Session #6 The Birth Pains: 15 Trends (Mt. 24:1-14)

I. REVIEW

3When they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction[Great Tribulation] comes upon them, as labor painsupon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. (1 Thes. 5:3)

27Then he [Antichrist] shall confirm a covenant with many [nations and Israel] for one week [7 years]; but in the middle of the week [3½ years] he shall bring an end to sacrifice [in the temple] (Dan. 9:27)

D. Haggai prophesied five areas that the Lord will shake

6“…I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; 7and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations [Jesus], and I will fill this temple with glory,” says the Lord of hosts…22I will destroy the strength of the Gentile kingdoms. (Hag. 2:6-7, 22)

E. Birth Pains: Jesus identified 10 trends as the beginning of birth pains

4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.
(Mt. 24:4-8)

5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. (Mk. 13:5-8)

8 He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. 9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”
10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. (Lk. 21:8-11)

II. OVERVIEW OF THE BIRTH PAINS: 15 TRENDS

A. Believers are to recognize when these things begin in the generation Jesus returns

28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
32 “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. (Lk. 21:28, 32)

Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. See that you are not troubled…7For nation will rise against nation [ethnic conflict], and kingdom against kingdom [economic warfare]. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes…8All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Mt. 24:4-8)

• Social anarchy(24:10)
• False prophets(24:11)
• Lawlessness abounding (24:12)
• Love growing cold (24:12)

9“They will…kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10And then many will be offended, will betray… and will hate one another. 11Then many false prophets will rise up…12And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold…” (Mt. 24:9-12)

III. THE BEGINNING OF BIRTH PAINS: 10 TRENDS

A. Deception and false christs:

4Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 5For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ’ [God’s anointed], and will deceive many.

(Lk. 21:11)

H. Commotions:

9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” (Lk. 21:9)

I. Fearful sights as great signs from heaven:

11There will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven…25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken (Lk. 21:11, 25-26)

IV. THE FINAL SEVEN YEARS: 5 TRENDS

A. Persecution and hatred of believers

9They will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake. (Mt. 24:9)

3. The pressures against believers will result in many falling away from the faith.

9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. (Mt. 24:9-13)

3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness[a] is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
(2 Thes. 2:3)

The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. (1 Tim. 4:1-2)

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.

2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. (2 Tim. 3:1-7)

3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. (2 Tim. 4:3-5)

But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. (2 Pet. 2:1-3)

B. Social anarchy:

10 Then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another.
(Mt. 24:10)

C. False prophets:

10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. (2 Thes. 2:10)

11Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. (Mt. 24:11)

D. Lawlessness abounding:

12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, (Mt. 24:12)

21 Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts. (Rev. 9:21)

18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” (Rev. 14:18)

23 “In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a fierce-looking king, a master of intrigue, will arise. (Dan. 8:23)

10 Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.
(Dan. 12:10)

The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. (1 Tim. 4:1-2)

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.
(Rom. 1:24-28)

E. Encouragements:

13But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
(Mt. 24:13-14)
