UNITED
CARIBBEAN -
United Caribbean is the umbrella name that has been given to an all embracing
effort to ensure knowledge and visibility for disaster relief efforts
throughout the Caribbean region. www.unitedcaribbean.com offers cyber
space to NGO’s and Private Sector initiatives enabling the sharing
of information in the most current environment possible.
United Caribbean facilitates the genuine compassionate efforts of citizens
of all nations to efficiently assist relevant agencies with humanitarian
relief efforts, and provides also an opportunity to inform a revised Disaster
Management Policy for the Caribbean region. This policy will significantly
benefit small island developing states in sustainable recovery practices.

In the wake of Hurricane Ivan, a collaborative effort of NGO’s
and private sector organizations has collected, transported and
distributed over half ton of bottled water, first aid and medical
supplies, clothing, non-perishable foodstuffs, baby survival kits
and children’s items in a sincere attempt to assist the Government
relief forces, who are carrying out a sterling effort under severe
conditions on the island of Grenada. |
In an effort to relieve the pressure on an already stressed environment
and to identify a base close by and accessible to the coastal cities
and villages of northern Grenada affected by the storm, the island
of Carriacou was selected as a short term base of operations. |
|
|
Carriacou will house the short-term pilot operation which will
support the Primary Relief team ‘on the ground’ in Grenada.
Its proximity is such that supplies can be ferried into Gouyave
and the surrounding areas at reasonable cost, and communications
and utilities have been re-established; we are a telephone call
and one hours by boat away from Grenada in the event of an emergency. |
Having met with community leaders from Carriacou & Petite Martinique,
with our guidance, they were able to conduct damage assessments
and determine physical needs of vulnerable residents in an efficient
and timely manner, enabling distribution of relief supplies direct
to individuals within 48 hours. To date we have achieved some significant
successes.
These include:
|
|
|
Meeting with community leadership to ascertain immediate needs.
A Courtesy call was paid on the Permanent Secretary of the ministry
of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs which resulted in that
Ministry's staunch support of our initiative.

The Primary Relief Team has worked tirelessly to integrate gently into
the Carriacou community which was also extensively damaged by Hurricane
Ivan. To date, we have received significant support from all with whom
we have been in contact, and have toured the island to view and photo
document property damages. We have spoken and interviewed many of the
island’s residents and have been warmly welcomed by the Ministry
of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and the Opposition leader.
The Carriacou Disaster Preparedness Committee, whose correspondence prompted
our Carriacou decision, has been extremely cooperative and we are grateful
for all the kind assistance received regionally. The team’s efforts
are now being supported and augmented by NGO teams from Trinidad and St.
Vincent, joining Primary Team 1 on the ground in Grenada to assist with
community rebuilding efforts.
