Lord told Zechariah to crown Joshua the high priest with a crown made of silver and gold
11 Take the silver and gold, make an elaborate crown, and set it on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest. (Zech. 6:11)
B. The section has two parts:
The symbolic crowning of Joshua
9 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 10 “Receive the gift from the captives—from Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah, who have come from Babylon—and go the same day and enter the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah. 11 Take the silver and gold, make an elaborate crown, and set it on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest. (Zech. 6:9-11)
A messianic prophecy of Jesus as the Branch
12 Then speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, saying:
“Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH!
From His place He shall branch out, and He shall build the temple of the Lord ; 13 Yes, He shall build the temple of the Lord .
He shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule on His throne;
So He shall be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.”
14 “Now the elaborate crown shall be for a memorial in the temple of the Lord for Helem, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and Hen the son of Zephaniah. 15 Even those from afar shall come and build the temple of the Lord . Then you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you. And this shall come to pass if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God.” (Zech. 6:12-15)
C The symbolic crowning of Joshua the high priest
1 Receive the gift:
Zerubbabel completed the temple about three years later in 516 BC
15 Now the temple was finished on the third day of the month of Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius. (Ezra 6:15)
3. Make an elaborate crown:
b. Joshua's crowning prefigures the “Messiah-Branch” who will usher in the millennial kingdom. The crown was twice referred to as an “elaborate” crown
11 Take the silver and gold, make an elaborate crown, and set it on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest.
14 “Now the elaborate crown shall be for a memorial in the temple of the Lord for Helem, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and Hen the son of Zephaniah. (Zech. 6:11, 14)
E. A messianic prophecy of Jesus as the Branch
(Zech. 6:12-15 See above )
1 Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH: Jesus the Branch—is the King
5 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord , “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
6 In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely;
Now this is His name by which He will be called:
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. (Jer. 23:5-6)
A servant
‘Hear, O Joshua, the high priest, You and your companions who sit before you, For they are a wondrous sign; f or behold, I am bringing forth My Servant the BRANCH. (Zech. 3:8)
A Man
12 Then speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, saying:
“Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH!
From His place He shall branch out,
And He shall build the temple of the Lord ; (Zech. 6:12)
He is the Lord
2 In that day the Branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious;
And the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and appealing
For those of Israel who have escaped. (Isa. 4:2)
2 From His place He shall branch out:
7 Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end…to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. (Isa. 9:7)
3 He shall build the temple of the LORD:
12 Then speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, saying:
“Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH!
From His place He shall branch out,
And He shall build the temple of the Lord ;
13 Yes, He shall build the temple of the Lord .
He shall bear the glory,
And shall sit and rule on His throne;
So He shall be a priest on His throne,
And the counsel of peace shall be between them both.” (Zech. 6:12-13)
Jesus first built a spiritual temple
Christ Our Cornerstone
19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. (Eph. 2:19-22)
4 He shall rule on His throne: Solomon publicly referred to the prophecy that David gave about one of his sons building the temple and ruling on it
12“Iwill set up your seed after you…13He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever”.
(2 Sam. 7:12-13)
16 Therefore, Lord God of Israel, now keep what You promised Your servant David my father, saying, ‘You shall not fail to have a man sit before Me on the throne of Israel, only if your sons take heed to their way, that they walk in My law as you have walked before Me.'
(2 Chr. 6:16)
6 I heard Him speaking to me from the temple…7 He said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of My throne…where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel forever.” (Ezek. 43:6-7)
F. Zechariah was commissioned to proclaim the message of God's zeal for Jerusalem
The Lord is zealous to build His temple in Jerusalem and to live there forever
14“Proclaim, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “I am zealous for Jerusalem… 16I am returning to Jerusalem with mercy; My house [the temple] shall be built in it.” ( Zech. 1:14, 16)
5 For I,' says the Lord , ‘will be a wall of fire all around her, and I will be the glory in her midst.'
10 “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” says the Lord . (Zech. 2:5, 10)
G. The crown was to be put in the temple to remind the men of Babylon about the Messiah
14“Now the elaborate crown shall be for a memorial in the temple of the LORD for Helem, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and Hen the son of Zephaniah. 15Even those who are far away shall come and build the temple of the LORD. Then you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent Me to you and this shall come to pass if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God.” (Zech. 6:14-15)
4 Those from afar will build the temple:
11 “Many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and they shall become My people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you. (Zech. 2:11)
22 Yes, many peoples and strong nations
Shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem,
And to pray before the Lord .' (Zech. 8:22)
6 “Also the sons of the foreigner
Who join themselves to the Lord , to serve Him,
And to love the name of the Lord , to be His servants—
Everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath,
And holds fast My covenant—
7 Even them I will bring to My holy mountain,
And make them joyful in My house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
Will be accepted on My altar;
For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.” (Isa. 56:6-7)
4 “Lift up your eyes all around, and see:
They all gather together, they come to you;
Your sons shall come from afar,
And your daughters shall be nursed at your side.
5 Then you shall see and become radiant,
And your heart shall swell with joy;
Because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you,
The wealth of the Gentiles shall come to you.
6 The multitude of camels shall cover your land,
The dromedaries of Midian and Ephah;
All those from Sheba shall come;
They shall bring gold and incense,
And they shall proclaim the praises of the Lord .
7 All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together to you,
The rams of Nebaioth shall minister to you;
They shall ascend with acceptance on My altar,
And I will glorify the house of My glory.
8 “Who are these who fly like a cloud,
And like doves to their roosts?
9 Surely the coastlands shall wait for Me;
And the ships of Tarshish will come first,
To bring your sons from afar,
Their silver and their gold with them,
To the name of the Lord your God,
And to the Holy One of Israel,
Because He has glorified you.
10 “The sons of foreigners shall build up your walls,
And their kings shall minister to you;
For in My wrath I struck you,
But in My favor I have had mercy on you.
11 Therefore your gates shall be open continually;
They shall not be shut day or night,
That men may bring to you the wealth of the Gentiles,
And their kings in procession.
12 For the nation and kingdom which will not serve you shall perish,
And those nations shall be utterly ruined.
13 “The glory of Lebanon shall come to you,
The cypress, the pine, and the box tree together,
To beautify the place of My sanctuary;
And I will make the place of My feet glorious.
14 Also the sons of those who afflicted you
Shall come bowing to you,
And all those who despised you shall fall prostrate at the soles of your feet;
And they shall call you The City of the Lord ,
Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
15 “Whereas you have been forsaken and hated,
So that no one went through you,
I will make you an eternal excellence,
A joy of many generations.
16 You shall drink the milk of the Gentiles,
And milk the breast of kings;
You shall know that I, the Lord , am your Savior
And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
17 “Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
Instead of iron I will bring silver,
Instead of wood, bronze,
And instead of stones, iron.
I will also make your officers peace,
And your magistrates righteousness.
18 Violence shall no longer be heard in your land,
Neither wasting nor destruction within your borders;
But you shall call your walls Salvation,
And your gates Praise. (Isa. 60:4-18)
Peter and Paul may have referenced this passage
39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:39)
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (Eph. 2:13)
5. Helem, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and Hen: There are minor differences in the names here as compared to verse 10
10. Heldai is the same as Helem; Hen is not a name but means the “kindness” of Josiah, the son of Zephaniah (Zech. 6:10)
