Session #3 - FALL FEASTS OF ISRAEL

SHADOWS OF THE CHRIST AND THE NEW COVENANT - PART #2

Review: In studying the ‘Types' the two comparative words ‘AS' and ‘SO' are often seen.

AS  it was in the days of Noah…  Matt 24:37a

SO  it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. –  Matt 24:37b

When the "Type" and the "Antitype"  (or fulfillment)  have both appeared, as the "Brazen Serpent" and the "Uplifted Christ," then the Type has been fulfilled.

If the Antitype has not yet appeared then the fulfillment is future. The  "Plagues of Egypt"  are a type of the Plagues of the  "Great Tribulation."

FALL FEASTS:

The Feast of Trumpets
• The Day of Atonement
• The Feast of Tabernacles

The Feast of Trumpets

This feast is known in Judaism as Rosh Hashanah

24  “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘In the seventh month, on the first  day  of the month, you shall have a sabbath- rest , a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.  (Lev 23:24)

The shofar was used for many purposes:

•  To assemble Israel before Yahweh

When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain.”
(Ex 19:13b)

•  To call the community together

“Make two silver trumpets for yourself; you shall make them of hammered work; you shall use them for calling the congregation.
(Num 10:2a)

•  To summon Moses to the top of the mountain to receive the Commandments

19  And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by voice.
(Exodus19:19)

•  To give a signal during time of war

27  And it happened, when he arrived, that he blew the trumpet in the mountains of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountains ( Judges 3:27a)

•  To commemorate the year of Jubilee

‘And you shall count seven sabbaths of years for yourself, seven times seven years; and the time of the seven sabbaths of years shall be to you forty-nine years.  Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth  day  of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall make the trumpet to sound throughout all your land.  10  And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout  all  the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you; and each of you shall return to his possession (Lev. 25:8-10a)

•  To anoint a new king during coronation service

34  There let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel; and blow the horn, and say,  ‘Long   live King Solomon! '
(1 Kings 1:34)

•  To re-gather the outcasts of Israel

13  So it shall be in that day:
The great trumpet will be blown;
They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria,
And they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt,
And shall worship the  Lord  in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
(Isa. 27:13)

8.To warn the people of danger

Blow the trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm in My holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; For the day of the  Lord  is coming, For it is at hand: (Joel 2:1)

9. During battle

18  When I blow the trumpet, I and all who  are  with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of the whole camp, and say, ‘ The sword of  the  Lord  and of Gideon!' ” (Judges 7:18)

10. To pull down walls and strongholds

And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark. But the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.  It shall come to pass, when they make a long  blast  with the ram's horn,  and  when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him.” (Joshua 6:4-5)

11. To herald end time judgements

And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets. (Revelations 8: 2)

12. To declare the arrival of the Messiah

14  Then the  Lord  will be seen over them, And His arrow will go forth like lightning.
The Lord  God  will blow the trumpet, And go with whirlwinds from the south.
15  The  Lord  of hosts will defend them; They shall devour and subdue with slingstones. (Zech. 9:14 – 15a)

The Feast of Trumpets is echoed and re-echoed throughout the New Testament in connection with the Lord's coming.

32  “But of that day and hour   no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the   Father.   (Mark 13:32)

I. OUR BLESSED HOPE: JESUS' RETURN TO THE EARTH

A. Jesus is coming back to the earth to establish His kingdom.

13  looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,  (Titus 2:13)

30  Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven,   and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.   31  And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His   elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. (Mt. 24:30-31)

15  Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become  the kingdoms  of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”  (Rev. 11:15)

B. Just as we saw Jesus ride into Jerusalem on a donkey as the 'Suffering Servant'.
So too when Messiah returns this next time He will come as the 'Conquering King'.

11  Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him  was  called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.  12  His eyes  were  like a flame of fire, and on His head  were  many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself.  13  He  was  clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.  14  And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.  15  Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.  (Rev. 19:11-15)

C. Jesus will march through Bozrah in Edom (Jordan) killing His enemies on His way to Jerusalem

1 Who  is  this who comes from Edom, With dyed garments from Bozrah, This  One who is  glorious in His apparel, Traveling in the greatness of His strength?—

“I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”

Why  is  Your apparel red, And Your garments like one who treads in the winepress?

“I have trodden the winepress alone, And from the peoples no one  was  with Me.
For I have trodden them in My anger, And trampled them in My fury;
Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, And I have stained all My robes.
For the day of vengeance  is  in My heart, And the year of My redeemed has come. (Isa. 63:1-4)

D. Jesus will come to defeat the Antichrist at Jerusalem and then to establish His throne there.

31  “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the   holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.   32  All the nations will be gathered before Him, and   He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides  his  sheep from the goats.
(Mt. 25:31-32)

II. JESUS RAPTURES THE SAINTS AT THE SOUND OF THE LAST TRUMPET

•  The rapture describes what happens to all the saints at the time of Jesus' second coming.

16  For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.  17  Then we who are alive  and  remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. (1 Thes. 4:16-17)

•  Jesus will rapture the Church when He brings all the saints with Him from heaven.

13  so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints. (1 Thes. 3:13)

•  Jesus will come with all the angels.

41  The Son of Man will send out His angels,   and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness. (Mt. 13:41)

26  Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.   27  And then He will send His angels, and gather together His   elect from the four winds, from the farthest part of earth to the farthest part of heaven. (Mark 13:26 – 27)

31  “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the   holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.   (Mt. 25:31)

but in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets. (Rev. 10:7)

51  Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—  52  in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. (1 Cor. 15:51-52)

15  Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become  the kingdoms  of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” (Rev. 11:15)

•  “In a moment” qualifies how fast each individual will be changed, not how much time it takes for the whole Church to see Him and be changed, thus completing the worldwide rapture.

51  Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—  52  in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.  (1 Cor. 15:51-52)

III. THE CENTERPIECE OF GOD'S ETERNAL PURPOSE TO JOIN HEAVEN AND EARTH

having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself,  10  that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him.  (Eph. 1:9-10)

B. (Jn. 20-21; Acts 1)

1V. THE SECOND COMING PROCESSION: 3 STAGES (30 DAYS)

A. Jesus' coming is a procession because He will come with all the saints

13  so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.   (1 Thes. 3:13)

And all the angels

31  “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the   holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. (Mt. 25:31)

As He travels on clouds across the whole earth for all to see

30  Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven,   and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
(Mt. 24:30)

He will come with the Father's glory

27  For   the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father   with His angels,   and then He will reward each according to his works.
(Mt. 16:27)

He will come with great power

26  Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. (Mk. 13:26)

As He travels across the sky with the brightness and energy of lightning

27  For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. (Mt. 24:27)

The day of the Lord was a time when the Lord poured out His wrath upon Israel.

The sun and moon will be darkened as the stars fall and the very heavens are shaken -

29  “Immediately after the tribulation of those days   the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. (Mt. 24:29)

Jesus' royal procession in the sky on clouds will be seen by all

Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. (Rev. 1:7a)

God's last trump and the resurrection of the righteous are recorded in the New Testament:

51  Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—  52  in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.    (1 Corinthians 15:51-52)

Jesus' royal procession in the sky on clouds will be seen by all

Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him.    (Rev. 1:7a)

B. The second coming procession involves a 3-stage process including many events occurring over a 30-day period

This 30-day period can be seen by comparing the 1,260-day (3½ year) time frame

But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot  for  forty-two months.  And I will give  power  to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.” (Rev. 11:2-3a)

Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days. (Rev.12:6)

25  He shall speak  pompous  words against the Most High, Shall persecute the saints of the Most High,
And shall intend to change times and law. Then  the saints  shall be given into his hand For a time and times and half a time. (Dan. 7:25)

27  Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate.” (Dan. 9:27)

1,260-day compared with the 1,290 days in Daniel

11  “And from the time  that  the daily  sacrifice  is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up,  there shall be  one thousand two hundred and ninety days. (Dan. 12:11)

1. Stage #1 FEAST OF TRUMPETS:

Jesus' procession across the sky to rapture the church

30  Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven,   and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.   31  And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His   elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. (Mt. 24:30-31)

2. Stage #2 DAY OF ATONEMENT:

Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.  He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is  the  Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; (Revelation 20:1-2)

And He will also be involved, as King of Kings, in banishing Satan at that time to establish the Kingdom of God on earth.

And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles   until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. (Luke 21:24b)

Jesus' procession on the land traveling through Jordan to Jerusalem

For the  Lord  has a sacrifice in Bozrah, And a great slaughter in the land of Edom. (Isa. 34:6b)

12  You marched through the land in indignation; You trampled the nations in anger.
13  You went forth for the salvation of Your people, For salvation with Your Anointed.
You struck the head from the house of the wicked, By laying bare from foundation to neck.  Selah (Hab. 3:12-13)

Gird Your sword upon  Your  thigh, O Mighty One, With Your glory and Your majesty.
And in Your majesty ride prosperously because of truth, humility,  and  righteousness;
And Your right hand shall teach You awesome things. (Ps. 45:3-5)

The Lord  is  at Your right hand;
He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath.
He shall judge among the nations,
He shall fill  the places  with dead bodies,
He shall execute the heads of many countries. (Ps. 110:5-6)

3. Stage #3 FEAST OF TABERNACLES:

Blessed and holy  is  he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
(Revelation 20:6)

C. Summary:
Jesus' procession begins in the sky at the 7th trumpet as He raptures the Church on the Feast of Trumpets and ends on the earth after the 7th bowl, with victory over the Antichrist.

Inflicting judgement over the Antichrist and the enemies on the Day of Atonement.

Then Jesus makes His triumphal entry into Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles.

16  And He has on  His  robe and on His thigh a name written:

KING OF KINGS AND
LORD OF LORDS.

The Beast and His Armies Defeated

17  Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, “Come and gather together for the supper of the great God,  18  that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all  people,   free and slave, both small and great.”

19  And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army.  20  Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.  21  And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh. (Rev. 19:11-21)

The Coming Deliverance of Judah

12  The burden of the word of the  Lord  against Israel. Thus says the  Lord , who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him:  “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem.  And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.  In that day,” says the  Lord , “I will strike every horse with confusion, and its rider with madness; I will open My eyes on the house of Judah, and will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.  And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem  are  my strength in the  Lord  of hosts, their God.'  In that day I will make the governors of Judah like a firepan in the woodpile, and like a fiery torch in the sheaves; they shall devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left, but Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place—Jerusalem.

“The  Lord  will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall not become greater than that of Judah.  In that day the  Lord  will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them in that day shall be like David, and the house of David  shall be  like God, like the Angel of the  Lord  before them.  It shall be in that day  that  I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

Mourning for the Pierced One

10  “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for  his  only  son,  and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.  11  In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of  Megiddo.  12  And the land shall mourn, every family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves;  13  the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by itself, and their wives by themselves;  14  all the families that remain, every family by itself, and their wives by themselves.

Idolatry Cut Off

13  “In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.

“It shall be in that day,” says the  Lord  of hosts, “ that  I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered. I will also cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land.  It shall come to pass  that  if anyone still prophesies, then his father and mother who begot him will say to him, ‘You shall not live, because you have spoken lies in the name of the  Lord .' And his father and mother who begot him shall thrust him through when he prophesies.

“And it shall be in that day  that  every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; they will not wear a robe of coarse hair to deceive.  But he will say, ‘I  am  no prophet, I  am  a farmer; for a man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.'  And  one  will say to him, ‘What are these wounds between your arms?' Then he will answer, ‘ Those  with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.'
(Zech. 12:1-13:6)

14  Behold, the day of the  Lord  is coming, And your spoil will be divided in your midst.
For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken, The houses rifled, And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity, But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

Then the  Lord  will go forth And fight against those nations, As He fights in the day of battle.
And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west,
Making  a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south.

Then you shall flee  through  My mountain valley, For the mountain valley shall reach to Azal.
Yes, you shall flee As you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah.

It shall come to pass in that day That  there will be no light; The lights will diminish.
It shall be one day Which is known to the  Lord —
Neither day nor night.
But at evening time it shall happen That  it will be light.

And in that day it shall be That  living waters shall flow from Jerusalem,
Half of them toward the eastern sea And half of them toward the western sea;
In both summer and winter it shall occur.
And the  Lord  shall be King over all the earth.
In that day it shall be— “The  Lord   is  one,”
And His name one. (Zech. 14:1-9)

•  Jesus' ministry was prophetically pictured by the Law of Moses (first 5 books of the OT), the Prophets and the Psalms, which teach us about His first and second comings -

27  And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

44  Then He said to them,  “These  are  the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and  the  Prophets and  the  Psalms concerning Me.”   (Lk. 24:27, 44)

10 days after the Feast of Trumpets is the Day of Atonement, when Christ will judge His Church and His enemies.

The Day of Atonement is the period when Christ reconciles us to God by removing the sins in our personality. It is the judgment of his spiritual enemies in mankind, beginning with his spiritual enemies in his Church.

15 days after the Feast of Trumpets is the Feast of Tabernacles, when we will celebrate the wedding feast

And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God  is  with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them  and be  their God. (Revelation 21:3)

16  ‘After   this I will return
And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down;
I will rebuild its ruins,
And I will set it up;
17  So that the rest of mankind may seek the   Lord ,
Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name,
Says the   Lord   who does all these things.' (Acts 15:16-17)

And all of this will help us to keep our eyes open to world events as the Word of God becomes more and more of a reality.

2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.   (Proverbs 25:2)
