Session #1 - Overview of the Signs of the Times - Bible Verse HandBook
Session #1: 'Overview of the times'
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Many today neglect the subject of the biblical signs
of the times
1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking
him to show them a sign from heaven.2 He replied, “When evening
comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’
3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky
is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance
of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 A
wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will
be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them
and went away. (Mt. 16:1-4)
32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its
twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is
near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it[e]
is near, right at the door. 34 Truly I tell you, this generation
will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass
away.
36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the
angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was
in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the
ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the
flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the
coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will
be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with
a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what
day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of
the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,
he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken
into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will
come at an hour when you do not expect him. (Mt. 24:32-44)
41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it
42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day
what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your
eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build
an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every
side. 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children
within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because
you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
(Lk. 19:41-44)
34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with
carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will
close on you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those
who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch,
and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen,
and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
(Lk. 21:34-36)
II. THREE CATEGORIES OF SIGNS
11“There will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.”
(Lk. 21:11)
III. JESUS IDENTIFIED 12 NEGATIVE SIGN TRENDS
5“Many will come…saying, ‘I am the Christ,’
and will deceive many…7For nation will rise against nation
[Gk. ethnos, or ethnic conflict], and kingdom against kingdom [economic
warfare]. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes
in various places…9and you will be hated by all nations for
My name’s sake. 10And then many will…hate one another…12And
because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.”
(Mt. 24:4-12)
11“There will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven…25in
the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress
of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring…”
(Lk. 21:11, 25)
IV. SIGN EVENTS AND TRENDS RELATED TO ISRAEL
A. Resettlement of Israel:
8“In the latter years you [Antichrist] will come
into the land of those [Israel]…gathered from many
people [nations] on the mountains of Israel, which had long been
desolate.”
(Ezek. 38:8)
6“In that day…Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in
her own place Jerusalem.” (Zech. 12:6)
2 I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of
Jehoshaphat.
There I will put them on trial for what they did to my inheritance,
my people Israel,
because they scattered my people among the nations and divided up
my land.
12 “Let the nations be roused; let them advance into the Valley
of Jehoshaphat,
for there I will sit to judge all the nations on every side. (Joel
3:2, 12)
3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against
her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations.
All who try to move it will injure themselves. (Zech. 12:3)
2 I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it;
the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped.
Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people
will not be taken from the city. (Zech.14:2)
24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to
all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until
the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. (Lk. 21:24)
B. The rebuilt temple in Jerusalem with sacrifices:
15 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the
abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the
prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— (Mt.
24:15)
14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’
standing where i] does not belong—let the reader understand—then
let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. (Mk. 13:14)
4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is
called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s
temple, proclaiming himself to be God. (2 Thes. 2:4)
1. I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, “Go
and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers.
2 But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has
been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for
42 months . (Rev. 11:1-2)
12 It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf,
and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast,
whose fatal wound had been healed. 13 And it performed great signs,
even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full
view of the people. 14 Because of the signs it was given power to
perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants
of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the
beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second
beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast,
so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship
the image to be killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and
small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their
right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy
or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast
or the number of its name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate
the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[e] That
number is 666. (Rev.13:12-18)
26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will
be put to death and will have nothing.[g] The people of the ruler
who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will
come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations
have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one
‘seven. In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put
an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set
up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is
decreed is poured out on him. (Dan. 9:26-27)
31 “His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple
fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set
up the abomination that causes desolation. (Dan.11:31)
11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and
the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be
1,290 days. (Dan.12:11)
C. Salvation of Israel:
39“You shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed
is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’” (Mt.
23:39)
D. Jerusalem as center of world politics and controversy:
3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against
her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations.
All who try to move it will injure themselves. (Zech. 12:3)
2I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; the
city shall be taken…Half of the city shall go into captivity,
but the remnant…shall not be cut off from the city. (Zech.
14:2)
2 I will gather all nations
and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat.
There I will put them on trial
for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel,
because they scattered my people among the nations
and divided up my land.
12 “Let the nations be roused;
let them advance into the Valley of Jehoshaphat,
for there I will sit to judge all the nations on every side. (Joel
3:2, 12)
Therefore wait for me,”
declares the LORD,
“for the day I will stand up to testify.
I have decided to assemble the nations,
to gather the kingdoms
and to pour out my wrath on them—
all my fierce anger.
The whole world will be consumed
by the fire of my jealous anger. (Zeph. 3:8)
20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you
will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are
in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and
let those in the country not enter the city. 22 For this is the
time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.
23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and
nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath
against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be
taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled
on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
(Lk. 21:20-24)
E. Two conflicting trends:
24“They [Israel] will fall by the edge of the sword,
and be led away captive into all nations. Jerusalem will be trampled
by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”
(Lk. 21:24)
6“I will…give You [Jesus]as a covenant to the people
[Israel]…7to bring out prisoners from the prison, those who
sit in darkness from the prison house…22But this [Israel]
is a people robbed and plundered; all of them are snared in holes,
and they are hidden in prison houses.” (Isa. 42:6-7,
22)
11But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation
has come to the Gentiles. (Rom. 11:11)
V. SIGN TRENDS RELATED TO THE NATIONS
A. Global government:
41 Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked
clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet
it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw
iron mixed with clay. 42 As the toes were partly iron and partly
clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle.
(Dan. 2:41-42)
7 “After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there
before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and
very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured
its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different
from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.
20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about
the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the
horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes
and a mouth that spoke boastfully.
24 The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom.
After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones;
he will subdue three kings. (Dan. 7:7, 20, 24)
3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon
with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads.
(Rev. 12:3)
The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming
out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns
on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. (Rev.
13:1)
3 Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness.
There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered
with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns.
7 Then the angel said to me: “Why are you astonished? I will
explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides,
which has the seven heads and ten horns.
12 “The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet
received a kingdom, but who for one hour will receive authority
as kings along with the beast. 13 They have one purpose and will
give their power and authority to the beast.
16 The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute.
They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her
flesh and burn her with fire. (Rev. 17:3, 7, 12-13, 16)
B. Globalization: (Rev. 17-18)
C. Knowledge and travel:
4“Seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run
to and fro[unprecedented travel], and knowledge shall increase[information
age].” (Dan. 12:4)
D. Internet technology:
16He causes all…to receive a mark on their right hand or
on their foreheads, 17and that no one may buy or sell except one
who has the mark or the name of the beast.
(Rev. 13:16-17)
VI. POSITIVE SIGN TRENDS
A. Gospel preached to all nations:
14“This gospel…will be preached…to all the nations[ethnos]
and then the end will come.” (Mt. 24:14)
B. Bridal identity:
17The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come!” (Rev.
22:17)
“1 At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins
who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five
of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took
their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones,
however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom
was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the
bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8
The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil;
our lamps are going out.’
9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be
enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and
buy some for yourselves.’
10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the
bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him
to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’
they said, ‘open the door for us!’
12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t
know you.’
13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day
or the hour. (Mt. 25:1-13)
C. Global prayer and worship movement:
17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the
one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty
come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water
of life. (Rev. 22:17)
4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s
people, went up before God from the angel’s hand. (Rev.
8:4)
7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who
cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I
tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However,
when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
(Lk. 18:7-8)
6 I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never
be silent day or night.
You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, 7 and give him
no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of
the earth. (Isa. 62:6-7)
13 And in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing
in Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship
the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem. (Isa.27: 13)
10 Sing to the LORD a new song,
his praise from the ends of the earth,
you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it,
you islands, and all who live in them.
11 Let the wilderness and its towns raise their voices;
let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice.
Let the people of Sela sing for joy;
let them shout from the mountaintops.
12 Let them give glory to the LORD
and proclaim his praise in the islands.
13 The LORD will march out like a champion,
like a warrior he will stir up his zeal;
with a shout he will raise the battle cry
and will triumph over his enemies. (Isa. 42:10-13)
8 Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices;
together they shout for joy.
When the LORD returns to Zion,
they will see it with their own eyes. (Isa. 52:8)
32 And everyone who calls
on the name of the LORD will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
there will be deliverance,
as the LORD has said,
even among the survivors
whom the LORD calls. (Joel 2:32)
1Gather together, gather yourselves together,
you shameful nation,
2 before the decree takes effect
and that day passes like windblown chaff,
before the LORD’s fierce anger
comes upon you,
before the day of the LORD’s wrath
comes upon you.
3 Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land,
you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness, seek humility;
perhaps you will be sheltered
on the day of the LORD’s anger. (Zeph. 2:1-3)
17 He will respond to the prayer of the destitute;
he will not despise their plea.
18 Let this be written for a future generation,
that a people not yet created may praise the LORD:
19 “The LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high,
from heaven he viewed the earth,
20 to hear the groans of the prisoners
and release those condemned to death.” (Ps. 102:17-20)
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure.
7 May there be peace within your walls
and security within your citadels.”
8 For the sake of my family and friends,
I will say, “Peace be within you.”
9 For the sake of the house of the LORD our God,
I will seek your prosperity. (Ps. 122:6-9)
10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants
of Jerusalem a spirit[a] of grace and supplication. They will look
on[b] me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him
as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as
one grieves for a firstborn son (Zech. 12:10)
D. Outpouring of the Spirit:
17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Acts 2:17-21)
VII. NEGATIVE SIGN TRENDS
A. Harlot Babylon worldwide religion:
2 With her the kings of the earth committed adultery, and the inhabitants
of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries.”
3 Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness.
There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered
with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. 4 The
woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with
gold, precious stones and pearls.
She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things
and the filth of her adulteries. 5 The name written on her forehead
was a mystery:
BABYLON THE GREAT
THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES
AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
6 I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s
holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus. (Rev.
17:2-6)
B. Lawlessness abounds:
12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will
grow cold, (Mt. 24:12)
23 “In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become
completely wicked, a fierce-looking king, a master of intrigue,
will arise. (Dan. 8:23)
1. Violence (days of Noah):
11 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full
of violence. 12 God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all
the people on earth had corrupted their ways. 13 So God said to
Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth
is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy
both them and the earth. (Gen. 6:12-13)
26“As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the
days of the Son of Man… 28Likewise as it was also in the days
of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold.” (Luke
17:26-28)
3 They cast lots for my people
and traded boys for prostitutes;
they sold girls for wine to drink. (Joel 3:3)
2. Immorality (days of Lot):
21 Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their
sexual immorality or their thefts. (Rev. 9:21)
8 A second angel followed and said, “‘Fallen! Fallen
is Babylon the Great,’ which made all the nations drink the
maddening wine of her adulteries.” (Rev. 14:8)
1One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said
to me, “Come, I will show you the punishment of the great
prostitute, who sits by many waters. 2 With her the kings of the
earth committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth were
intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries.”
3 Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness.
There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered
with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns.
4 The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering
with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in
her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries.
(Rev. 17:1-4)
9 “When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with
her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will
weep and mourn over her. 10 Terrified at her torment, they will
stand far off and cry:
“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,
you mighty city of Babylon!
In one hour your doom has come!’ (Rev. 18: 9-10)
1After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude
in heaven shouting:
“Hallelujah!
Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,
2 for true and just are his judgments.
He has condemned the great prostitute
who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.
He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.” (Rev.
19:1-2)
1The Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart
from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits…3forbidding
to marry. (1 Tim. 4:1-3)
