JAIL CHAIN: Give children many small strips of colored paper to write feelings that they had during a time of disaster or difficulty then tape the loops of paper together to form a chain. See if the children can get a long enough JAIL CHAIN to wrap around all the children as they stand close together. This demonstrates how negative emotions can bind us and enslave us.

c. Teach the Lesson (15 minutes)
Introduction:

Remember last week we taught you that when Joseph arrived in Egypt, a lot of things happened to him -- some good -- and some bad. You are going to help me tell the next part of this story. I will tell you some of the things that happened to Joseph and you will tell me if they were good or bad.
(Use GOOD and BAD signs from last week)

Teaching:

13 When she (Potiphar’s wife) saw that he (Joseph) had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants. “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.” (Bad)

16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him this story: “That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.” (Bad)

19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger. (Bad) 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. (Bad)

The Bible tells us that lust so gripped Potiphar’s wife that she threw caution to the wind, she chatted him up encouraging him to come to bed with her. Given her brazen forwardness, one might well imagine that as the days went by, she grew more daring in her seductions.

Finally, when none of these tactics had worked, she arranged for the house to be vacated except for herself and the man she had designs on. The unsuspecting Joseph walked right into her trap. She rushed at him wearing what we can only guess and grabbed him, presumably to drag him to her bed if she could. The outcome resulted in Joseph ending up in prison.

But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him; (Good) he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. (Good) 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. (Good) 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did. (Good)

CLOSING PRAYER
Heavenly Father, there are so many lessons to be learned from the story of Joseph. It shows us how you love and care for us even when times are difficult. It shows us that we should be loving and forgiving even when we have been treated badly. Help us to apply those lessons to our daily life. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

By the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
• Understand how Joseph felt having ended up in prison Genesis 39: 11-23
• Understand that grieving takes time.
• Accept their sadness and anger if they have loss someone who was important to them
• Accept that some people may take a longer time to recover from a loss
• Want to keep trusting God even when things become difficult
