Session 11 Israel: Saved and Cleansed (Zech. 12:1-13:6)
I. INTRODUCTION
C. The complete fulfillment of most of the events in the six chapters of Zechariah will occur at the time of Jesus' second coming. In Zechariah 12-14, the phrase “in that day” occurs 18 times, indicating the end of the age.
3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.
4 In that day ,” says the Lord , “I will strike every horse with confusion, and its rider with madness; I will open My eyes on the house of Judah, and will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.
6 In that day I will make the governors of Judah like a firepan in the woodpile, and like a fiery torch in the sheaves; they shall devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left, but Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place—Jerusalem.
8 In that day the Lord will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them in that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the Angel of the Lord before them.
9 It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
11 In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. (Zech. 12:3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11)
1 “ In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.
2 “It shall be in that day,” says the Lord of hosts, “ that I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered. I will also cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land.
4 “And it shall be in that day that every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; they will not wear a robe of coarse hair to deceive. (Zech. 13:1, 2, 4)
1 Behold, the day of the Lord is coming,
And your spoil will be divided in your midst.
4 And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Which faces Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,
From east to west,
Making a very large valley;
Half of the mountain shall move toward the north
And half of it toward the south.
6 It shall come to pass in that day
That there will be no light;
The lights will diminish.
8 And in that day it shall be
That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem,
Half of them toward the eastern sea
And half of them toward the western sea;
In both summer and winter it shall occur.
9 And the Lord shall be King over all the earth.
In that day it shall be—
“The Lord is one,”
And His name one.
13 It shall come to pass in that day
That a great panic from the Lord will be among them.
Everyone will seize the hand of his neighbor,
And raise his hand against his neighbor's hand;
20 In that day “HOLINESS TO THE LORD” shall be engraved on the bells of the horses. The pots in the Lord 's house shall be like the bowls before the altar. 21 Yes, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holiness to the Lord of hosts. Everyone who sacrifices shall come and take them and cook in them. In that day there shall no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the Lord of hosts. (Zech. 14:1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 13, 20, 21)
G. The Jewish people will be both gathered to the land and driven from it
6 “I will strengthen the house of Judah,
And I will save the house of Joseph.
I will bring them back,
Because I have mercy on them.
They shall be as though I had not cast them aside;
For I am the Lord their God,
And I will hear them.
7 Those of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man,
And their heart shall rejoice as if with wine.
Yes, their children shall see it and be glad;
Their heart shall rejoice in the Lord .
8 I will whistle for them and gather them,
For I will redeem them;
And they shall increase as they once increased.
9 “I will sow them among the peoples,
And they shall remember Me in far countries;
They shall live, together with their children,
And they shall return.
10 I will also bring them back from the land of Egypt,
And gather them from Assyria.
I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon,
Until no more room is found for them.
11 He shall pass through the sea with affliction,
And strike the waves of the sea:
All the depths of the River shall dry up.
Then the pride of Assyria shall be brought down,
And the scepter of Egypt shall depart.
12 “So I will strengthen them in the Lord ,
And they shall walk up and down in His name,”
Says the Lord . (Zech. 10:6-12)
For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (Zech. 14:2)
H. Israel's main crisis is not with Islam or other anti-Semitic nations, rather it is with God. Her crisis is rooted in the fact that God loves Israel, and yet the majority of Israel does not love God. He will not violate their free will, but will use the great difficulty to lead them to His great love.
I. Zechariah's end-time message is politically incorrect, offending Christians, Jews, and Muslims.
Zechariah's most offensive message to Israel is that 2/3 of them will be killed
8 And it shall come to pass in all the land,”
Says the Lord , “ That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die,
But one -third shall be left in it: (Zech. 13:8)
Zechariah's most offensive message to Islam is that all will worship the God of Israel
16 And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. (Zech. 14:16)
II. ALL THE NATIONS WILL GATHER AGAINST ISRAEL (12:1-3)
A The Lord introduces this oracle by reminding us that He has the power to create the heavens, the earth, and all humanity
1 The burden…of the LORD against Israel. Thus says the LORD, who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him: (Zech. 12:1 )
B The two main events in this oracle are the siege of Jerusalem
2 “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem. 3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it. (Zech. 12:2-3)
Behold, the day of the Lord is coming,
And your spoil will be divided in your midst.
2 For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (Zech. 14:1-2)
The return of the Messiah, leading to Israel's salvation and the transformation of the whole earth
10 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. (Zech. 12:10)
3 Then the Lord will go forth
And fight against those nations,
As He fights in the day of battle.
9 And the Lord shall be King over all the earth.
In that day it shall be—
“The Lord is one,”
And His name one. (Zech. 14:3, 9)
D The end-time siege around Jerusalem
2 “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples [nations], when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem. 3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples [nations]; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.” (Zech. 12:2-3)
This same siege is described again
(Zech. 14:2 See above )
E The leaders of the nations will work together under the Antichrist's leader to lay siege against Jerusalem and Judah
The Great Tribulation
15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened. (Mt. 24:15-22)
This siege will last for 3½ years
2 But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months. 3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.” (Rev. 11:2-3)
6 Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days. (Rev. 12:6)
5 And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. (Rev. 13:5)
F The siege begins with the nations that surround Jerusalem
(Zech. 12:2 See above )
It escalates to all nations
(Zech. 12:3 See above )
(Zech. 14:2 See above )
G Two metaphors warn the nations of their danger—cup of drunkenness and heavy stone
(Zech. 12:2-3 See above )
H. The Lord Himself is gathering the armies of all the ungodly nations to stand against Israel
2 “I will gather all nations…I will enter into judgment with them there [Jerusalem].”
12 “Let the nations be wakened, and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; For there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. (Joel 3: 12)
2 “For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem.” (Zech. 14:2)
8 “My determination is to gather the nations to My assembly of kingdoms [at Jerusalem] , to pour on them My indignation…all the earth shall be devoured with…My jealousy.” (Zeph. 3:8)
4 I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. (Ezek. 38:4)
2 and I will turn you around and lead you on, bringing you up from the far north, and bring you against the mountains of Israel. (Ezek. 39:2)
I. Satan also works to draw the nations to Jerusalem but with evil purposes
14For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty…16And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon. (Rev. 16:14-16)
J. Gentile world leaders will accept the leadership of the “worthless shepherd” (Antichrist) as Israel did in Zechariah 11.
15 And the Lord said to me, “Next, take for yourself the implements of a foolish shepherd. 16 For indeed I will raise up a shepherd in the land who will not care for those who are cut off, nor seek the young, nor heal those that are broken, nor feed those that still stand. But he will eat the flesh of the fat and tear their hooves in pieces.
17 “Woe to the worthless shepherd,
Who leaves the flock!
A sword shall be against his arm
And against his right eye;
His arm shall completely wither,
And his right eye shall be totally blinded.” (Zech. 11:15-17)
M. The accumulated impact of many social, economic, religious, and political dynamics will create a scenario where everyone will be forced to “make a decision” to stand for or against Jesus and Jerusalem.
14Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! The day of the LORD is near… (Joel 3:14)
III. MILITARY VICTORY: ISRAEL IS UNIFIED AND ANOINTED LIKE DAVID (ZECH. 12:4-9)
A The Lord will release confusion and a spirit of insanity on the Gentile armies
4 In that day…I will strike every horse with confusion, and its rider with madness; I will open My eyes on the house of Judah, and will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. (Zech. 12:4)
28 The Lord will strike you with madness and blindness and confusion of heart. (Deut. 28:28)
1 Panic : Zechariah prophesied a great panic coming on these Gentile armies
13A great panic from the LORD will be among them. Everyone will seize the hand of his neighbor, and raise his hand against his neighbor's hand… (Zech. 14:13)
2 Open My eyes: The Lord will open His eyes on the house of Judah.
8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye. (Ps. 32:8)
18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who hope in His mercy, (Ps. 33:18)
B The Lord will supernaturally empower the small Israeli army as a weapon in His hand.
5 “And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my strength in the LORD of hosts, their God.' 6 In that day I will make the governors of Judah like a firepan in the woodpile, and like a fiery torch in the sheaves; they shall devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left, but Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place—Jerusalem.” (Zech. 12:5-6)
C The Lord will empower the soldiers who live in Judah first, to create unity with Jerusalem
7 The LORD will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall not become greater than that of Judah. (Zech. 12:7)
All this will work together to help end the long-standing in-fighting among the Jewish leadership
14 Then I cut in two my other staff, Bonds, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel. (Zech. 11:14)
Zechariah earlier prophesied that the “house of Judah” in the south
3 “My anger is kindled against the shepherds,
And I will punish the goatherds.
For the Lord of hosts will visit His flock,
The house of Judah,
And will make them as His royal horse in the battle. (Zech. 10:3)
The “house of Joseph,”
6 “I will strengthen the house of Judah,
And I will save the house of Joseph.
I will bring them back,
Because I have mercy on them.
They shall be as though I had not cast them aside;
For I am the Lord their God,
And I will hear them. (Zech. 10:6)
“Ephraim,” in the north
7 Those of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man,
And their heart shall rejoice as if with wine.
Yes, their children shall see it and be glad;
Their heart shall rejoice in the Lord . (Zech. 10:7)
D. Zechariah prophesies that the Lord will anoint Israeli soldiers, as He did David.
8 The LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them in that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the Angel of the LORD before them. (Zech. 12:8)
Note, the Lord will empower Israel's army to resist the Antichrist even before Jesus returns
13 For I have bent Judah, My bow,
Fitted the bow with Ephraim,
And raised up your sons, O Zion,
Against your sons, O Greece,
And made you like the sword of a mighty man.” (Zech. 9:13)
1 Like David:
1“My anger is kindled against the shepherds,
And I will punish the goat herds.
For the Lord of hosts will visit His flock,
The house of Judah,
And will make them as His royal horse in the battle.
4 From him comes the cornerstone,
From him the tent peg,
From him the battle bow,
From him every ruler together.
5 They shall be like mighty men,
Who tread down their enemies
In the mire of the streets in the battle.
They shall fight because the Lord is with them,
And the riders on horses shall be put to shame.
6 “I will strengthen the house of Judah,
And I will save the house of Joseph.
I will bring them back,
Because I have mercy on them.
They shall be as though I had not cast them aside;
For I am the Lord their God,
And I will hear them.
7 Those of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man,
And their heart shall rejoice as if with wine.
Yes, their children shall see it and be glad;
Their heart shall rejoice in the Lord . (Zech. 10:3-7)
Like the Angel of the Lord:
19 And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. (Ex. 14:19)
20 “Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared. (Ex. 23:20)
34 Now therefore, go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, My Angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit for punishment, I will visit punishment upon them for their sin.” (Ex. 32:34)
2 And I will send My Angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanite and the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite.
14 And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
15 Then he said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.
22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. (Ex. 33:2, 14-15, 22)
9 Then Achish answered and said to David, “I know that you are as good in my sight as an angel of God; nevertheless the princes of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.' (1 Sam. 29:9)
27 And he has slandered your servant to my lord the king, but my lord the king is like the angel of God. Therefore do what is good in your eyes. (2 Sam. 19:27)
E. Jesus will destroy all the nations.
9 “It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.” (Zech. 12:9)
F. All kings will be gathered with their armies
19I saw the beast [Antichrist], the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him [Jesus]… 21The rest [all the kings] were killed with the sword…from the mouth of Him…
(Rev. 19:19-21)
2 I will also gather all nations,
And bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
And I will enter into judgment with them there
On account of My people, My heritage Israel,
Whom they have scattered among the nations;
They have also divided up My land.
12 “Let the nations be wakened, and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
For there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. (Joel 3:2, 12)
8 “Therefore wait for Me,” says the Lord ,
“Until the day I rise up for plunder;
My determination is to gather the nations
To My assembly of kingdoms,
To pour on them My indignation,
All My fierce anger;
All the earth shall be devoured
With the fire of My jealousy. (Zeph. 3:8)
It will be the only time in history when all the kings of the earth will be together in the same city. Jesus will kill all of them and replace all governments of the earth in one great event
21 And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh. (Rev. 19:21)
5 The Lord is at Your right hand;
He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath.
6 He shall judge among the nations,
He shall fill the places with dead bodies,
He shall execute the heads of many countries. (Ps. 110:5-6)
6 Therefore the curse has devoured the earth,
And those who dwell in it are desolate.
Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned,
And few men are left.
21 It shall come to pass in that day
That the Lord will punish on high the host of exalted ones,
And on the earth the kings of the earth. (Isa. 24:6, 21)
24 “And they shall go forth and look
Upon the corpses of the men
Who have transgressed against Me.
For their worm does not die,
And their fire is not quenched.
They shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.” (Isa. 66:24)
G Jesus will defeat the Antichrist in the sight of all nations
20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. (Rev. 19:20)
8 …lawless one…whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth. (2 Thes. 2:8)
H The leaders of Jerusalem will receive Jesus, a Jewish man, as their messianic King. Jesus will establish His throne in Jerusalem
28 So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (Mt. 19:28)
31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. (Mt. 25:31)
17 “At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the Lord , and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the Lord , to Jerusalem. No more shall they follow the dictates of their evil hearts. (Jer. 3:17)
7 Lift up your heads, O you gates [Jerusalem]...And the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. (Ps. 24:7-8)
IV. ISRAEL'S NATIONAL SALVATION (12:10-14)
B. Zechariah described Israel's national repentance and conversion
10 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. 11 In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 And the land shall mourn, every family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14 all the families that remain, every family by itself, and their wives by themselves. (Zech. 12:10-14)
His focus changed from physical to spiritual deliverance
1 “Now it shall come to pass, when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where the Lord your God drives you, 2 and you return to the Lord your God and obey His voice, according to all that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart and with all your soul, 3 that the Lord your God will bring you back from captivity, and have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the nations where the Lord your God has scattered you. 4 If any of you are driven out to the farthest parts under heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you. 5 Then the Lord your God will bring you to the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it. He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers. 6 And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.
7 “Also the Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you.
8 And you will again obey the voice of the Lord and do all His commandments which I command you today. 9 The Lord your God will make you abound in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your land for good. For the Lord will again rejoice over you for good as He rejoiced over your fathers, 10 if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. (Deut. 30:1-10)
1. Look on Me:
3 Suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. 4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” 5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And the Lord said, “I am Jesus…” 6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” (Acts 9:3-6)
2. Both Jesus and John elaborated on Zechariah's prophecy that Israel would look on Jesus.
They both prophesied that all Jews and Gentiles would see Him
30“All the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” (Mt. 24:30)
7 He is coming with clouds, and every eye [Jews and Gentiles] will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. (Rev. 1:7)
3. Jesus told the Jewish leaders who killed Him that they would see Him.
62“You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” (Mk. 14:62)
4.The Lord will be “seen” over His people
14Then the Lord will be seen over them, and His arrow will go forth like lightning. The Lord will blow the trumpet, and go with whirlwinds from the south. (Zech. 9:14)
In the context of Israel being raised up as mighty men
13 For I have bent Judah, My bow, Fitted the bow with Ephraim,
And raised up your sons, O Zion, Against your sons, O Greece,
And made you like the sword of a mighty man.” (Zech. 9:13)
5. Mourning:
26 O daughter of my people, Dress in sackcloth
And roll about in ashes!
Make mourning as for an only son, most bitter lamentation;
For the plunderer will suddenly come upon us. (Jer. 6:26)
10 I will turn your feasts into mourning,
And all your songs into lamentation;
I will bring sackcloth on every waist,
And baldness on every head;
I will make it like mourning for an only son,
And its end like a bitter day. (Amos 8:10)
7. The Spirit of grace:
3 For I will pour water on him who is thirsty,
And floods on the dry ground;
I will pour My Spirit on your descendants,
And My blessing on your offspring; (Isa. 44:3)
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward
That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord .
32 And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.
For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance,
As the Lord has said,
Among the remnant whom the Lord calls. (Joel 2:28-32)
C. Israel's national repentance and mourning is described graphically.
11“There shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12And the land shall mourn, every family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14all the families that remain, every family by itself, and their wives by themselves.” (Zech. 12:11-14)
1 Like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon:
29 In his days Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt went to the aid of the king of Assyria, to the River Euphrates; and King Josiah went against him. And Pharaoh Necho killed him at Megiddo when he confronted him.
30 Then his servants moved his body in a chariot from Megiddo, brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own tomb. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, anointed him, and made him king in his father's place. (2 Kgs. 23:29-30)
22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself so that he might fight with him, and did not heed the words of Necho from the mouth of God. So he came to fight in the Valley of Megiddo.
23 And the archers shot King Josiah; and the king said to his servants, “Take me away, for I am severely wounded.” 24 His servants therefore took him out of that chariot and put him in the second chariot that he had, and they brought him to Jerusalem. So he died, and was buried in one of the tombs of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.
25 Jeremiah also lamented for Josiah. And to this day all the singing men and the singing women speak of Josiah in their lamentations. They made it a custom in Israel; and indeed they are written in the Laments. (2 Chr. 35:22-25)
1 House of David and Nathan:
14 Now these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, (2 Sam. 5:14)
31 the son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattathah, the son of Nathan, the son of David, (Lk. 3:31)
2 House of Levi and Shimei:
18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei. (Num. 3:18)
V. ISRAEL'S NATIONAL CLEANSING (13:1-6)
B Israel's national cleansing is from sin, idols, false prophets, and the unclean spirit.
1 “In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness. 2 It shall be in that day…that I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered. I will also cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land.” (Zech. 13:1-2)
C. Jesus will open a fountain for the total cleansing of Israel, spiritually and physically (Ezek. 47)
Jesus will remove idolatry, false prophets, and the unclean spirit that was in the land, related to the Abomination of Desolation being in Jerusalem
15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), (Mt. 24:15)
Satan will be thrown into prison, and the Antichrist and False Prophet into the lake of fire Rev. 19-20.
1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while. (Rev. 20:1-3)
D. This new cleansing will cause false prophets to be afraid and put to shame.
3 “If anyone still prophesies, then his father and mother who begot him will say to him, ‘You shall not live, because you have spoken lies in the name of the LORD.' And his father and mother who begot him shall thrust him through when he prophesies. 4 And it shall be in that day that every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; they will not wear a robe of coarse hair to deceive. 5 But he will say, ‘I am no prophet, I am a farmer; for a man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.' 6 And one will say to him, ‘What are these wounds between your arms?' Then he will answer, ‘Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.'” (Zech. 13:3-6)
E The zeal for purity will be so great in that day that even the parents of a false prophet will put him to death as the Law commanded.
6 “If your brother, the son of your mother, your son or your daughter, the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,' which you have not known, neither you nor your fathers, 7 of the gods of the people which are all around you, near to you or far off from you, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth, 8 you shall not consent to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him or conceal him; 9 but you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. (Deut. 13:6-9)
F Prophets were known for making wounds in a prophetic frenzy to stir up the spirit realm, to help them receive demonically-inspired prophecies
28 You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord . (Lev. 19:28)
5 ‘They shall not make any bald place on their heads, nor shall they shave the edges of their beards nor make any cuttings in their flesh. (Lev. 21:5)
1 You are the children of the Lord your God; you shall not cut yourselves nor shave the front of your head for the dead. (Deut. 14:1)
28 So they cried aloud, and cut themselves, as was their custom, with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them. (1 Kgs. 18:28)
6 Both the great and the small shall die in this land. They shall not be buried; neither shall men lament for them, cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them. (Jer. 16:6)
5 that certain men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, eighty men with their beards shaved and their clothes torn, having cut themselves, with offerings and incense in their hand, to bring them to the house of the Lord . (Jer. 41:5)
37 “For every head shall be bald, and every beard clipped;
On all the hands shall be cuts, and on the loins sackcloth— (Jer. 48:37)
