Session 9 The End-Time Outpouring of the Spirit (Joel 2:28-32)
28“It shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. 29And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. 30And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood and fire and pillars of smoke. 31The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. 32And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the remnant whom the LORD calls.” (Joel 2:28-32)
I. THE PROMISE OF AN OUTPOURING OF THE SPIRIT
A. Afterward:
After the people turn to God with prayer and fasting in corporate wholeheartedness
12 “Now, therefore,” says the Lord ,
“Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”
13 So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness;
And He relents from doing harm.
14 Who knows if He will turn and relent,
And leave a blessing behind Him—
A grain offering and a drink offering
For the Lord your God?
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion,
Consecrate a fast,
Call a sacred assembly;
16 Gather the people,
Sanctify the congregation,
Assemble the elders,
Gather the children and nursing babes;
Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber,
And the bride from her dressing room.
17 Let the priests, who minister to the Lord ,
Weep between the porch and the altar;
Let them say, “Spare Your people, O Lord ,
And do not give Your heritage to reproach,
That the nations should rule over them.
Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?' ” (Joel 2:12-17)
God manifests His zeal and compassion
18 Then the Lord will be zealous for His land,
And pity His people. (Joel 2:18)
In material blessings (agricultural blessing and military victory)
19 The Lord will answer and say to His people,
“Behold, I will send you grain and new wine and oil,
And you will be satisfied by them;
I will no longer make you a reproach among the nations.
20 “But I will remove far from you the northern army,
And will drive him away into a barren and desolate land,
With his face toward the eastern sea
And his back toward the western sea;
His stench will come up,
And his foul odor will rise,
Because he has done monstrous things.”
21 Fear not, O land;
Be glad and rejoice,
For the Lord has done marvelous things!
22 Do not be afraid, you beasts of the field;
For the open pastures are springing up,
And the tree bears its fruit;
The fig tree and the vine yield their strength.
23 Be glad then, you children of Zion,
And rejoice in the Lord your God;
For He has given you the former rain faithfully,
And He will cause the rain to come down for you—
The former rain,
And the latter rain in the first month.
24 The threshing floors shall be full of wheat,
And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.
25 “So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten,
The crawling locust,
The consuming locust,
And the chewing locust,
My great army which I sent among you.
26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
And praise the name of the Lord your God,
Who has dealt wondrously with you;
And My people shall never be put to shame.
27 Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel:
I am the Lord your God
And there is no other.
My people shall never be put to shame. (Joel 2:19-27)
And spiritual blessings (pouring out His Spirit)
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward
That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord .
32 And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.
For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance,
As the Lord has said,
Among the remnant whom the Lord calls. (Joel 2:28-32)
B. Jesus promised that if His disciples tarried in prayer, the Spirit would endue them with power.
49“Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” (Lk. 24:49)
8“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” (Acts 1:8)
C. After ten days, on the Feast of Pentecost, the Spirit came on them with power.
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 17 for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.”
18 (Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out. 19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)
20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms:
‘Let his dwelling place be desolate,
And let no one live in it' ; and, ‘Let another take his office.'
21 “Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”
23 And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25 to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” 26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 1:12-2:4)
They were probably expecting the Joel 2:28 breakthrough of the Spirit at that time, since Jesus had recently promised it
49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” (Lk. 24:49)
Peter explained this visitation of the Spirit as being that which was prophesied by Joel
14Peter…said to them, “Men of Judea…let this be known to you…15these are not drunk, as you suppose…16but this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel.” (Acts 2:14-16)
D. Jesus and John the Baptist had prayed fervently for God's blessing to be released, as did Anna who prayed for sixty years
37 and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. (Lk. 2:37)
II. THE DOWN PAYMENT OF JOEL'S PROPHECY OCCURRED AT PENTECOST
28“I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and daughters shall prophesy…” (Joel 2:28)
D. Peter understood that Joel's prophecy would only be completely fulfilled when Jesus returned to earth to restore all things during the millennial kingdom.
19“Repent…that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, 20and that He may send Jesus Christ [Jesus' second coming]… 21whom heaven must receive [retain] until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.” (Acts 3:19-21)
III. THE TIMING IN JOEL'S PROPHECY: THE LAST DAYS
A. Peter said that the outpouring of the Spirit would happen in the last days
The New Testament writers used the phrase “in the last days” five times.
In Acts 2:17 and Hebrews 1:2, “the last days” is used to refer to the first century.
14Peter…said to them, “Men of Judea…15these are not drunk, as you suppose…16But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17‘It shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit…'” (Acts 2:14-17)
1God…in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2has in these last days spoken to us by His Son… (Heb. 1:1-2)
1But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come… (2 Tim. 3:1)
3Knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days… (2 Pet. 3:3)
3Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. (Jas. 5:3)
B. Joel prophesied a worldwide outpouring of the Spirit.
28“And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh…29I will pour out My Spirit in those days…31the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD…” (Joel 2:28-31)
C. In studying the options for what afterwards refers to, it is best to understand it in the context of Joel's call to fasting and prayer
(Joel 2:12-17 See Session #1 Bible Verse Handbook )
D. Some commentators link the word afterwards to the preceding passage
(Joel 2:21-27 See Session #8 Bible Verse Handbook )
When Joel prophesied the agricultural blessings and the defeat of the northern enemy
(Joel 2:20 See Session #1 Bible Verse Handbook )
God promised Israel in the Millennium. It will be a time in which Israel is never put to shame again
26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, And praise the name of the Lord your God,
Who has dealt wondrously with you; And My people shall never be put to shame.
27 Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel:
I am the Lord your God And there is no other.
My people shall never be put to shame. (Joel 2:26-27)
E. Another timing indicator is given when Joel twice used the phrase “in those days”
29“I will pour out My Spirit in those days…3:1For behold, in those days and at that time, when I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem, 2I will also gather all nations…I will enter into judgment with them there.” (Joel 2:29-3:2)
IV. THE INHERITANCE OF THE BODY OF CHRIST: ALL WILL PROPHESY
28“I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.” (Joel 2:28)
31For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged. (1 Cor. 14:31)
B. The only qualifier that Joel made in this all-inclusive promise to “all flesh” is the phrase “My servants”
29“On My men servants and on My maid servants I will pour out My Spirit…” (Joel 2:29)
C. Paul quoted Joel 2:32 and then applied it universally to all believers.
12There is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord…is rich to all who call on Him. 13For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” (Rom. 10:12-13)
V. THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY
10“Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” (Rev. 19:10)
B. Functioning in the prophetic anointing is very important today, but it will be an issue of life and death in the Great Tribulation.
31But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way. (1 Cor. 12:31)
1Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. (1 Cor. 14:1)
C. We seek to prophesy because it opens us up to the other gifts of the Spirit.
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” (Lk. 1:15-17)
D. Prophetic dreams will equip the saints to discern false signs and wonders
4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,' and will deceive many.
11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.
24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. (Mt. 24:4-5, 11, 24)
9“They shall come with weeping, and with supplications I will lead them. I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they shall not stumble.” (Jer. 31:9)
VI. PROPHETIC MINISTRY: SIGNS IN THE HEAVEN
30“I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood and fire and pillars of smoke. 31The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.” (Joel 2:30-31)
10The heavens tremble; the sun and moon grow dark, and the stars diminish their brightness. (Joel 2:10)
15The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will diminish their brightness. (Joel 3:15)
A. In describing the outpouring of the Spirit in the end times, Joel gave three prophecies
10 The earth quakes before them, The heavens tremble;
The sun and moon grow dark, And the stars diminish their brightness.
30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord . (Joel 2:10, 30-31)
15 The sun and moon will grow dark, And the stars will diminish their brightness. (Joel 3:15)
B. The wonders in the earth will include manifestations of blood, fire, and pillars of smoke.
7 The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.
8 Then the second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. 9 And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.
10 Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter. (Rev. 8:7-10)
3 Then the second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it became blood as of a dead man; and every living creature in the sea died.
4 Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood. (Rev. 16:3-4)
C. Jesus said there would be great earthquakes and many fearful signs that would cause the nations to be perplexed and fearful as the powers of the sky are shaken.
25“There will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of things…for the powers of heaven will be shaken.” (Lk. 21:25-26)
11“There will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.” (Lk. 21:11)
VII. ISRAEL ASKS FOR PROPHETIC SIGNS
A. Joel gave three prophecies that God would give Israel signs in the sun, moon, and stars to confirm that the Messiah was among them
1The Pharisees…testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. (Mt. 16:1)
B. They reasoned that if Jesus was from God, He should prove it with signs.
22For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after [philosophical] wisdom… (1 Cor. 1:22)
VIII. END-TIME DELIVERANCE AND THE HARVEST
32It shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance… (Joel 2:32)
26So all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion…” (Rom. 11:26)
C. Second, we are saved, delivered (protected), from physical death in the context of end-time disasters.
3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the [ a ] fowler
And from the perilous pestilence.
4 He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
8 Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the Lord , who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10 No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; (Ps. 91:3-10)
D. Third, we are saved in the sense that God will provide the things necessary for life such as food and water. Israel experienced provision and protection in Goshen
22 And in that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, in order that you may know that I am the Lord in the midst of the land. 23 I will make a difference between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall be.” (Ex. 8:22-23)
4 And the Lord will make a difference between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt. So nothing shall die of all that belongs to the children of Israel.”
6 So the Lord did this thing on the next day, and all the livestock of Egypt died; but of the livestock of the children of Israel, not one died.
22 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt—on man, on beast, and on every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.”
26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, there was no hail. (Ex. 9:4, 6, 22, 26)
F. Fifth, we are saved, or protected, from deception and from falling away from our faith.
1The Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons…2having their conscience seared. (1 Tim. 4:1-2)
IX. THE DELIVERANCE OF THE REMNANT OF ISRAEL
32For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the remnant whom the LORD calls.
(Joel 2:32)
A. Many will die in Jerusalem during the Great Tribulation
8 And it shall come to pass in all the land,”
Says the Lord ,
“ That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die,
But one -third shall be left in it: (Zech. 13:8)
However, God will save a remnant physically, by sparing their life, and spiritually, as they are born again
25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:
“The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; 27 For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.” (Rom. 11:25-27)
X. COSMIC SIGNS IN THE END TIMES: EXTRA STUDIES
B. Haggai prophesied that God would shake heaven (sky),earth, sea, dry land, and all nations.
6“I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; 7and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of all nations, and I will fill this temple with glory,” says the LORD of hosts…22“I will shake heaven and earth. 22I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; I will destroy the strength of the Gentile kingdoms.” (Hag. 2:6-7, 21-22)
C. Jesus prophesied that there would be cosmic signs in the end times.
11“There will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.” (Lk. 21:11)
25“There will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of heaven will be shaken.” (Lk. 21:25-26)
29“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” (Mt. 24:29)
D. There are cosmic signs in the book of Revelation.
12The sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. 13And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs… (Rev. 6:12-13)
7The first angel sounded: hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up…8The second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea…10Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers…12Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day did not shine, and likewise the night. (Rev. 8:7-12)
E. There are cosmic signs in the book of Isaiah.
10For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not give their light; the sun will be darkened in its going forth, and the moon will not cause its light to shine. (Isa. 13:10)
F. Wonders in the heavens
30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke. (Joel 2:30)
The heavens tremble
10 The earth quakes before them,
The heavens tremble;
The sun and moon grow dark,
And the stars diminish their brightness. (Joel 2:10)
And shake
15 The sun and moon will grow dark,
And the stars will diminish their brightness. (Joel 3:15)
10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations
Will not give their light;
The sun will be darkened in its going forth,
And the moon will not cause its light to shine. (Isa. 13:10)
23 Then the moon will be disgraced
And the sun ashamed;
For the Lord of hosts will reign
On Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
And before His elders, gloriously. (Isa. 24:23)
Arise, shine;
For your light has come!
And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.
2 For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,
And deep darkness the people;
But the Lord will arise over you,
And His glory will be seen upon you. (Isa. 60:1-2)
7 When I put out your light,
I will cover the heavens, and make its stars dark;
I will cover the sun with a cloud,
And the moon shall not give her light.
8 All the [ b ] bright lights of the heavens I will make dark over you,
And bring darkness upon your land,”
Says the Lord God . (Ezek. 32:7-8)
1. Sun: Will turn to darkness
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord . (Joel 2:31)
It will grow dark.
15 The sun and moon will grow dark,
And the stars will diminish their brightness. (Joel 3:15)
It will be darkened
29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. (Mt. 24:29)
One-third of the sun, moon, and stars will be darkened
12 Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day did not shine, and likewise the night. (Rev. 8:12)
The sun will go down at noon as the earth is darkened
9 “And it shall come to pass in that day,” says the Lord God ,
“That I will make the sun go down at noon, And I will darken the earth in broad daylight; (Amos 8:9)
There will be deep darkness on the earth
2 For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you. (Isa. 60:2)
2. Moon: Will be turned into blood
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. (Joel 2:31)
Will grow dark
10 The earth quakes before them, The heavens tremble;
The sun and moon grow dark, And the stars diminish their brightness. (Joel 2:10)
15 The sun and moon will grow dark, And the stars will diminish their brightness. (Joel 3:15)
Will not give its light
29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. (Mt. 24:29)
3. Stars: Will diminish their brightness
10 The earth quakes before them, The heavens tremble;
The sun and moon grow dark, And the stars diminish their brightness. (Joel 2:10)
15 The sun and moon will grow dark, And the stars will diminish their brightness. (Joel 3:15)
Will not give light
10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not give their light; The sun will be darkened in its going forth, And the moon will not cause its light to shine. (Isa. 13:10)
Will fall to the earth
13 And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. (Rev. 6:13)
29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. (Mt. 24:29)
4. Sky: Will have strange weather patterns
11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. (Lk. 21:11)
Scorching heat
8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. (Rev. 16:8)
16 They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; (Rev. 7:16)
7 The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up. (Rev. 8:7)
19 Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of [ i ] His covenant was seen in His temple. And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, and great hail. (Rev. 11:19)
21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great. (Rev. 16:21)
Lightning and thunder
27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. (Mt. 24:27)
5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake. (Rev. 8:5)
18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. (Rev. 16:18)
The two witnesses will have power to shut heaven so there is no rain
6 These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire. (Rev. 11:6)
XI. WONDERS IN THE EARTH: BLOOD, FIRE, SMOKE, AND EARTHQUAKES
A. Blood:
30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke. (Joel 2:30)
Includes the blood of the martyrs
10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” (Rev. 6:10)
6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets,
And You have given them blood to drink.
For it is their just due.” (Rev. 16:6)
6 I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement. (Rev. 17:6)
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who were slain on the earth.” (Rev. 18:24)
2 For true and righteous are His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He has avenged on her the blood of His servants shed by her.” (Rev. 19:2)
7 The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the [ a ] earth.
(Rev. 8:7-9)
3Then the second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it became blood as of a dead man; and every living creature in the sea died. 4Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood. (Rev. 16:3-4)
The two witnesses will have power to turn the waters to blood
6 These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire. (Rev. 11:6)
Blood flows in the nations
20 And the winepress was trampled outside the city, and blood came out of the winepress, up to the horses' bridles, for one thousand six hundred furlongs. (Rev. 14:20)
13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. (Rev. 19:13)
3 “I have trodden the winepress alone,
And from the peoples no one was with Me.
For I have trodden them in My anger,
And trampled them in My fury;
Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments,
And I have stained all My robes. (Isa. 63:3)
B.Fire:
30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke. (Joel 2:30)
Will be thrown to earth from heaven
5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake. (Rev. 8:5)
As it burns one third of the trees
7 The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up. (Rev. 8:7)
A great star like burning fire will fall from heaven
10 Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. (Rev. 8:10)
Fire will kill multitudes
18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. (Rev. 9:18)
The two witnesses will have power to call fire on their enemies
5 And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. (Rev. 11:5)
The False Prophet will also call fire come from heaven
13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. (Rev. 13:13)
Power to scorch men with fire from the sun
8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. (Rev. 16:8)
16 They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; (Rev. 7:16)
Flaming fire
8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. (2 Thes. 2:8)
God's judgment fires will destroy cities as it destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Fire will descend from heaven by the command of the two witnesses.
5If anyone wants to harm them [two witnesses], fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. If anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. (Rev. 11:5)
13He [False Prophet] performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. (Rev. 13:13)
C. Pillars of smoke:
30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke. (Joel 2:30)
The sun and air will be darkened by the smoke of the bottomless pit as it is opened
2 And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. (Rev. 9:2)
Smoke will kill many people
18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. (Rev. 9:18)
Smoke will be seen by many as Babylon burns
9 “The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her will weep and lament for her, when they see the smoke of her burning,
18 and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘What is like this great city?' (Rev. 18:9, 18)
3 Again they said, “Alleluia! Her smoke rises up forever and ever!” (Rev. 19:3)
D. There are several categories of fire and smoke.
When the saints gather in prayer, God's fire will fall as it did in the early church
(Acts 2:1-4)
The Lord will release the smoke of His glory.
8The temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from His power, and no one was able to enter the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed. (Rev. 15:8)
5Then the LORD will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night. (Isa. 4:5)
E. Earthquakes:
11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. (Lk. 21:11)
7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. (Mt. 24:7)
8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mk. 13:8)
12 I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. (Rev. 6:12)
5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake. (Rev. 8:5)
13 In the same hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. In the earthquake seven thousand people were killed, and the rest were afraid and gave glory to the God of heaven.
19 Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple. And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, and great hail. (Rev. 11:13, 19)
18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. (Rev. 16:18)
6 You will be punished by the Lord of hosts
With thunder and earthquake and great noise,
With storm and tempest
And the flame of devouring fire. (Isa. 29:6)
A great earthquake will occur in Israel
19 For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: ‘Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel, (Ezek. 38:19)
5 Then you shall flee through My mountain valley, For the mountain valley shall reach to Azal.
Yes, you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake
In the days of Uzziah king of Judah.
Thus the Lord my God will come, a nd all the saints with You. (Zech. 14:5)
10 The earth quakes before them,
The heavens tremble;
The sun and moon grow dark,
And the stars diminish their brightness. (Joel 2:10)
16 The Lord also will roar from Zion,
And utter His voice from Jerusalem;
The heavens and earth will shake;
But the Lord will be a shelter for His people,
And the strength of the children of Israel. (Joel 3:16)
F. False signs/wonders:
13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. (Rev. 13:13-14)
14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. (Rev. 16:14)
23 The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, and the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore. For your merchants were the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived. (Rev. 18:23)
20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. (Rev. 19:20)
24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. (Mt. 24:24)
22 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. (Mk. 13:22)
8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, (2 Thes. 2:8-9)
G. True signs/wonders:
17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.
18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days;
And they shall prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in heaven above
And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord .
21 And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.' (Acts 2:17-21)
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; (Mk. 16:17)
12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. (Jn. 14:12)
3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”
4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth. 5 And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. 6 These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire. (Rev. 11:3-6)
H. End-time prophets:
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; (Eph. 4:11-13)
10 And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.
18 The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come,
And the time of the dead, that they should be judged,
And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints,
And those who fear Your name, small and great,
And should destroy those who destroy the earth.” (Rev. 11:10, 18)
6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets,
And You have given them blood to drink.
For it is their just due.” (Rev. 16:6)
20 “Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets, for God has avenged you on her!”
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who were slain on the earth.” (Rev. 18:20, 24)
