About
80 % of all births take place in a hospital. Around 11.4 % of newborns
have birth weights under 2,500 grams. In 2001, infant mortality rate
was 15.9/1,000 live births (154 infant deaths). In 2002, the infant
mortality rate was 21.1/1,000 live births (215 infant deaths). The
perinatal mortality rate in 2002 was 31.7 per 1,000 live births.

Most infant deaths are due
to conditions originating in the perinatal period (49 %),
followed by congenital malformations, and gastrointestinal
and respiratory infections.

Urgent action is needed in combating diseases
like malaria. In Suriname, this disease has re-emerged as
a major cause of morbidity and mortality for the people who
live in the well-promoted, pristine rainforests that cover

The money will be
divided into 3 modules

The first 1/3rd of the fees will
go towards a baby music educational programme.
We call our prenatal program- 'Give
Them The Best Start'(GTBS) leading
into the 'Bouncing Baby class' -We believe that our programme
will greatly enhance baby's development. Music enhances their
brain function, calms and stimulates! Research studies show
that rhythmic activities as well as listening to music, enhances
babies brain function. |
The next 1/3rd will be invested
into a Family Empowerment Program enabling
the family to purchase 10 chickens per month.` |

The last 1/3rd will go towards
a feeding programme. This will lead up to
the After School Club once the baby has grown up and is attending
Pre Primary School. |
