PART 1

More and more
I realise
I just want
to be a potter.

I want to feel
the smooth clay grow
between my fingertips.
I want to create
with my hands…
make objects
of great beauty
that we use
in our everyday lives.

PART 2

What I no longer
want to be.

I don’t want
to be the cosmopolitan sexpot
posing in lace lingerie.
I don’t want
to be the Miss Efficient Secretary
or high-powered executive
with a leather briefcase.
I don’t want
to be the housebound mother
living in a housecoat,
slaving over a sink of pots and pans,
or even
the very competent mother
running a taxi service
between school, ballet
and the Cub Scouts.

PART 3

In so many ways
we are given
“pictures” of WHO
we should be.
Magazine photos,
television role models,
newspaper articles.
We all search
to identify
with Someone
and become
Something.

Sometimes,
we just end up
making our lives
a tangled, complicated mess.

And somehow,
with time,
we search to find
our true selves,
and to positively incorporate
our past lives
into a new one.
