Session 4 Grace to Walk in Leadership (Zech. 3:1-10) I. INTRODUCTION 1. In the first three visions, the Lord promises to manifest His zeal and mercy by returning to personally live in Jerusalem, to fill the temple with His glory, to take full possession of the land of Israel, and to draw all nations to worship and obey the LORD 16 ‘Therefore thus says the Lord : “I am returning to Jerusalem with mercy; 10 “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” says the Lord . 11 “Many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and they shall become My people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you. 12 And the Lord will take possession of Judah as His inheritance in the Holy Land, and will again choose Jerusalem. 13 Be silent, all flesh, before the Lord , for He is aroused from His holy habitation!” (Zech. 2:10-12) This vision presents Israel's leadership and national calling as priests to all the nations 6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” (Ex. 19:6) 6 But you shall be named the priests of the Lord , D. In Zechariah 3, He cleanses their heart and leads them to wholehearted obedience 3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the Angel. 4 Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.” 5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head, and they put the clothes on him. And the Angel of the Lord stood by. The Coming Branch 6 Then the Angel of the Lord admonished Joshua, saying, 7 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘If you will walk in My ways, In Zechariah 4, He helps their work and values it even when it is small and difficult 6 So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: F. The first obstacle to overcome is the lie that we fail too much to be used by God Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord , and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?” 3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the Angel. 4 Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.” 5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head, and they put the clothes on him. And the Angel of the Lord stood by. (Zech. 3:1-5) The next obstacle to overcome is the lie that we lack too much to complete God's will 6 So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: 8 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 9 “The hands of Zerubbabel
1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord , and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?” (Zech. 3:1-2) Zechariah saw Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord (the preincarnate Christ) 3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the Angel. 4 Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.” (Zech. 3:3-4) Joshua was fully cleansed and then called to walk in wholehearted obedience to the Lord 7 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘If you will walk in My ways, He and his leadership team were to be a prophetic sign of the Messiah and of His grace 8 ‘Hear, O Joshua, the high priest, The whole nation of Israel will eventually partake of the Messiah's extravagant grace 10 In that day,' says the Lord of hosts,
3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the Angel. 4 Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.” 5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” (Zech. 3:3-5) An exhortation to wholeheartedness 6 Then the Angel of the Lord admonished Joshua, saying, 7 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘If you will walk in My ways, and if you will keep My command, then you shall also judge My house, and likewise have charge of My courts; I will give you places to walk among these who stand here. (Zech. 3:6-7) C. Joshua was functioning here in his high priestly capacity The high priest represented the nation before God on the Day of Atonement 1 Now the Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered profane fire before the Lord , and died; 2 and the Lord said to Moses: “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat. 3 “Thus Aaron shall come into the Holy Place: with the blood of a young bull as a sin offering, and of a ram as a burnt offering. 4 He shall put the holy linen tunic and the linen trousers on his body; he shall be girded with a linen sash, and with the linen turban he shall be attired. These are holy garments. Therefore he shall wash his body in water, and put them on. 5 And he shall take from the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats as a sin offering, and one ram as a burnt offering. 6 “Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house. 7 He shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 8 Then Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats: one lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat. 9 And Aaron shall bring the goat on which the Lord 's lot fell, and offer it as a sin offering. 10 But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord , to make atonement upon it, and to let it go as the scapegoat into the wilderness. (Lev. 16:1-10) As the sin of Joshua was removed, so the sin of Israel and the land will be removed In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness. 2 “It shall be in that day,” says the Lord of hosts, “ that I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered. I will also cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land. (Zech. 13:1-2) III. THE HEAVENLY SCENE A. Satan accused Joshua to the Lord of not being qualified for his leadership role in Israel 1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose (accuse) him. (Zech. 3:1)
11 Take the silver and gold, make an elaborate crown, and set it on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest. (Zech. 6:11) 2. Satan: Satan stood next to Joshua to accuse him, or to present a case against him, before the Lord. The Hebrew word satan means “the accuser.” 3. Accuse: Satan continually accuses God's people he can only accuse not condemn. 10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. (Rev. 12:10) 4. Angel of the Lord: Most conservative commentators believe that the Angel of the Lord is the preincarnate Christ, the second person of the Trinity. Zechariah had seen Him earlier that night in the first vision 11 So they answered the Angel of the Lord , who stood among the myrtle trees, and said, “We have walked to and fro throughout the earth, and behold, all the earth is resting quietly.” 12 Then the Angel of the Lord answered and said, “O Lord of hosts, how long will You not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which You were angry these seventy years?” The Angel is called “the Lord” 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! (Zech. 3:2a) 5. Standing before: The Lord called various ones to “stand before” Him to minister to Him. The tribe of Levi 8 At that time the Lord separated the tribe of Levi to bear the ark of the covenant of the Lord , to stand before the Lord to minister to Him and to bless in His name, to this day. 9 Therefore Levi has no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; the Lord is his inheritance, just as the Lord your God promised him. (Deut.10:8-9) The high priest 28 and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, “Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of my brother Benjamin, or shall I cease?” And the Lord said, “Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.” (Judg. 20:28) Elijah And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “ As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word.” (1 Kgs. 17:1) Elisha 14 And Elisha said, “ As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, surely were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you, nor see you. (2 Kgs. 3:14) B. The Lord did not receive Satan's accusation against Joshua, but rebuked Satan twice. 2 And the LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?” (Zech. 3:2) 2. Jesus' intercession for us is far stronger than Satan's accusations against us 33Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us...38I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities…39shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ. (Rom. 8:33-39) 3. Jesus stands as our advocate with the Father, for He became the propitiation for our sins. 1 If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins…
3 At the same time Tattenai the governor of the region beyond the River and Shethar-Boznai and their companions came to them and spoke thus to them: “Who has commanded you to build this temple and finish this wall?” (Ezra 5:3) Saying that he had no right to build the temple 1 Then the prophet Haggai and Zechariah…prophesied to the Jews…2 So Zerubbabel…and Jeshua…rose up and began to build the house of God…3 At the same time Tattenai the governor of the region beyond the River…spoke thus to them: “Who has commanded you to build this temple?”…7They sent a letter to him [King Darius] …8 Let it be known to the king that…the temple of the great God, which is being built with heavy stones, and timber is being laid in the walls…17Let the king send us his pleasure concerning this matter. (Ezra 5:1-17) D. And just as the Lord rebuked Satan for accusing Joshua in the spirit realm, so the Persian King Darius rebuked Tattenai for troubling Joshua, and then commanded him to give financial provision to Zerubbabel to build the temple 6 Now therefore, Tattenai…7 Let the work of this house of God alone…8 Let the cost be paid at the king's expense from taxes on the region beyond the River; this is to be given immediately to these men, so that they are not hindered…12I Darius issue a decree; let it be done diligently. (Ezra 6:6-12) F. Brand plucked from the fire: The Lord describes Joshua (and Israel) to Satan as a brand plucked from the fire. 2 Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?” (Zech. 3:2b) Israel has almost been destroyed several times in history, such as in 70 AD. It will happen again in the Tribulation. 8 And it shall come to pass in all the land,” Says the Lord , “ That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die, b ut one -third shall be left in it: (Zech. 13:8) 7 Alas! For that day is great, So that none is like it; 13 Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male Child. 14 But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. 15 So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. 16 But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. (Rev. 12:13-17) 2. Amos uses this same phrase to describe Israel being snatched as a half-burned stick in a time of divine discipline. 11I overthrew some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a firebrand plucked from the burning; yet you have not returned to Me… (Amos 4:11) 5. Today, God is raising up leaders, who, like Joshua, are like brands plucked from the fire. 18 Who is a God like You, Pardoning iniquity a nd passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? (Mic. 7:18) 35 You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; y our right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great. (Ps.18:35) G. Paul made this point, “Has God cast away His people? Certainly not!” I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. (Rom. 11:1)
3 Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the Angel. 4 Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity…and I will clothe you with rich robes.” 5 …I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head, and they put the clothes on him. And the Angel of the LORD stood by . (Zech. 3:3-5)
6 But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind,
8 And the intricately woven band of the ephod, which is on it, shall be of the same workmanship, made of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen. 9 “Then you shall take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel: (Ex. 28:8-9) 7 And he put the tunic on him, girded him with the sash, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him; and he girded him with the intricately woven band of the ephod, and with it tied the ephod on him. 8 Then he put the breastplate on him, and he put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastplate. 9 And he put the turban on his head. Also on the turban, on its front, he put the golden plate, the holy crown, as the Lord had commanded Moses. (Lev. 8:7-9) 10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord , 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Cor. 5: 17) 21He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Cor. 5:21) In the parable of the prodigal son, Jesus says that the father put the best robes on his son 22 “But the father said to his servants, Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. (Lk. 15:22) 10For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments. (Isa. 61:10)
4 Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.” (Zech. 3:4)
5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head, and they put the clothes on him…the Angel of the LORD stood by. (Zech. 3:5)
6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” (Ex. 19:6) The Lord will forgive, transform and equip Israel to fulfill her original calling to be a priestly nation 16 Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. (Ex. 19:16) 6 But you shall be named the priests of the Lord , 1. The Lord admonished Joshua to walk in wholehearted obedience 6 Then the Angel of the LORD admonished Joshua, saying, 7 “Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘If you will walk in My ways, and if you will keep My command [ perform My service], then you shall also judge My house, and likewise have charge of My courts; I will give you places to walk among these who stand here.'” (Zech. 3:6-7) 3. To keep My command: 15The priests…who kept charge of My sanctuary…shall stand before Me to offer to Me the fat and the blood [animal sacrifices]. B. The Lord promised to bless Joshua in three ways for responding in wholeheartedness. 7 Then you shall also judge My house, and likewise have charge of My courts; I will give you places to walk among these who stand here. (Zech. 3:7b) 2. You shall have charge of My courts: To have leadership in the Lord's court or temple (or the house of prayer). Jesus promised to make overcomers “a pillar in His temple” 12 He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name. (Rev. 3:12) 3. Places to walk among these who stand here: “These who stand here” refers to the angels who stood in God's presence 4 Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.” (Zech. 3:4) 4. Jesus promised that some of His servants would experience an open heaven. 51You shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending. (Jn. 1:51) VI. THE COMING MESSIAH AND HIS SALVATION (3:8-10) A. In this vision, Joshua and his leadership team stand as a prophetic picture to instruct and inspire others. They are a prophetic sign of the coming Messiah, and of His grace. 8 “Hear, O Joshua, the high priest, you and your companions who sit before you, for they are a wondrous sign; for behold, I am bringing forth My Servant the BRANCH. 9 For behold, the stone that I have laid before Joshua… (Zech. 3:8-9a) 8 “For behold, I am bringing forth My Servant the BRANCH. 9 For behold, the stone that I have laid before Joshua: upon the stone are seven eyes. Behold, I will engrave its inscription,” Says the LORD of hosts, “and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.” Paul used the combination of building and plant metaphors to describe life in the kingdom 9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, you are God's building. (1 Cor. 3:9) 19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. (Eph. 2:19-22) 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, (Eph. 3:17)
2 In that day the Branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious; 1 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, 5 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord , 15 ‘In those days and at that time I will cause to grow up to David 8 ‘Hear, O Joshua, the high priest, 12 Then speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, saying: “Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH! Jesus' work grows or branches out as His people are joined to Him as smaller branches 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. (Jn. 15:4-5)
9 For behold, the stone t hat I have laid before Joshua: Jesus is the foundation stone of Israel's salvation and the stone which she stumbled over 42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Jesus is the rock on which the Church is built 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. (Eph. 2:20-22) 9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; (1 Pet. 2:9) The stone, or rock, is a figure of God and the Messiah 4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; 15 “But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; 18 Of the Rock who begot you, you are unmindful, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; 3 For You are my rock and my fortress; 7 In God is my salvation and my glory; 26 He shall cry to Me, ‘You are my Father, 22 But the Lord has been my defense, Oh come, let us sing to the Lord ! 22 The stone which the builders rejected 13 The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow; 10 Because you have forgotten the God of your salvation, 6. Therefore thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; the wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. 45 Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold—the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure.” (Dan. 2:35, 45) 9 For behold, the stone 4 From him comes the cornerstone, 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. (Mt. 16:18) 42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected 33 As it is written: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, 4 For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. (1 Cor. 10:4b) 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone, (Eph. 2:20) 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion 7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who [ b ] are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected 8 and “A stone of stumbling They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. (1 Pet. 2:6-8) 3. Seven eyes: On the stone were seven eyes symbolizing Jesus' omniscience 6 And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. (Rev. 5:6) In Zechariah 4 we learn that the seven eyes on this stone are God's eyes going to and fro throughout the earth. 10 For who has despised the day of small things? 4. I will engrave its inscription: God will engrave on the stone a declaration related to His removing Israel's sin in one day 9 Behold, I will engrave its inscription,' 5. I will remove the iniquity: 9 ‘ And I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. (Zech. 3:9d) 26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion,
10 In that day,' says the Lord of hosts, 4 “Old men and old women shall again sit in the streets of Jerusalem…5 The streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets.” (Zech. 8:4-5)
