Session #2: Biblical signs of the times related to Israel
II. THE STATE OF ISRAEL, JERUSALEM,AND THE RETURN OF THE
JEWISH PEOPLE
A. The State of Israel:
8“Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall
the earth be made to give birth in one day? Or shall a nation be
born at once?…Zion…gave birth to her children.”
(Isa. 66:8)
8“In the latter years you [Antichrist] will come into the
land of those [Israel] brought back…and gathered from many
people [nations] on the mountains of Israel, which had long been
desolate.” (Ezek. 38:8)
B. Jerusalem:
6“In that day…Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in
her own place—Jerusalem.” (Zech. 12:6)
C. The people returning to the land:
14“Therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the
Lord, “that it shall no more be said, ‘The Lord lives
who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt,’
15but, ‘The Lord lives who brought up the children of Israel
from the land of the north and from all the lands where He had driven
them.’ For I will bring them back into their land.”
(Jer. 16:14-15)
14“I will bring back the captives of My people Israel.”
(Amos 9:14)
24“For I will…gather you out of all countries, and
bring you into your own land. 25Then I will…cleanse you from
all your filthiness…26I will give you a new heart…34The
desolate land shall be tilled instead of lying desolate…37I
will increase their men like a flock.” (Ezek. 36:24-37)
III. THE TEMPLE, SABBATH LAWS, HEBREW LANGUAGE, AND MILITARY
A. Temple:
15 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the
abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the
prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— (Mt.
24:15)
14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’[a]
standing where it does not belong—let the reader understand—then
let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. (Mk. 13:14)
4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is
called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s
temple, proclaiming himself to be God. (2 Thes. 2:4)
was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, “Go and
measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. 2
But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been
given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42
months. (Rev. 11:1-2)
11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two
horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.
12 It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf,
and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast,
whose fatal wound had been healed. 13 And it performed great signs,
even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full
view of the people. 14 Because of the signs it was given power to
perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants
of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the
beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second
beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast,
so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship
the image to be killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and
small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their
right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy
or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast
or the number of its name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate
the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number
is 666. (Rev. 13:11-18)
26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will
be put to death and will have nothing.[g] The people of the ruler
who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will
come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations
have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one
‘seven. In the middle of the ‘seven’[i] he will
put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will
set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that
is decreed is poured out on him. (Dan. 9:26-27)
31 “His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple
fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set
up the abomination that causes desolation. (Dan. 11:31)
11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and
the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be
1,290 days. (Dan. 12:11)
B. Sabbath:
15“When you see the abomination of desolation…16then
let those who are in Judea flee…20Pray that your flight may
not be in winter or on the Sabbath.” (Mt. 24:15-20)
15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image
of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all
who refused to worship the image to be killed. 16 It also forced
all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive
a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they
could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name
of the beast or the number of its name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate
the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[e] That
number is 666. (Rev. 13:15-18)
C. Hebrew:
9Then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, that they
all may call on the name of the LORD, to serve Him with one accord.
(Zeph. 3:9)
D. Military:
13 I will bend Judah as I bend my bow and fill it with Ephraim.
I will rouse your sons, Zion, against your sons, Greece,
and make you like a warrior’s sword. (Zech. 9:13)
3 “My anger burns against the shepherds,
and I will punish the leaders;
for the LORD Almighty will care
for his flock, the people of Judah,
and make them like a proud horse in battle.
4 From Judah will come the cornerstone,
from him the tent peg,
from him the battle bow,
from him every ruler.
5 Together they[a] will be like warriors in battle
trampling their enemy into the mud of the streets.
They will fight because the LORD is with them,
and they will put the enemy horsemen to shame.
6 “I will strengthen Judah
and save the tribes of Joseph.
I will restore them
because I have compassion on them.
They will be as though
I had not rejected them,
for I am the LORD their God
and I will answer them.
7 The Ephraimites will become like warriors,
and their hearts will be glad as with wine.
Their children will see it and be joyful;
their hearts will rejoice in the LORD. (Zech. 10:3-7)
6“In that day I will make the governors of Judah like a firepan
in the woodpile…they shall devour all the surrounding peoples…8In
that day the Lord will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the
one who is feeble among them in that day shall be like David.”
(Zech. 12:6-8)
11 But now many nations
are gathered against you.
They say, “Let her be defiled,
let our eyes gloat over Zion!”
12 But they do not know
the thoughts of the LORD;
they do not understand his plan,
that he has gathered them like sheaves to the threshing floor.
13 “Rise and thresh, Daughter Zion,
for I will give you horns of iron;
I will give you hooves of bronze,
and you will break to pieces many nations.”
You will devote their ill-gotten gains to the LORD,
their wealth to the Lord of all the earth. (Mic. 4:11-13)
IV. THE SALVATION OF ISRAEL
A. Jesus will not forcibly take the kingship over Israel,
39“For I say to you, you [the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem]
shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes
in the name of the LORD!’” (Mt. 23:37-39)
B. Israel’s leaders are the official representatives
of that national covenant with God.
19“Repent…be converted [Israel] that your sins may
be blotted out…20that He may send Jesus…21whom heaven
must receive [retain]until the times of restoration…”
(Acts 3:19-21)
6This is Jacob, the generation of those who seek Him…7Lift
up your heads, O you gates…be lifted up, you everlasting doors!
And the King of glory shall come in.
(Ps. 24:6-7)
D.We are watching the amazing fulfillment of the Lord’s
prophetic promise
6“I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they shall
never hold their peace day or night…7And give Him no rest
till He…makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” (Isa.
62:6-7)
V. WORLD CONTROVERSY, PERSECUTION AND ANTI-SEMITISM FROM
THE NATIONS
A. The Jewish prophets foretold that Jerusalem would be
persecuted
3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against
her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations.
All who try to move it will injure themselves.
9 On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack
Jerusalem. (Zech. 12:3, 9)
2 I will gather all nations
and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat.[b]
There I will put them on trial
for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel,
because they scattered my people among the nations
and divided up my land.
12 “Let the nations be roused;
let them advance into the Valley of Jehoshaphat,
for there I will sit to judge all the nations on every side. (Joel
3:2, 12)
8 Therefore wait for me,” declares the LORD,
“for the day I will stand up to testify.
I have decided to assemble the nations,
to gather the kingdoms
and to pour out my wrath on them—
all my fierce anger.
The whole world will be consumed
by the fire of my jealous anger. (Zeph. 3:8)
20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you
will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are
in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and
let those in the country not enter the city. 22 For this is the
time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.
23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and
nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath
against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be
taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled
on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
(Lk. 21:20-24).
2I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; the
city shall be taken…Half of the city shall go into captivity,
but the remnant…shall not be cut off from the city. (Zech.
14:2)
3…Jerusalem…though all nations of the earth are gathered
against it [Jerusalem].
(Zech. 12:3)
B. The most dramatic fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy
2“The time is coming that whoever kills you will think that
he offers God service.” (Jn. 16:2)
C. The Lord said that He would first “send”
fishermen .
15“ForI will bring them back into their land…16“Behold,
I will send for many fishermen,” says the Lord, “and
they shall fish them; and afterward I will send for many hunters,
and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and
out of the holes of the rocks.” (Jer. 16:15-16)
VI. THE BATTLE FOR JERUSALEM
A. The battle for Jerusalem will be the decisive battle
to end the Armageddon campaign
2I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem. (Zech.
14:2)
B. The battle for Jerusalem is a spiritual, political,
and military battle for the control of Jerusalem.
11Behold, a white horse. He [Jesus] who sat on him…16has…a
name written: KING OF KINGS …19And I saw the beast [Antichrist],
the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make
war against Him…20Then the beast was captured and the false
prophet…20:1Then I saw an angel…2He laid hold of…Satan,
and bound him for a thousand years. (Rev. 19:11-20:2)
C. Satan’s strategy is to seek to exploit Jesus’
prophecy
39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed
is he who comes in the name of the Lord. (Matthew 23:39
)
D. Satan wants to destroy the Jewish
13When the dragon [Satan] saw that he had been cast to
the earth, he persecuted the woman [remnant of Israel]…15The
serpent spewed water…like a flood after the woman, that he
might cause her to be carried away by the flood [persecution]…17The
dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with
the rest of her offspring [the Church], who…have
the testimony of Jesus. (Rev. 12:13-17)
8 In the whole land,” declares the LORD,
“two-thirds will be struck down and perish;
yet one-third will be left in it.
9 This third I will put into the fire;
I will refine them like silver
and test them like gold.
They will call on my name
and I will answer them;
I will say, ‘They are my people,’
and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.’” (Zech.
13:8-9)
F. The city of Jerusalem shall be taken, and half its population
shall go into captivity
2“For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
the city shall be taken…half of the city shall go into captivity,
but the remnant of the people shall not be cut off.” (Zech.
14:2)
G. Two conflicting trends:
6“I will…give You [Jesus] as a covenant to
the people [Israel]…7to bring out prisoners from
the prison, those who sit in darkness from the prison house…22But
this [Israel] is a people robbed and plundered; all of them are
snared in holes, and they are hidden in prison houses.” (Isa.
42:6-7, 22)
H. Scripture describes an aspect of Israel’s persecution
18 Let this be written for a future generation,
that a people not yet created may praise the LORD:
19 “The LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high,
from heaven he viewed the earth,
20 to hear the groans of the prisoners
and release those condemned to death.”
21 So the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion
and his praise in Jerusalem
22 when the peoples and the kingdoms
assemble to worship the LORD. (Ps. 102:18-22)
13 And in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing
in Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship
the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem. (Isa. 27:13)
6 “I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness;
I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you and will make you
to be a covenant for the people
and a light for the Gentiles,
7 to open eyes that are blind,
to free captives from prison
and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.
13 The LORD will march out like a champion,
like a warrior he will stir up his zeal;
with a shout he will raise the battle cry
and will triumph over his enemies.
22 But this is a people plundered and looted,
all of them trapped in pits
or hidden away in prisons.
They have become plunder,
with no one to rescue them;
they have been made loot,
with no one to say, “Send them back.”
23 Which of you will listen to this
or pay close attention in time to come? (Isa. 42:6-7, 13,
22-23)
8 This is what the LORD says:
“In the time of my favor I will answer you,
and in the day of salvation I will help you;
I will keep you and will make you
to be a covenant for the people,
to restore the land
and to reassign its desolate inheritances,
9 to say to the captives, ‘Come out,’
and to those in darkness, ‘Be free!’ (Isa. 49:8-9)
1The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a]
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn, (Isa. 61:1-2)
3 The days are coming,’ declares the LORD, ‘when I
will bring my people Israel and Judah back from captivity[a] and
restore them to the land I gave their ancestors to possess,’
says the LORD.” (Jer. 30:3)
25 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will
now restore the fortunes of Jacob and will have compassion on all
the people of Israel, and I will be zealous for my holy name. 26
They will forget their shame and all the unfaithfulness they showed
toward me when they lived in safety in their land with no one to
make them afraid. 27 When I have brought them back from the nations
and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will
be proved holy through them in the sight of many nations. 28 Then
they will know that I am the LORD their God, for though I sent them
into exile among the nations, I will gather them to their own land,
not leaving any behind. 29 I will no longer hide my face from them,
for I will pour out my Spirit on the people of Israel, declares
the Sovereign LORD.” (Ezek. 39:25-29)
11 “In that day
“I will restore David’s fallen shelter—
I will repair its broken walls
and restore its ruins—
and will rebuild it as it used to be,
12 so that they may possess the remnant of Edom
and all the nations that bear my name,[e]”
declares the LORD, who will do these things.
13 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD,
“when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman
and the planter by the one treading grapes.
New wine will drip from the mountains
and flow from all the hills,
14 and I will bring my people Israel back from exile.[f]
“They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them.
They will plant vineyards and drink their wine;
they will make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 I will plant Israel in their own land,
never again to be uprooted
from the land I have given them,”
says the LORD your God. (Amos 9:11-15)
1“In those days and at that time,
when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,
2 I will gather all nations
and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat.[b]
There I will put them on trial
for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel,
because they scattered my people among the nations
and divided up my land. (Joel 3:1-2)
6 “In that day,” declares the LORD, “I will gather
the lame;
I will assemble the exiles
and those I have brought to grief. (Mic. 4:6)
19 At that time I will deal
with all who oppressed you.
I will rescue the lame;
I will gather the exiles.
I will give them praise and honor
in every land where they have suffered shame.
20 At that time I will gather you;
at that time I will bring you home.
I will give you honor and praise
among all the peoples of the earth
when I restore your fortunes
before your very eyes,”
says the LORD. (Zeph. 3:19-20)
9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River[b] to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.
12 Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope;
even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.
13 I will bend Judah as I bend my bow
and fill it with Ephraim.
I will rouse your sons, Zion,
against your sons, Greece,
and make you like a warrior’s sword. (Zech. 9:9-13)
8 In the whole land,” declares the LORD,
“two-thirds will be struck down and perish;
yet one-third will be left in it. (Zech. 13:8)
2 I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it;
the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped.
Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people
will not be taken from the city. (Zech. 14:2)
43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes
and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did
not look after me.’ (Mt. 25:43)
24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to
all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until
the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. (Lk. 21:24)
I. Salvation and persecution:
8“It shall come to pass in all the land…that two-thirds
in it shall be cut off and die, but one-third shall be left in it:
9I will bring the one-third through the fire…They will call
on My name.” (Zech. 13:8-9)
15So the four angels…were released to kill a third of mankind
[Gentiles]. (Rev. 9:15)
VII. THE TRUE CHURCH WILL STAND WITH ISRAEL
A. The battle for Jerusalem will be one issue used to perfect
the Church.
27…that He might present her to Himself a glorious church,
not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should
be holy and without blemish[compromise]. (Eph. 5:27)
B. Gentile believers will provoke Israel to jealousy to
know Jesus
19 Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says,“I
will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make
you angry by a nation that has no understanding.” (Rom.
10:19)
11…to provoke them [Israel] to jealousy, salvation has come
to the Gentiles.
(Rom. 11:11)
D. God calls the Church to stand with Israel
1“Comfort, yes, comfort My people!” says your God.
2“Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her, that her
warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned.” (Isa.
40:1-2)
11 The LORD has made proclamation
to the ends of the earth:
“Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your Savior comes!
See, his reward is with him,
and his recompense accompanies him.’” (Isa.
62:11)
6 I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem;
they will never be silent day or night.
You who call on the LORD,
give yourselves no rest,
7 and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem
and makes her the praise of the earth (Isa. 62:6-7)
7 This is what the LORD says:
“Sing with joy for Jacob;
shout for the foremost of the nations.
Make your praises heard, and say,
‘LORD, save your people,
the remnant of Israel.’
8 See, I will bring them from the land of the north
and gather them from the ends of the earth.
Among them will be the blind and the lame,
expectant mothers and women in labor;
a great throng will return.
9 They will come with weeping;
they will pray as I bring them back.
I will lead them beside streams of water
on a level path where they will not stumble,
because I am Israel’s father,
and Ephraim is my firstborn son.
10 “Hear the word of the LORD, you nations;
proclaim it in distant coastlands:
‘He who scattered Israel will gather them
and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’ (Jer.
31:7-10)
The Sheep and the Goats
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels
with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations
will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one
from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33
He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come,
you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom
prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry
and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me
something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I
needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after
me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when
did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something
to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or
needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in
prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever
you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine,
you did for me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from
me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil
and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat,
I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger
and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe
me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you
hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in
prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did
not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the
righteous to eternal life.” (Mt. 25:31-46)
11 Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery?
Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has
come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious. (Rom. 11:11)
13 When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he
pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 The
woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might
fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would
be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s
reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river,
to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But
the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the
river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon
was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest
of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold
fast their testimony about Jesus. (Rev. 12:13-17)
E. The Church must take a stand
7Thus says the Lord: “Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout
among the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say,
‘O Lord save Your people, the remnant of Israel!’…
10Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the isles
afar off, and say, ‘He who scattered Israel will gather him,
and keep him as a shepherd does his flock.’” (Jer.
31:7-10)
VIII. DIFFERENT RESPONSES OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE IN THE LAND
OF ISRAEL
A. Some will be supernaturally protected:
32 And everyone who calls
on the name of the LORD will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
there will be deliverance,
as the LORD has said,
even among the survivors
whom the LORD calls (Joel 2:32)
16 The LORD will roar from Zion
and thunder from Jerusalem;
the earth and the heavens will tremble.
But the LORD will be a refuge for his people,
a stronghold for the people of Israel. (Joel 3:16)
10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants
of Jerusalem a spirit[a] of grace and supplication. They will look
on[b] me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him
as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as
one grieves for a firstborn son. (Zech. 12:10)
3 Those who are left in Zion, who remain in Jerusalem, will be
called holy, all who are recorded among the living in Jerusalem.
(Isa. 4:3)
17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;
it will be holy, and Jacob will possess his inheritance. (Obad.
1:17)
B. Fleeing from the land:
15 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the
abomination that causes desolation,’[a] spoken of through
the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then
let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. (Mt. 24:15,
16)
C. Apostate:
8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all
whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life,
the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world. (Rev.
13:8)
D. Killed:
8 In the whole land,” declares the LORD,
“two-thirds will be struck down and perish;
yet one-third will be left in it. (Zech. 13:8)
E. Imprisoned:
2 I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it;
the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped.
Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people
will not be taken from the city (Zech. 14:2)
7 to open eyes that are blind,
to free captives from prison
and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.
22 But this is a people plundered and looted,
all of them trapped in pits
or hidden away in prisons.
They have become plunder,
with no one to rescue them;
they have been made loot,
with no one to say, “Send them back.” (Isa.
42:7, 22)
“The LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high,
from heaven he viewed the earth,
20 to hear the groans of the prisoners
and release those condemned to death.”
21 So the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion
and his praise in Jerusalem
22 when the peoples and the kingdoms
assemble to worship the LORD. (Ps. 102:19-22)
