- Boys under four years child sponsorship programme
In 2002,
the reported mortality rate for children under five years old was
22.6 deaths per 1,000 live births. The major causes of death in children
1-4 years old were gastrointestinal infections and external causes.
Slightly over 13 % of children under age five in Suriname are underweight
and 2.1 % are severely underweight. Approximately 10 % of children
are stunted and 6.5 % are wasted. Only 13 % of children aged under
four months are exclusively breastfed.

The leading causes of deaths
within this age group is gastroenteritis, accidents and trauma,
malnutrition and pneumonia, accounting for 50% of deaths.
Most malnourished children are older than
3 months. Malnutrition is rising in school-age children.

remains of primary importance when we adhere to the principles
of democracy, equality, non-discrimination, peace and social
justice. |

go towards Education
helping to feed the children before they go to school and help
with school uniforms, shoes, books and pencils etc. |
| The next 1/3rd will be invested
into a Family Empowerment Program enabling
the family to purchase 10 chickens per month.` |
