Session 12 Israel: Refined and Transformed (Zech. 13:7-14:21)
II. ISRAEL'S SUFFERING: THE REMNANT REFINED IN THE FIRE (13:7-14:2)
A The Lord forewarns Israel that her great destiny will include pain.
7“Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd [Jesus], against the Man who is My Companion,” says the LORD of hosts. “Strike the Shepherd [Jesus], and the sheep will be scattered; then I will turn My hand against the little ones. 8It shall come to pass in all the land,” says the LORD, “that two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die, but one-third shall be left in it: 9I will bring the one-third through the fire, will refine them as silver is refined, and test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘This is My people'; and each one will say, ‘The LORD is my God.'” (Zech. 13:7-9)
C This passage gives us insight into the siege of Jerusalem
2 “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem. (Zech. 12:2)
2 For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (Zech. 14:2)
It gives us insight into Jacob's trouble
7 Alas! For that day is great,
So that none is like it;
And it is the time of Jacob's trouble,
But he shall be saved out of it. (Jer. 30:7)
E. Awake O sword:
2. The worthless shepherd (Antichrist ) was struck by God
17 “Woe to the worthless shepherd,
Who leaves the flock!
A sword shall be against his arm
And against his right eye;
His arm shall completely wither,
And his right eye shall be totally blinded.” (Zech. 11:17)
But here it is the good shepherd who is struck.
3. The killing of the Messiah was seen as an act of man
10 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. 11 In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 And the land shall mourn, every family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14 all the families that remain, every family by itself, and their wives by themselves. (Zech. 12:10-14)
But also as an act of God
7 “Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd,
Against the Man who is My Companion,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
“Strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered;
Then I will turn My hand against the little ones. (Zech. 13:7)
What probably greatly perplexed Zechariah was that God Himself struck the good shepherd.
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. (Isa. 53:10)
23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; (Acts 2:23)
32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? (Rom. 8:32)
And yet Israel pierced Him
10 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. (Zech. 12:10)
F. God calls Jesus “My Shepherd,” “the Man,” and “My Companion”
7 “Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd,
Against the Man who is My Companion,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
“Strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered;
Then I will turn My hand against the little ones. (Zech. 13:7)
In these three descriptions we see the great mystery of the incarnation, God in the flesh
16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifested in the flesh,
Justified in the Spirit,
Seen by angels,
Preached among the Gentiles,
Believed on in the world,
Received up in glory. (1 Tim. 3:16)
G. The sheep will be scattered:
6 For I will no longer pity the inhabitants of the land,” says the Lord . “But indeed I will give everyone into his neighbor's hand and into the hand of his king. They shall attack the land, and I will not deliver them from their hand.”
9 Then I said, “I will not feed you. Let what is dying die, and what is perishing perish. Let those that are left eat each other's flesh.” 10 And I took my staff, Beauty, and cut it in two, that I might break the covenant which I had made with all the peoples. (Zech. 11:6, 9, 10)
Jesus also predicted the scattering of the Jews into all the nations until the times of the Gentiles were fulfilled, which will happen when He returns
41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” (Lk. 19:41-44)
24“They will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” (Lk. 21:24)
Jesus also quoted this verse in relationship to the scattering of His beloved disciples
31 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written:
‘I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'
56 But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.”
Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled. (Mt. 26:31, 56)
27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written:
‘I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered.'
50 Then they all forsook Him and fled. (Mk 14:27, 50)
H. I will turn My hand against the little ones:
7“The sheep will be scattered; then I will turn My hand against the little ones.” (Zech. 13:7)
I In using the positive interpretation, the “little ones” are seen as the “humble ones” (or those who make themselves little), in a way that is similar to the poor of the flock.
7 So I fed the flock for slaughter, in particular the poor of the flock. I took for myself two staffs: the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bonds; and I fed the flock.
11 So it was broken on that day. Thus the poor of the flock, who were watching me, knew that it was the word of the Lord . (Zech. 11:7, 11)
Jesus spoke of the godly remnant when quoting this passage in reference to His disciples
31Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' 32But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.” (Mt. 26:31-32)
32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. (Jn. 16:32)
J. One-third:
“Behold, I send My messenger,
And he will prepare the way before Me.
And the Lord, whom you seek,
Will suddenly come to His temple,
Even the Messenger of the covenant,
In whom you delight.
Behold, He is coming,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
2 “But who can endure the day of His coming?
And who can stand when He appears?
For He is like a refiner's fire
And like launderers' soap.
3 He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver;
He will purify the sons of Levi,
And purge them as gold and silver,
That they may offer to the Lord
An offering in righteousness.
4 “Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem
Will be pleasant to the Lord ,
As in the days of old,
As in former years.
5 And I will come near you for judgment;
I will be a swift witness
Against sorcerers,
Against adulterers,
Against perjurers,
Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans,
And against those who turn away an alien—
Because they do not fear Me,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
6 “For I am the Lord , I do not change;
Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob. (Malachi 3:1-6)
8“It shall come to pass in all the land,” says the LORD, “that two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die, but one-third shall be left in it: 9I will bring the one-third through the fire, will refine them as silver is refined, and test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘This is My people'; and each one will say, ‘The LORD is my God.'” (Zech. 13:8-9)
L. Jerusalem will be temporarily captured and half its people will be taken captive
1Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, and your spoil will be divided in your midst. 2For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; the city shall be taken, the houses rifled, and the women ravished. Half of the city shall go into captivity, but the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (Zech. 14:1-2)
2. Spoil divided in your midst:
4 In that day,” says the Lord , “I will strike every horse with confusion, and its rider with madness; I will open My eyes on the house of Judah, and will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. 5 And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my strength in the Lord of hosts, their God.' 6 In that day I will make the governors of Judah like a firepan in the woodpile, and like a fiery torch in the sheaves; they shall devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left, but Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place—Jerusalem.
7 “The Lord will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall not become greater than that of Judah. 8 In that day the Lord will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them in that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the Angel of the Lord before them. 9 It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. (Zech. 12:4-9)
III. JESUS RETURNS AS KING: JERUSALEM IS HIS CAPITAL CITY (14:3-21)
A. Jesus will return as the king of Israel to deliver her from her enemies.
3Then the LORD will go forth and fight against those nations, as He fights in the day of battle. 4And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives…
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south. 5Then you shall flee through My mountain valley, for the mountain valley shall reach to Azal. Yes, you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah…The LORD my God will come, and all the saints with You. (Zech. 14:3-5)
This is the point where the surprising events prophesied in Zechariah 12 take place.
10 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. (Zech. 12:10)
1 The Lord will fight:
13 And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord , which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” (Ex. 14:13-14)
14 And there has been no day like that, before it or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man; for the Lord fought for Israel. (Josh. 10:14)
3 You have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations because of you, for the Lord your God is He who has fought for you. (Josh. 23:3)
15 And the Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot. (Judg. 4:15)
15 And he said, “Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's. (2 Chr. 20:15)
2. You shall flee:
Now when they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples;
23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. (Mark 11:1, 23)
3. My mountain valley:
22 So the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. (Ex. 14:22)
B Jesus' kingship will be announced by miracles of darkness, light, and living water
7It shall be one [unique] day which is known to the LORD—neither day nor night. But at evening time it shall happen that it will be light. 8In that day it shall be that living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern sea [Dead Sea] and half of them toward the western sea [Mediterranean Sea]; in both summer and winter it shall occur. (Zech. 14:7-8)
Zechariah describes Jerusalem as the new capital of the world and the epicenter from which “garden-of-Eden-type blessings” will spread progressively to the whole world in the Millennium. He highlights two issues—the healing waters and the mysterious light at night
5 then the Lord will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a covering. (Isa. 4:5)
26 Moreover the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun,
And the light of the sun will be sevenfold,
As the light of seven days,
In the day that the Lord binds up the bruise of His people
And heals the stroke of their wound. (Isa. 30:26)
1 No light: It will be a day of gloom with utter darkness
6It shall come to pass in that day that there will be no light; the lights will diminish. (Zech. 14:6)
Darkness shall come on the Antichrist's global empire
10…the throne of the Beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness… (Rev. 16:10)
The light of the sun, moon, and stars will be darkened
10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations
Will not give their light;
The sun will be darkened in its going forth,
And the moon will not cause its light to shine. (Isa. 13:10)
10 The earth quakes before them,
The heavens tremble;
The sun and moon grow dark,
And the stars diminish their brightness.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord . (Joel 2:10, 31)
15 The sun and moon will grow dark,
And the stars will diminish their brightness. (Joel 3:15)
29“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” (Mt. 24:29)
24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; (Mk. 13:24)
25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; (Lk. 21:25)
19 I will show wonders in heaven above
And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord . (Acts 2:19-20)
2 One day:
7 It shall be one day
Which is known to the Lord —
Neither day nor night.
But at evening time it shall happen
That it will be light. (Zech. 14:7)
3 Living water:
1 Then he brought me back to the door of the temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the front of the temple faced east; the water was flowing from under the right side of the temple, south of the altar. 2 He brought me out by way of the north gate, and led me around on the outside to the outer gateway that faces east; and there was water, running out on the right side.
3 And when the man went out to the east with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles. 4 Again he measured one thousand and brought me through the waters; the water came up to my knees. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through; the water came up to my waist. 5 Again he measured one thousand, and it was a river that I could not cross; for the water was too deep, water in which one must swim, a river that could not be crossed. 6 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this? ” Then he brought me and returned me to the bank of the river.
7 When I returned, there, along the bank of the river, were very many trees on one side and the other. 8 Then he said to me: “This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the valley, and enters the sea. When it reaches the sea, its waters are healed. 9 And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes. 10 It shall be that fishermen will stand by it from En Gedi to En Eglaim; they will be places for spreading their nets. Their fish will be of the same kinds as the fish of the Great Sea, exceedingly many. 11 But its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be given over to salt. 12 Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail.
They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.” (Ezek. 47:1-12)
Its waters will flow east to the Dead Sea and west into the Mediterranean Sea
4 There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,
The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High. (Ps. 46:4)
9 You visit the earth and water it,
You greatly enrich it;
The river of God is full of water;
You provide their grain,
For so You have prepared it. (Ps. 65:9)
C Jesus will reign from Jerusalem as the King of kings over all the earth
9The LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be—“The LORD is one,” and His name one . (Zech. 14:9)
16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:
KING OF KINGS AND
LORD OF LORDS.
(Rev. 19:16)
All the kings of the earth will worship and serve Him
11 Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him;
All nations shall serve Him. (Ps. 72:11)
15 So the nations shall fear the name of the Lord ,
And all the kings of the earth Your glory. (Ps. 102:15)
4 All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O Lord ,
When they hear the words of Your mouth. (Ps. 138:4)
11 Kings of the earth and all peoples;
Princes and all judges of the earth; (Ps. 148:11)
11 For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down,
My name shall be great among the Gentiles;
In every place incense shall be offered to My name,
And a pure offering;
For My name shall be great among the nations,”
Says the Lord of hosts. (Mal. 1:11)
17At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the LORD, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem. (Jer. 3:17)
IV. THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING (14:10)
A. The topography of Jesus' global capital city will be drastically changed
10All the land shall be turned into a plain from Geba [northern Judah] to Rimmon south of Jerusalem [southern Judah]. Jerusalem shall be raised up and inhabited in her place from Benjamin's Gate [north wall] to the place of the First Gate [north-east corner] and the Corner Gate [north-west corner], and from the Tower of Hananeel [north wall] to the king's winepresses [south wall]. 11The people shall dwell in it; and no longer shall there be utter destruction, but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited. (Zech. 14:10-11)
1. A plain:
2In the latter days the mountain of the LORD's house [the temple] shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills… (Isa. 2:2)
3 Safely inhabited: Jerusalem will be the safest city in all history
11 The people shall dwell in it;
And no longer shall there be utter destruction,
But Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited. (Zech. 14:11)
B. The Lord will bring total destruction to Israel's enemies.
12This shall be the plague with which the LORD will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, and their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths…13In that day a great panic from the LORD will be among them. Everyone will…raise his hand against his neighbor's hand; 14Judah also will fight at Jerusalem. And the wealth of all the surrounding nations shall be gathered together: gold, silver, and apparel in great abundance. 15Such also shall be the plague on the horse and the mule, on the camel and the donkey. (Zech. 14:12-15)
1 All the people:
Behold, the day of the Lord is coming,
And your spoil will be divided in your midst.
2 For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (Zech. 14:1-2)
2 Plague:
12 And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem:
Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet,
Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets,
And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths. (Zech. 14:12)
The plague will kill many of their animals
15 Such also shall be the plague
On the horse and the mule,
On the camel and the donkey,
And on all the cattle that will be in those camps.
So shall this plague be. (Zech. 14:15)
4 Wealth: Israel will reverse the earlier situation by taking the spoil of the Gentiles
2 For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (Zech. 14:2)
C The Gentiles shall be converted and unified with Israel in worshiping Jesus
16And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. 17And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, on them there will be no rain. 18If the family of Egypt will not come up and enter in, they shall have no rain; they shall receive the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations who do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. 19This shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. (Zech. 14:16-19)
1 Everyone who is left: The unsaved survivors of the Tribulation (who refused to worship the Antichrist) who stood against Jerusalem will be radically converted to become worshipers of the God of Israel.
3 And it shall come to pass that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy—everyone who is recorded among the living in Jerusalem. (Isa. 4:3)
20 And it shall come to pass in that day
That the remnant of Israel,
And such as have escaped of the house of Jacob,
Will never again depend on him who defeated them,
But will depend on the Lord , the Holy One of Israel, in truth. (Isa. 10:20)
11 It shall come to pass in that day
That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time
To recover the remnant of His people who are left,
From Assyria and Egypt,
From Pathros and Cush,
From Elam and Shinar,
From Hamath and the islands of the sea. (Isa. 11:11)
5 “And now the Lord says,
Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him,
So that Israel is gathered to Him
(For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord ,
And My God shall be My strength),
6 Indeed He says,
‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob,
And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles,
That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.' (Isa. 49:5-6)
8 Thus says the Lord :
“As the new wine is found in the cluster,
And one says, ‘Do not destroy it,
For a blessing is in it,'
So will I do for My servants' sake,
That I may not destroy them all. (Isa. 65:8)
19 I will set a sign among them; and those among them who escape I will send to the nations: to Tarshish and Pul and Lud, who draw the bow, and Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands afar off who have not heard My fame nor seen My glory. And they shall declare My glory among the Gentiles. (Isa. 66:19)
2 Thus says the Lord :
“The people who survived the sword
Found grace in the wilderness—
Israel, when I went to give him rest.” (Jer. 31:2)
38 I will purge the rebels from among you, and those who transgress against Me; I will bring them out of the country where they dwell, but they shall not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord .
39 “As for you, O house of Israel,” thus says the Lord God : “Go, serve every one of you his idols—and hereafter—if you will not obey Me; but profane My holy name no more with your gifts and your idols. 40 For on My holy mountain, on the mountain height of Israel,” says the Lord God , “there all the house of Israel, all of them in the land, shall serve Me; there I will accept them, and there I will require your offerings and the firstfruits of your sacrifices, together with all your holy things. 41 I will accept you as a sweet aroma when I bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you have been scattered; and I will be hallowed in you before the Gentiles. 42 Then you shall know that I am the Lord , when I bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for which I raised My hand in an oath to give to your fathers. (Ezek. 20:38-42)
36 Then the nations which are left all around you shall know that I, the Lord , have rebuilt the ruined places and planted what was desolate. I, the Lord , have spoken it, and I will do it. ” (Ezek. 36:36)
9 “For surely I will command,
And will sift the house of Israel among all nations,
As grain is sifted in a sieve;
Yet not the smallest grain shall fall to the ground.
10 All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword,
Who say, ‘The calamity shall not overtake nor confront us.' (Amos 9:9-10)
32 And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.
For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance,
As the Lord has said,
Among the remnant whom the Lord calls. (Joel 2:32)
14 all the families that remain, every family by itself, and their wives by themselves. (Zech. 12:14)
8 And it shall come to pass in all the land,”
Says the Lord ,
“ That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die,
But one -third shall be left in it: (Zech. 13:8)
2 To worship the King: All the Gentile survivors of the Tribulation will annually go up to Jerusalem to worship Jesus as King and to participate in the Feast of Tabernacles
16 And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. (Zech. 14:16)
Earlier, Zechariah prophesied of the nations coming to Jerusalem to pray
11 “Many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and they shall become My people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you. (Zech. 2: 11)
20 “Thus says the Lord of hosts:
‘Peoples shall yet come,
Inhabitants of many cities;
21 The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying,
“Let us continue to go and pray before the Lord ,
And seek the Lord of hosts.
I myself will go also.”
22 Yes, many peoples and strong nations
Shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem,
And to pray before the Lord .'
23 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘In those days ten men from every language of the nations shall grasp the sleeve of a Jewish man, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.” (Zech. 8:20-23)
4. Not come up or enter in: The Lord requires all to enter in to worshiping Jesus
18 If the family of Egypt will not come up and enter in, they shall have no rain; they shall receive the plague with which the Lord strikes the nations who do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. (Zech. 14:18)
Any family or nation who neglects to do this shall have no rain for their crops
17 And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, on them there will be no rain. (Zech. 14:17)
6 No rain:
23 And your heavens which are over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you shall be iron. 24 The Lord will change the rain of your land to powder and dust; from the heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed. (Deut. 28:23-24)
D Israel will be the first entire nation to walk holy before God in every area of life.
20In that day “HOLINESS TO THE LORD” shall be engraved on the bells of the horses. The pots in the LORD's house shall be like the bowls before the altar. 21Yes, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holiness to the LORD of hosts…In that day there shall no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts. (Zech. 14:20-21)
3 God's original purpose for Israel was that they live as a holy nation of priests
6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” (Ex. 19:6)
2“I am zealous for Zion with great zeal; with great fervor I am zealous for her…3I will
return to Zion, and dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth, The Mountain of the LORD of hosts, The Holy Mountain.” (Zech. 8:2-3)
