Israel, Egypt, and Syria in Victory and Unity (Isa. 19)
I. ISRAEL, EGYPT, AND ASSYRIA: A BLESSING IN THE EARTH
A. Daniel prophesied of the turmoil and suffering that Egypt, Syria, Israel will endure at the hands of the Antichrist in the end times
40“At the time of the end the king of the South [Egypt] shall attack him [Antichrist]; and the king of the North [Syria] shall come against him [Antichrist] like a whirlwind, with chariots …with many ships; and he [Antichrist] shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. 41He shall enter the Glorious Land [Israel], and many countries shall be overthrown 42“He [Antichrist] shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. 43He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt…” 44 But news from the east (?China) and the north (?Syria, Turkey or Russia) shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. 45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas [Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea] the glorious holy mountain; [Israel], yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him. (Dan. 11:40-45)
The Lord will cause their pain and suffering to work together to fulfill His glorious purpose.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. (Rom. 8:28)
B. Isaiah tells the end of the story.
24In that day Israel will be one of three with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing in the midst of the land [earth], 25whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, “Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.” (Isa. 19:24-25)
C. After Jesus defeats the Antichrist, He will fully restore Israel, Egypt, and Assyria
Daniel's prophecy about the events coming to these nations is connected to Isaiah's prophecy.
16 In that day Egypt will be like women, and will be afraid and fear because of the waving of the hand of the Lord of hosts, which He waves over it. 17 And the land of Judah will be a terror to Egypt; everyone who makes mention of it will be afraid in himself, because of the counsel of the Lord of hosts which He has determined against it.
18 In that day five cities in the land of Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear by the Lord of hosts; one will be called the City of Destruction.
19 In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the Lord at its border. 20 And it will be for a sign and for a witness to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to the Lord because of the oppressors, and He will send them a Savior and a Mighty One, and He will deliver them. 21 Then the Lord will be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians will know the Lord in that day, and will make sacrifice and offering; yes, they will make a vow to the Lord and perform it. 22 And the Lord will strike Egypt, He will strike and heal it; they will return to the Lord , and He will be entreated by them and heal them.
23 In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian will come into Egypt and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians will serve with the Assyrians.
24 In that day Israel will be one of three with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing in the midst of the land, 25 whom the Lord of hosts shall bless, saying, “Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.” (Isa. 19:16-25)
II. THE CONTEXT OF ISAIAH 19 IS CONNECTED TO DANIEL 11
C. The Antichrist shall invade and occupy the Glorious Land of Israel
45“And he [Antichrist] shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas [Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea] and the glorious holy mountain [Jerusalem]; ye the shall come to his end, and no one will help him.” (Dan. 11:45)
D. Jesus will destroy him by the very brightness, or radiance, of His appearance.
11 “I watched then because of the sound of the pompous words which the horn was speaking; I watched till the beast was slain, and its body destroyed and given to the burning flame. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away, yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.
13 “I was watching in the night visions,
And behold, One like the Son of Man,
Coming with the clouds of heaven!
He came to the Ancient of Days,
And they brought Him near before Him.
14 Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,
That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
Which shall not pass away,
And His kingdom the one
Which shall not be destroyed.
22 until the Ancient of Days came, and a judgment was made in favor of the saints of the Most High, and the time came for the saints to possess the kingdom.
26 ‘But the court shall be seated,
And they shall take away his dominion,
To consume and destroy it forever.
27 Then the kingdom and dominion,
And the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven,
Shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High.
His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
And all dominions shall serve and obey Him.' (Dan. 7:11-14, 22, 26-27)
Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.” (Dan. 9:27)
8Then the lawless one [Antichrist] will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. (2 Thes. 2:8)
16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon. (Rev. 16:16)
20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. (Rev. 19:20)
III. INTERPRETING ISAIAH 19
B. The two most likely partial fulfillments of Isaiah 19 are that either Israel or the Philistines sought Egypt's help in conspiring against Assyria.
2 “I will set Egyptians against Egyptians;
Everyone will fight against his brother,
And everyone against his neighbor,
City against city, kingdom against kingdom.
3 The spirit of Egypt will fail in its midst;
I will destroy their counsel,
And they will consult the idols and the charmers,
The mediums and the sorcerers.
4 And the Egyptians I will give
Into the hand of a cruel master,
And a fierce king will rule over them,”
Says the Lord, the Lord of hosts.
5 The waters will fail from the sea,
And the river will be wasted and dried up.
6 The rivers will turn foul;
The brooks of defense will be emptied and dried up;
The reeds and rushes will wither.
7 The papyrus reeds by the River, by the mouth of the River,
And everything sown by the River,
Will wither, be driven away, and be no more.
8 The fishermen also will mourn;
All those will lament who cast hooks into the River,
And they will languish who spread nets on the waters.
9 Moreover those who work in fine flax
And those who weave fine fabric will be ashamed;
10 And its foundations will be broken.
All who make wages will be troubled of soul.
11 Surely the princes of Zoan are fools;
Pharaoh's wise counselors give foolish counsel.
How do you say to Pharaoh, “I am the son of the wise,
The son of ancient kings?”
12 Where are they?
Where are your wise men?
Let them tell you now,
And let them know what the Lord of hosts has purposed against Egypt.
13 The princes of Zoan have become fools;
The princes of Noph are deceived;
They have also deluded Egypt,
Those who are the mainstay of its tribes.
14 The Lord has mingled a perverse spirit in her midst;
And they have caused Egypt to err in all her work,
As a drunken man staggers in his vomit.
15 Neither will there be any work for Egypt,
Which the head or tail,
Palm branch or bulrush, may do. (Isa. 19:2-15)
V. DECREE #1 (INDIVIDUAL): RELEASE THE FEAR OF GOD AND POWER (ISA. 19:16-17)
A. We can identify five prophetic decrees in Isaiah 19—each beginning with “in that day”
16In that day Egypt will…be afraid and fear because of the waving of the hand of the LORD of hosts, which He waves over it. 17And the land of Judah will be a terror to Egypt; everyone who makes mention of it will be afraid in himself, because of the counsel of the LORD of hosts which He has determined against it. (Isa. 19:16-17)
18 In that day five cities in the land of Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear by the Lord of hosts; one will be called the City of
19 In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the Lord at its border.
19: 18; 19-22; 23; 24-25)
D. Jesus will wave, or stretch forth, His hand to release power, including signs in the sky and on earth
25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. (Lk. 21:25-26)
18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days;
And they shall prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in heaven above
And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. (Acts 2:18-19)
Jesus stretching forth His hand speaks of His power being manifest through His people, especially in the context of persecution.
29“Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus…” (Acts 4:29-30)
E. Jesus will wave His hand to destroy the tongue, or gulf, of Egypt ( Gulf of Suez or Aqabah ) at the Red Sea and cause the Euphrates River to dry up.
15The Lord will utterly destroy the tongue [gulf] of the Sea of Egypt; with His mighty wind He will shake His fist over the River, and strike it in the seven streams… (Isa. 11:15)
F. The two witnesses will release plagues similar to those released by Moses on Egypt.
5Fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies…6These have power to shut heaven…they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues…10These two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth. (Rev. 11:5-10)
G. The Antichrist's reign of terror is described as a scourge going through Judah
4 Therefore hear the word of the Lord , you scornful men,
Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,
15 Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death,
And with Sheol we are in agreement.
When the overflowing scourge passes through,
It will not come to us,
For we have made lies our refuge,
And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.”
16 Therefore thus says the Lord God :
“Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation,
A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
Whoever believes will not act hastily.
17 Also I will make justice the measuring line,
And righteousness the plummet;
The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies,
And the waters will overflow the hiding place.
18 Your covenant with death will be annulled,
And your agreement with Sheol will not stand;
When the overflowing scourge passes through,
Then you will be trampled down by it.
19 As often as it goes out it will take you;
For morning by morning it will pass over,
And by day and by night; It will be a terror just to understand the report.” (Isa. 28:14-19)
H. Jesus will show Himself to Egypt as the Lord of Hosts, the captain of the armies of heaven. Isaiah emphasized this name seven times in this chapter
4 And the Egyptians I will give Into the hand of a cruel master,
And a fierce king will rule over them,” Says the Lord, the Lord of hosts.
12 Where are they?
Where are your wise men?
Let them tell you now, And let them know what the Lord of hosts has purposed against Egypt.
20 And it will be for a sign and for a witness to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to the Lord because of the oppressors, and He will send them a Savior and a Mighty One, and He will deliver them.
24 In that day Israel will be one of three with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing in the midst of the land, 25 whom the Lord of hosts shall bless, saying, “Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.” (Isa. 19:4, 12, 16, 17, 18, 20, 24-25)
I. “Lord, wave Your hand of power to shake Egypt, so that they cry out for Your salvation. Release the spirit of the fear of the Lord. Stop ungodly leaders who resist You. Release Your hand over the house of prayer, and raise up apostolic and prophetic leadership.”
VI. DECREE #2 (REGIONAL): RELEASE A SPIRIT OF REVIVAL (ISA. 19:18)
A. The spirit of revival will rest in an unusual way on five cities in Egypt before Jesus returns.
18In that day five cities in the land of Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear by the LORD of hosts; one will be called the City of Destruction [lit. City of the Sun]. ( Isa. 19:18)
B. As part of end-time Jerusalem is spiritually referred to as Sodom
8And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city [ Jerusalem] which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. (Rev. 11:8)
VII. DECREE #3 (NATIONAL): PRAYER MINISTRY & NATIONAL SALVATION (ISA. 19:19-22)
A. The grace of prayer leading to a great revival and supernatural deliverance from the Antichrist will be released in Egypt before Jesus returns.
19In that day there will be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the LORD at its border. 20It will be for a sign and for a witness to the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to the LORD because of the oppressors, and He will send them a Savior and a Mighty One, and He will deliver them. 21Then the LORD will be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians will know the LORD in that day…yes, they will make a vow to the LORD and perform it. 22The LORD will strike Egypt, He will strike and heal it; they will return to the LORD, and He will be entreated by them and heal them. (Isa. 19:19-22)
B. Five stages:
(Stage #1) Egypt's national oppression
(Stage #2) A national prayer movement
(Stage #3) National deliverance
(Stage #4) National salvation
(Stage #4) National healing of the land and social infrastructures
D. The Antichrist will function as an end-time Pharaoh who will oppress God's people.
7“I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry… 8So I have come down to deliver them…9The cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.” (Ex. 3:7-9)
E. As Israel's national salvation will come after Jesus returns, so will Egypt's and other nations.
11Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him; all nations shall serve Him. (Ps. 72:11)
15The nations shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth… (Ps. 102:15)
F. God will strike the wicked infrastructures in Egypt, and will then heal them as the nation prays.
19Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom a desolate wilderness… (Joel 3:19)
G. The prayer movement will continue to entreat the Lord until God fully heals the land.
1“When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, 14if My people…will humble themselves, and pray… then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chr. 7:13-14)
H. Egypt will build an altar and a pillar as expressions of gratitude. These will be memorials to their national deliverance and salvation
(Isa.19:19-20)
I. Egypt will follow through on their vows
21 Then the Lord will be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians will know the Lord in that day, and will make sacrifice and offering; yes, they will make a vow to the Lord and perform it. (Isa.19:21)
J. “Lord, release grace on a national prayer movement to contend with prevailing faith for national deliverance, salvation, and healing.”
VIII. DECREE #4 (INTERNATIONAL): RELEASE RECONCILIATION (ISA. 19:23)
B. The modern peoples from the lands of Egypt and Assyria will reconcile in the Lord. Arabs will reconcile with Arabs, and then Arab nations will reconcile with Israel in Christ.
23In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian will come into Egypt and the Egyptian into Assyria. The Egyptians will serve with the Assyrians. (Isa. 19:23)
C. Isaiah often referred to this literal millennial highway
16…a highway for the remnant of His people who will be left from Assyria… (Isa. 11:16)
23In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian will come into Egypt and the Egyptian into Assyria. The Egyptians will serve with the Assyrians. (Isa. 19:23)
8 A highway shall be there, and a road,
And it shall be called the Highway of Holiness.
The unclean shall not pass over it,
But it shall be for others.
Whoever walks the road, although a fool,
Shall not go astray. (Isa. 35:8)
11 I will make each of My mountains a road,
And My highways shall be elevated. (Isa. 49:11)
10 Go through,
Go through the gates!
Prepare the way for the people;
Build up,
Build up the highway!
Take out the stones,
Lift up a banner for the peoples! (Isa. 62:10)
D. “Lord, fully unify Egyptian, Syrian and Iraqi believers now as a first fruits.
IX. DECREE #5 (GLOBAL): RELEASE SUPERNATURAL UNITY (ISA. 19:24-25)
A. Arabs will be fully reconciled with Israel, resulting in a blessing in the midst of the “land.”
24In that day Israel will be one of three with Egypt and Assyria-- a blessing in the midst of the land [earth] , 25 whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, “Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.” (Isa. 19:24-25)
B. Israel's two longest-standing enemies will be fully reconciled to Jesus, then to Israel.
15…so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace… (Eph. 2:15)
4The mystery of Christ…6that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs… (Eph. 3:4-6)
C. The sons of Isaac and Ishmael will one day be fully united in Jesus.
3In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. (Gen. 12:3)
D. God's glory will be poured out, resulting in the supernatural unity of Israel, Egypt, and Assyria
21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: (Jn. 17:21-22)
Unity comes as their national identity and destiny is understood by revelation
24 In that day Israel will be one of three with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing in the midst of the land, 25 whom the Lord of hosts shall bless, saying, “Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.” (Isa. 19:24-25)
G. It is possible that the geographic area of the garden of Eden is restored in the Millennium.
The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them,
And the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose; (Isa. 35:1)
3 For the Lord will comfort Zion,
He will comfort all her waste places;
He will make her wilderness like Eden,
And her desert like the garden of the Lord ;
Joy and gladness will be found in it,
Thanksgiving and the voice of melody. (Isa. 51:3)
29 I will raise up for them a garden of renown, and they shall no longer be consumed with hunger in the land, nor bear the shame of the Gentiles anymore. (Ezek. 34:29)
35 They will say, “This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden; the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited.” (Ezek. 36:35)
6 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this? ” Then he brought me and returned me to the bank of the river.
7 When I returned, there, along the bank of the river, were very many trees on one side and the other.
8 Then he said to me: “This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the valley, and enters the sea. When it reaches the sea, its waters are healed. 9 And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes. 10 It shall be that fishermen will stand by it from En Gedi to En Eglaim; they will be places for spreading their nets. Their fish will be of the same kinds as the fish of the Great Sea, exceedingly many. 11 But its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be given over to salt. 12 Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.” (Ezek. 47:6-12)
H. The blessing in the garden of Eden will spread to all the nations in the Millennium.
14For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD… (Hab. 2:14)
6Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit. (Isa. 27:6)
“Lord, unify Arab and Jewish believers as a first-fruits, and cause all to see Your calling on each of these nations and to serve You together with joy. ”
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, (Eph. 1:17-18)
