The Battle for Jerusalem - Bible Verse Handbook
The Battle for Jerusalem: Litmus Test for the End-Time
Church
I. UNDERSTANDING THE BATTLE FOR JERUSALEM
A. The battle for Jerusalem is a spiritual, political,
and military battle for the control of Jerusalem.
11Behold, a white horse. He [Jesus] who sat on him…makes
war…16He has on His robe…a name written: KING OF KINGS
AND LORD OF LORDS…19I saw the beast [Antichrist], the kings
of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against
Him…20The beast [Antichrist] was captured and the
false prophet…these two were cast alive into the lake of fire
…21The rest were killed with the sword…20:1I saw an
angel…2 He laid hold of…Satan, and bound him for a thousand
years; 3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit… (Rev.
19:11-20:3)
B. The battle for Jerusalem will be the decisive battle
to end the Armageddon campaign.
2 I will gather all…nations to battle against Jerusalem…3
Then the Lord will go forth [second coming] and fight against those
nations, as He fights in the day of battle. (Zech. 14:2-3)
C. The battle for Jerusalem will be one issue used to perfect
the Church in her obedience to Jesus.
27...that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not
having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be
holy and without blemish [compromise]. (Eph. 5:27)
D. Scripture calls the Church to stand with God’s
purposes for Israel
1“Comfort, yes, comfort My people!”
Says your God.
2 “Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her,
That her warfare is ended, That her iniquity is pardoned;
For she has received from the LORD’s hand Double for all her
sins.” (Isa. 40:1-2)
11 Indeed the LORD has proclaimed To the end of the world:
“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Surely your salvation
is coming;
Behold, His reward is with Him, And His work before Him.’
” (Isa. 62:11)
7 For thus says the LORD:
“Sing with gladness for Jacob, And shout among the chief of
the nations;
Proclaim, give praise, and say,‘O LORD, save Your people,
The remnant of Israel!’
8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them
from the ends of the earth,
Among them the blind and the lame, The woman with child
And the one who labors with child, together; A great throng shall
return there.
9 They shall come with weeping, And with supplications I will lead
them.
I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters, In a straight
way in which they shall not stumble; For I am a Father to Israel,
And Ephraim is My firstborn.
10 “Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, And declare it in
the isles afar off, and say,
‘He who scattered Israel will gather him, And keep him as
a shepherd does his flock.’ (Jer. 31:7-10)
14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!
For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. (Joel
3:14)
3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a
very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will
surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered
against it. (Zech. 12:3)
For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken, The houses rifled, And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity, But the remnant of the
people shall not be cut off from the city. (Zech. 14:2)
31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the [c]holy
angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32
All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate
them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the
goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats
on the left.
34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come,
you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from
the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me
food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and
you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and
you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord,
when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You
drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked
and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and
come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them,
‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of
the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’
41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart
from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the
devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food;
I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and
you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and
in prison and you did not visit Me.’
44 “Then they also will answer [d]Him, saying, ‘Lord,
when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or
sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ 45 Then He
will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch
as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do
it to Me.’ 46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment,
but the righteous into eternal life.” (Mt. 25:31-46)
11 I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly
not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation
has come to the Gentiles.
20 Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you
stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. 21 For if God did not
spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either.
22 Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those
who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in
His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. (Rom.
11:11, 20-22)
13 Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth,
he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male Child. 14 But
the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly
into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time
and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. 15
So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after
the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood.
16 But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth
and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his
mouth. 17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went
to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments
of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. (Rev. 12:13-17)
II. JESUS WILL RULE FROM JERUSALEM: AFTER THE JEWISH LEADERS
RECEIVE HIM
A. Jesus will not forcibly take the kingship over Israel,
but will wait until it is given to Him by those in positions of
authority over the land.
37“O Jerusalem…how often I wanted to gather your children…but
you were not willing! 38See! Your house is left to you desolate;
39for I say to you, you [leaders of Israel] shall see Me
no more till you say, “Blessed is He who comes in the name
of the LORD!”
(Mt. 23:37-39)
B. Israel’s leaders are the official representatives
of that national covenant with God.
19“Repent…and be converted, that your [Israel’s]
sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from
the presence of the Lord, 20and that He may send Jesus…21whom
heaven must receive [retain] until the times of restoration
of all things.” (Acts 3:19-21)
C. Satan will not be cast into prison
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to
the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. (Rev.
20:1)
Until the battle for Jerusalem is won
21 And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from
the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled
with their flesh. (Rev. 19:21)
F. After Satan is cast into prison, Jesus will restore
the conditions of Eden across the whole earth. He will reverse what
occurred in Eden
1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field
which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has
God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit
of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which
is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not
eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely
die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will
be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it
was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise,
she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with
her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and
they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together
and made themselves coverings.
8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden
in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from
the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. (Gen.
3:1-8)
Jesus’ victory will not be fully manifest on earth
until His second coming
15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public
spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. (Col. 2:15)
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood,
He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might
destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, (Heb.
2:14)
III. THE CENTERPIECE OF GOD’S ETERNAL PURPOSE
A. 9 …made known to us the mystery [hidden plan]
of His will…10that He might gather together in one all things
in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth…
(Eph. 1:9-10)
20… by Him to reconcile all things to Himself…whether
things on earth or things in heaven… (Col. 1:20)
B. Jesus will rule all nations in the millennial kingdom.
21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion,
and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that
which is to come.
22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head
over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness
of Him who fills all in all. (Eph. 1:21-23)
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
(Mt. 28:19)
9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name
which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee
should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those
under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil. 2:9-11)
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all
creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven
and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through
Him and for Him.
17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning,
the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the
preeminence.
Reconciled in Christ
19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should
dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him,
whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through
the blood of His cross.
21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by
wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh
through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach
in His sight— 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded
and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel
which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven,
of which I, Paul, became a minister. (Col. 1:15-23)
24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the
Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.
25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet.
26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27 For “He
has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all
things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all
things under Him is excepted. 28 Now when all things are made subject
to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put
all things under Him, that God may be all in all. (1 Cor.
15:24-28)
31“When the Son of Man comes in His glory…then He will
sit on the throne of His glory. 32All the nations will be gathered
before Him.” (Mt. 25:31-32)
17At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the LORD,
and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the
LORD, to Jerusalem. (Jer. 3:17)
3 The throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it [New Jerusalem].
(Rev. 22:3)
C. At Jesus’ coming, the New Jerusalem will descend
and connect with the millennial Jerusalem.
10…showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending
out of heaven… (Rev. 21:10)
IV. SATAN’S RAGE AGAINST JERUSALEM AND ISRAEL
A. Satan wants to exterminate the Jewish people so that
a believing remnant cannot invite Jesus to rule Israel as her Messiah.
12“Woe to the inhabitants of the earth…for the devil
has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that
he has a short time.” 13When the dragon [Satan] saw
that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted the woman
[remnant of Israel]…14But the woman was given two wings
of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her
place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time,
from the presence of the serpent. 15The serpent spewed water…like
a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away
by the flood [persecution]...
17The dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war
with the rest of her offspring [the Church], who…have
the testimony of Jesus. (Rev. 12:13-17)
8 And it shall come to pass in all the land,” Says the LORD,
“That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die, But one-third
shall be left in it: 9 I will bring the one-third through the fire,
Will refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is
tested. They will call on My name, And I will answer them. I will
say, ‘This is My people’; And each one will say, ‘The
LORD is my God.’ ” (Zech. 13:8-9)
B. The Great Tribulation will be the most severe time in
history for Israel, the Church, and for unbelievers
1 At that time...there shall be a time of trouble, such as never
was...7 He [angel]... swore...that it shall be for a time,
times, and half a time [3½ years]; when the power
of the holy people [Israel] has been completely shattered…
(Dan. 12:1, 7)
21“Then there will be great tribulation, such as has not
been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever
shall be.” (Mt. 24:21)
7 For that day is great, so that none is like it; and it is the
time of Jacob’s trouble. (Jer. 30:7)
9 And I will do among you what I have never done, and the like
of which I will never do again, because of all your abominations.
(Ezek. 5:9)
2 A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness,
Like the morning clouds spread over the mountains. A people come,
great and strong, The like of whom has never been; Nor will there
ever be any such after them, Even for many successive generations.
(Joel 2:2)
C. Satan’s attack on Jewish people will result in
2/3 being killed and the remaining 1/3 receiving salvation.
8“It shall come to pass in all the land…that two-thirds
in it shall be cut off and die, but one third shall be left in it:
9 I will bring the one-third through the fire, will refine them
as silver is refined, and test them as gold is tested. They will
call on My name…” (Zech. 13:8-9)
D. Half of Jerusalem will be taken into captivity
2 “For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
the city shall be taken…half of the city shall go into captivity,
but the remnant of the people shall not be cut off.” (Zech.
14:2)
E. Isaiah emphasized that Jesus’ ministry to Israel
will include delivering their captives from prison
11It shall come to pass in that day That the Lord shall set His
hand again the second time
To recover the remnant of His people who are left, From Assyria
and Egypt, From Pathros and Cush, From Elam and Shinar, From Hamath
and the islands of the sea.
12 He will set up a banner for the nations, And will assemble the
outcasts of Israel,
And gather together the dispersed of Judah From the four corners
of the earth.
13 Also the envy of Ephraim shall depart, And the adversaries of
Judah shall be cut off;
Ephraim shall not envy Judah, And Judah shall not harass Ephraim.
14 But they shall fly down upon the shoulder of the Philistines
toward the west; Together they shall plunder the people of the East;
They shall lay their hand on Edom and Moab;
And the people of Ammon shall obey them. 15 The LORD will utterly
destroy the tongue of the Sea of Egypt; With His mighty wind He
will shake His fist over the River, And strike it in the seven streams,
and make men cross over dry-shod. 16 There will be a highway for
the remnant of His people. Who will be left from Assyria, As it
was for Israel In the day that he came up from the land of Egypt.
(Isa. 11:11-16)
12 And it shall come to pass in that day That the LORD will thresh,
From the channel of the River to the Brook of Egypt; And you will
be gathered one by one, O you children of Israel.
13 So it shall be in that day: The great trumpet will be blown;They
will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria, And they
who are outcasts in the land of Egypt, And shall worship the LORD
in the holy mount at Jerusalem. (Isa. 27:12-13)
6 “I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness, And will
hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the
people, As a light to the Gentiles,
7 To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those
who sit in darkness from the prison house.
22 But this is a people robbed and plundered; All of them are snared
in holes,
And they are hidden in prison houses; They are for prey, and no
one delivers;
For plunder, and no one says, “Restore!” 23 Who among
you will give ear to this?
Who will listen and hear for the time to come? 24 Who gave Jacob
for plunder, and Israel to the robbers? Was it not the LORD, He
against whom we have sinned? For they would not walk in His ways,
Nor were they obedient to His law. (Isa. 42:6-7, 22-24)
5 “And now the LORD says, Who formed Me from the womb to
be His Servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him, So that Israel is gathered to Him (For
I shall be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, And My God shall be
My strength),
6 Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should
be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the
preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the
Gentiles,
That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’
”
7 Thus says the LORD, The Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One, To
Him whom man despises,
To Him whom the nation abhors, To the Servant of rulers:
“Kings shall see and arise, Princes also shall worship, Because
of the LORD who is faithful,
The Holy One of Israel; And He has chosen You.”
8 Thus says the LORD: “In an acceptable time I have heard
You, And in the day of salvation I have helped You; I will preserve
You and give You As a covenant to the people,
To restore the earth, To cause them to inherit the desolate heritages;
9 That You may say to the prisoners, ‘Go forth,’ To
those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’
“They shall feed along the roads, And their pastures shall
be on all desolate heights.
10 They shall neither hunger nor thirst, Neither heat nor sun shall
strike them; For He who has mercy on them will lead them, Even by
the springs of water He will guide them.
11 I will make each of My mountains a road, And My highways shall
be elevated.
12 Surely these shall come from afar; Look! Those from the north
and the west,
And these from the land of Sinim.”
13 Sing, O heavens! Be joyful, O earth! And break out in singing,
O mountains! For the LORD has comforted His people, And will have
mercy on His afflicted.
God Will Remember Zion
14 But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me, And my Lord has
forgotten me.”
15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion
on the son of her womb?
Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you.
16 See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls
are continually before Me.
17 Your sons shall make haste; Your destroyers and those who laid
you waste
Shall go away from you.
18 Lift up your eyes, look around and see; All these gather together
and come to you.
As I live,” says the LORD, “You shall surely clothe
yourselves with them all as an ornament,
And bind them on you as a bride does.
19 “For your waste and desolate places, And the land of your
destruction, Will even now be too small for the inhabitants; And
those who swallowed you up will be far away.
20 The children you will have, After you have lost the others,
Will say again in your ears, ‘The place is too small for me;
Give me a place where I may dwell.’
21 Then you will say in your heart, ‘Who has begotten these
for me, Since I have lost my children and am desolate, A captive,
and wandering to and fro?
And who has brought these up?
There I was, left alone; But these, where were they?’ ”
22 Thus says the Lord GOD:
“Behold, I will lift My hand in an oath to the nations, And
set up My standard for the peoples; They shall bring your sons in
their arms, And your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders;
23 Kings shall be your foster fathers, And their queens your nursing
mothers;
They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth, And lick
up the dust of your feet.
Then you will know that I am the LORD, For they shall not be ashamed
who wait for Me.”
24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, Or the captives [n]of
the righteous be delivered?
25 But thus says the LORD:
“Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, And
the prey of the terrible be delivered;
For I will contend with him who contends with you, And I will save
your children.” (Isa. 49:5-25)
1“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD
has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison
to those who are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance
of our God; To comfort all who mourn, (Isa. 61:1-2)
Scripture describes an aspect of Israel’s persecution
just before Jesus returns as their being in prison
3 For behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD, ‘that
I will bring back from captivity My people Israel and Judah,’
says the LORD. ‘And I will cause them to return to the land
that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.’
”
4 Now these are the words that the LORD spoke concerning Israel
and Judah.
5 “For thus says the LORD:
‘We have heard a voice of trembling, Of fear, and not of peace.
6 Ask now, and see, Whether a man is ever in labor with child?
So why do I see every man with his hands on his loins Like a woman
in labor,
And all faces turned pale?
7 Alas! For that day is great, So that none is like it; And it is
the time of Jacob’s trouble, But he shall be saved out of
it.
8 ‘For it shall come to pass in that day,’ Says the
LORD of hosts, ‘That I will break his yoke from your neck,
And will burst your bonds; Foreigners shall no more enslave them.
9 But they shall serve the LORD their God, And David their king,
Whom I will raise up for them.
10 ‘Therefore do not fear, O My servant Jacob,’ says
the LORD, ‘Nor be dismayed, O Israel; For behold, I will save
you from afar, And your seed from the land of their captivity. Jacob
shall return, have rest and be quiet, And no one shall make him
afraid.
11 For I am with you,’ says the LORD, ‘to save you;
Though I make a full end of all nations where I have scattered you,
Yet I will not make a complete end of you. But I will correct you
in justice,
And will not let you go altogether unpunished.’
12 “For thus says the LORD:
‘Your affliction is incurable, Your wound is severe.
13 There is no one to plead your cause, That you may be bound up;
You have no healing medicines.
14 All your lovers have forgotten you; They do not seek you; For
I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy, With the chastisement
of a cruel one, For the multitude of your iniquities,
Because your sins have increased.
15 Why do you cry about your affliction?
Your sorrow is incurable. Because of the multitude of your iniquities,
Because your sins have increased, I have done these things to you.
16 ‘Therefore all those who devour you shall be devoured;
And all your adversaries, every one of them, shall go into captivity;
Those who plunder you shall become plunder, And all who prey upon
you I will make a prey.
17 For I will restore health to you And heal you of your wounds,’
says the LORD, ‘Because they called you an outcast saying:
“This is Zion; No one seeks her.” ’
18 “Thus says the LORD:
‘Behold, I will bring back the captivity of Jacob’s
tents,
And have mercy on his dwelling places;
The city shall be built upon its own mound,
And the palace shall remain according to its own plan.
19 Then out of them shall proceed thanksgiving
And the voice of those who make merry;
I will multiply them, and they shall not diminish;
I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.
20 Their children also shall be as before,
And their congregation shall be established before Me;
And I will punish all who oppress them.
21 Their nobles shall be from among them,
And their governor shall come from their midst;
Then I will cause him to draw near,
And he shall approach Me;
For who is this who pledged his heart to approach Me?’ says
the LORD.
22 ‘You shall be My people,
And I will be your God.’ ”
23 Behold, the whirlwind of the LORD
Goes forth with fury, A continuing whirlwind;
It will fall violently on the head of the wicked.
24 The fierce anger of the LORD will not return until He has done
it,
And until He has performed the intents of His heart.
In the latter days you will consider it. (Jer. 30:3-24)
1“At the same time,” says the LORD, “I will be
the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be My people.”
2 Thus says the LORD:
“The people who survived the sword
Found grace in the wilderness—
Israel, when I went to give him rest.”
3 The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying:
“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love;
Therefore with loving kindness I have drawn you.
4 Again I will build you, and you shall be rebuilt,
O virgin of Israel!
You shall again be adorned with your tambourines,
And shall go forth in the dances of those who rejoice.
5 You shall yet plant vines on the mountains of Samaria;
The planters shall plant and eat them as ordinary food.
6 For there shall be a day
When the watchmen will cry on Mount Ephraim,
‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion,
To the LORD our God.’ ”
7 For thus says the LORD:
“Sing with gladness for Jacob,
And shout among the chief of the nations;
Proclaim, give praise, and say,
‘O LORD, save Your people,
The remnant of Israel!’
8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country,
And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among them the blind and the lame,
The woman with child
And the one who labors with child, together;
A great throng shall return there.
9 They shall come with weeping,
And with supplications I will lead them.
I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters,
In a straight way in which they shall not stumble;
For I am a Father to Israel,
And Ephraim is My firstborn.
10 “Hear the word of the LORD, O nations,
And declare it in the isles afar off, and say,
‘He who scattered Israel will gather him,
And keep him as a shepherd does his flock.’
11 For the LORD has redeemed Jacob,
And ransomed him from the hand of one stronger than he.
12 Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion,
Streaming to the goodness of the LORD—
For wheat and new wine and oil,
For the young of the flock and the herd;
Their souls shall be like a well-watered garden,
And they shall sorrow no more at all.
13 “Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance,
And the young men and the old, together;
For I will turn their mourning to joy,
Will comfort them,
And make them rejoice rather than sorrow.
14 I will satiate the soul of the priests with abundance,
And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.”
15 Thus says the LORD:
“A voice was heard in Ramah,
Lamentation and bitter weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children,
Refusing to be comforted for her children,
Because they are no more.”
16 Thus says the LORD:
“Refrain your voice from weeping,
And your eyes from tears;
For your work shall be rewarded, says the LORD,
And they shall come back from the land of the enemy.
17 There is hope in your future, says the LORD,
That your children shall come back to their own border.
18 “I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself:
‘You have chastised me, and I was chastised,
Like an untrained bull;
Restore me, and I will return,
For You are the LORD my God.
19 Surely, after my turning, I repented;
And after I was instructed, I struck myself on the thigh;
I was ashamed, yes, even humiliated,
Because I bore the reproach of my youth.’
20 Is Ephraim My dear son?
Is he a pleasant child?
For though I spoke against him,
I earnestly remember him still;
Therefore My heart yearns for him;
I will surely have mercy on him, says the LORD.
21 “Set up signposts,
Make landmarks;
Set your heart toward the highway,
The way in which you went.
[f]Turn back, O virgin of Israel,
Turn back to these your cities.
22 How long will you gad about,
O you backsliding daughter?
For the LORD has created a new thing in the earth—
A woman shall encompass a man.”
23 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: “They shall
again use this speech in the land of Judah and in its cities, when
I bring back their captivity: ‘The LORD bless you, O home
of justice, and mountain of holiness!’ (Jer. 31:1-23)
33 “As I live,” says the Lord GOD, “surely with
a mighty hand, with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out,
I will rule over you. 34 I will bring you out from the peoples and
gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a
mighty hand, with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out.
35 And I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and
there I will plead My case with you face to face. 36 Just as I pleaded
My case with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt,
so I will plead My case with you,” says the Lord GOD.
37 “I will make you pass under the rod, and I will bring you
into the bond of the covenant; 38 I will purge the rebels from among
you, and those who transgress against Me; I will bring them out
of the country where they dwell, but they shall not enter the land
of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
39 “As for you, O house of Israel,” thus says the Lord
GOD: “Go, serve every one of you his idols—and hereafter—if
you will not obey Me; but profane My holy name no more with your
gifts and your idols. 40 For on My holy mountain, on the mountain
height of Israel,” says the Lord GOD, “there all the
house of Israel, all of them in the land, shall serve Me; there
I will accept them, and there I will require your offerings and
the firstfruits of your sacrifices, together with all your holy
things.
41 I will accept you as a sweet aroma when I bring you out from
the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you have been
scattered; and I will be hallowed in you before the Gentiles. 42
Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I bring you into the
land of Israel, into the country for which I raised My hand in an
oath to give to your fathers. 43 And there you shall remember your
ways and all your doings with which you were defiled; and you shall
loathe yourselves in your own sight because of all the evils that
you have committed. 44 Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when
I have dealt with you for My name’s sake, not according to
your wicked ways nor according to your corrupt doings, O house of
Israel,” says the Lord GOD.’ ” (Ezek.20:33–44)
25 “Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Now I will bring
back the captives of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of
Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name— 26 after they
have borne their shame, and all their unfaithfulness in which they
were unfaithful to Me, when they dwelt safely in their own land
and no one made them afraid. 27 When I have brought them back from
the peoples and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands,
and I am hallowed in them in the sight of many nations, 28 then
they shall know that I am the LORD their God, who sent them into
captivity among the nations, but also brought them back to their
land, and left none of them captive any longer. 29 And I will not
hide My face from them anymore; for I shall have poured out My Spirit
on the house of Israel,’ says the Lord GOD.” (Ezek.
39:25-29)
10 “They shall walk after the LORD.
He will roar like a lion.
When He roars,
Then His sons shall come trembling from the west;
11 They shall come trembling like a bird from Egypt,
Like a dove from the land of Assyria.
And I will let them dwell in their houses,”
Says the LORD. (Hos. 11:10-11)
8 “Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom,
And I will destroy it from the face of the earth;
Yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”
Says the LORD.
9 “For surely I will command,
And will sift the house of Israel among all nations,
As grain is sifted in a sieve;
Yet not the smallest grain shall fall to the ground.
10 All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword,
Who say, ‘The calamity shall not overtake nor confront us.’
Israel Will Be Restored
11 “On that day I will raise up
The tabernacle of David, which has fallen down,
And repair its damages;
I will raise up its ruins,
And rebuild it as in the days of old;
12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom,
And all the Gentiles who are called by My name,”
Says the LORD who does this thing.
13 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD,
“When the plowman shall overtake the reaper,
And the treader of grapes him who sows seed;
The mountains shall drip with sweet wine,
And all the hills shall flow with it.
14 I will bring back the captives of My people Israel;
They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them;
They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them;
They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them.
15 I will plant them in their land,
And no longer shall they be pulled up
From the land I have given them,”
Says the LORD your God. (Amos 9:8-15)
1“For behold, in those days and at that time,
When I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem,
2 I will also gather all nations,
And bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
And I will enter into judgment with them there
On account of My people, My heritage Israel,
Whom they have scattered among the nations;
They have also divided up My land. (Joel 3:1-2)
19 Behold, at that time
I will deal with all who afflict you;
I will save the lame,
And gather those who were driven out;
I will appoint them for praise and fame
In every land where they were put to shame.
20 At that time I will bring you back,
Even at the time I gather you;
For I will give you fame and praise
Among all the peoples of the earth,
When I return your captives before your eyes,”
Says the LORD. (Zeph. 3:19-20)
10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
And the horse from Jerusalem;
The battle bow shall be cut off.
He shall speak peace to the nations;
His dominion shall be ‘from sea to sea,
And from the River to the ends of the earth.’
God Will Save His People
11 “As for you also, Because of the blood of your covenant,
I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
12 Return to the stronghold, You prisoners of hope.
Even today I declare That I will restore double to you.
13 For I have bent Judah, My bow, Fitted the bow with Ephraim,
And raised up your sons, O Zion, Against your sons, O Greece,
And made you like the sword of a mighty man.”
14 Then the LORD will be seen over them,
And His arrow will go forth like lightning.
The Lord GOD will blow the trumpet,
And go with whirlwinds from the south. (Zech. 9:10-14)
7 To bring out prisoners from the prison, those who sit in darkness
from the prison house …22But this [Israel] is a people
robbed and plundered; all of them are snared in holes, and they
are hidden in prison houses; they are for prey, and no one delivers.
(Isa. 42:7, 22)
V. THE ROLE OF GENTILES IN THE BATTLE FOR JERUSALEM
A. God will force all to decide to stand for or against
Israel
3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a
very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will
surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered
against it. (Zech. 12:3)
He calls the Church to stand with Israel
1“Comfort, yes, comfort My people!”
Says your God.
2 “Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her,
That her warfare is ended,
That her iniquity is pardoned;
For she has received from the LORD’s hand
Double for all her sins.” (Isa. 40:1-2)
11 Indeed the LORD has proclaimed
To the end of the world:
“Say to the daughter of Zion,
‘Surely your salvation is coming;
Behold, His reward is with Him,
And His work before Him.’ ” (Isa. 62:11)
7 For thus says the LORD:
“Sing with gladness for Jacob,
And shout among the chief of the nations;
Proclaim, give praise, and say,
‘O LORD, save Your people,
The remnant of Israel!’
8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country,
And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among them the blind and the lame,
The woman with child
And the one who labors with child, together;
A great throng shall return there.
9 They shall come with weeping,
And with supplications I will lead them.
I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters,
In a straight way in which they shall not stumble;
For I am a Father to Israel,
And Ephraim is My firstborn.
10 “Hear the word of the LORD, O nations,
And declare it in the isles afar off, and say,
‘He who scattered Israel will gather him,
And keep him as a shepherd does his flock.’ (Jer.
31:7-10)
14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!
For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. (Joel
3:14)
3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a
very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will
surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered
against it. (Zech. 12:3)
1Behold, the day of the LORD is coming,
And your spoil will be divided in your midst.
2 For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
(Zech. 14:1-2)
31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy
angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32
All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate
them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the
goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats
on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand,
‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared
for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and
you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger
and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick
and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’
41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart
from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the
devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food;
I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and
you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and
in prison and you did not visit Me.’
44 “Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when
did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick
or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ 45 Then He will
answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as
you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it
to Me.’ 46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment,
but the righteous into eternal life.” (Mt. 25:31-46)
11 I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly
not! But through their [b]fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation
has come to the Gentiles.
20 Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you
stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. 21 For if God did not
spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either. 22 Therefore
consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity;
but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise
you also will be cut off.
(Rev. 12:13-17)
Their coming persecution
21 “I was watching; and the same horn was making war against
the saints, and prevailing against them,
25 He shall speak pompous words against the Most High,
Shall persecute[j] the saints of the Most High,
And shall intend to change times and law.
Then the saints shall be given into his hand
For a time and times and half a time. (Dan. 7:21, 25)
24 His power shall be mighty, but not by his own power;
He shall destroy fearfully, And shall prosper and thrive;
He shall destroy the mighty, and also the holy people. (Dan.
8:24)
33 And those of the people who understand shall instruct many;
yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity
and plundering. 34 Now when they fall, they shall be aided with
a little help; but many shall join with them by intrigue.
35 And some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them,
purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end; because
it is still for the appointed time. (Dan. 11:33-35)
7 Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters
of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to
heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for
a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people
has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished.
(Dan. 12:7)
Corrie ten Boom is an example of standing with Israel in
persecution.
The Church will be brought to maturity as she responds
to Jesus’ leadership in this
31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy
angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.
41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart
from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the
devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food;
Many will be purified, but others will fall away from the
faith
1Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart
from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of
demons, (1 Tim. 4:1)
3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come
unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed,
the son of perdition, ( 2 Thes. 2:3)
(Rom.
11:20-22)
3 “In that day…I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone
for all peoples…” (Zech. 12:3)
B. Gentile believers will provoke Israel to godly jealousy
to know Jesus
11…to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the
Gentiles. (Rom. 11:11)
C. Prayer is the context in which we receive supernatural
insight, love, boldness, and power to act.
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who
love you.” (Ps. 122:6)
E. The Lord calls the Church to make bold prophetic proclamations
to comfort Jerusalem.
11The LORD has proclaimed [mandated] to the end of the world [Gentiles
in the nations]: “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Surely
your salvation is coming; behold, His reward is with Him…’”
(Isa. 62:11)
1 “Comfort, yes, comfort My people!” says your God.
2 “Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her, that her
warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned...” (Isa.
40:1-2)
F. The Church must take a stand to boldly pray, declare,
and sing the message of God’s purposes for Israel so that
all the nations hear it clearly
7 Thus says the Lord: “Sing with gladness for Jacob, and
shout among the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and
say, ‘O Lord save Your people, the remnant of Israel!’…10Hear
the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the isles afar
off, and say, ‘He who scattered Israel will gather him, and
keep him as a shepherd does his flock.’” (Jer.
31:7-10)
