Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports,
Anthony Wood, is not fully satisfied that the majority of youth
in Barbados are taking advantage of the opportunities being provided
by the Division of Youth Affairs.
He made this point during a courtesy call today from members of
the Emerging Global Leaders of Barbados, Christaneisha Soleyn and
Je-Meila Maloney, at the Ministry of Education.
Referring to initiatives such as the Project Oasis
programme and the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme, and efforts by
Youth Commissioners and Development Officers to encourage youth
to participate, the Minister said young people must seek the opportunities
provided by the Division, instead of waiting to be approached.
Ms. Soleyn and Ms. Maloney said they were inspired
to form the organisation after attending an Emerging Global Leaders’
Programme at York University in Canada, where they learned about
leadership and the role that young people could play in their society.
They also said the group would like to play a part
in the implementation of students’ councils in all secondary
schools. “I believe that students’ councils can mend
the broken relationship between teachers and students,“ Ms.
Maloney opined.
The Minister agreed and said discussions had already
taken place with ministry officials regarding student councils as
well as raising the awareness at the primary level.
Minister Wood also said he was pleased that Emerging
Global Leaders of Barbados would be generating awareness among young
people about the importance of “giving back to society”.
